For MD-PhDs that also want to do research, are they allowed to cut down on some of their residency shifts and do research?

2 years are switched into research, but only if you complete it.
A traditional path is: 3 (IM) + 3 (Cardio, Endo, ID, etc.) = 6 years.
It is changed to 2 (IM) + 2 (Fellowship)+ 2 research = 6 years

So their medical residency is shortened to enable them to do research residency (I don't know if that's an actual term). Thanks fellas!
