when is a good time to do a sub-i so that they will remember you come interview time? I have some free time in may and i was wondering if that would be too early to do a rotation ...

I think that might be too early. Most places reveiw apps and set up interviews around Nov-Dec. So a Sub-I in Aug-Oct would probably make more sense
