Program-Specific Info / Q's Dominican University Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi guys! I got into Dominican as well! I got my phone call on April 1st (totally thought it was an april fools joke 😛) and I got my official letter in the mail yesterday. I look forward to meeting you all at the orientation on August 15!

Also, I will be looking for housing as well! If anybody wants to room/rent together, let me know! I will be coming up from Southern California, so I definitely need to find housing that is as cheap as possible haha.

@alowe1275 you should be able to just log back into your application, and you will be taken to the page that has the graduate enrollment form as part of the checklist of things that you have to turn in.

I'm so excited! I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet but I accepted last night.

I think there is more information coming my way, but does it say when school starts??

I saw people saying that! Does school officially begin the following Monday? Just trying to plan my last day of work 🙂

Still not seeing it. All I see is " If you need to contact us regarding your application, provide your name...", followed by my reference number. Not sure whatsup, but I called admissions earlier and they said I didn't need to do it lol so I guess I'm good.

Where in Southern California? I'm originally from Orange County, but moved up here 3 years ago.🙂
I need to look for housing, too!

I look forward to meeting everyone!

@alowe1275 As long as its sorted out its all good haha.

@ayl27 I'm from Orange County as well 😀. I live right by Disneyland, actually haha. I am looking for housing right now - I think the best best would be to try and get a house to rent, it seems. It's the most economical, from what I can gather. I tried looking at one bedroom apartments/studios, but most are about 1300-1800 a month, and thats not including utilities 🙁. If a group of us can find a 3 bedroom/3 bathroom house to rent (or something along those lines) I think staying in San Rafael can become very affordable!

Hey everyone. I just got a call today and I'm off the waitlist. :claps:see you all this fall! Anyone from SFV in socal?

I just got an invitation to interview on Feb 17th. Anyone else out there applying to Dominican for the Fall 2017 cohort?

Hi!
How were you notified of your interview? I was wondering about when the program would start sending out invitations. I know that since Alison Shultz left the program I haven't really been able to contact anyone about timelines...
but glad to hear that they are starting to send out invites---Congrats! 🙂

I got an email a couple of hours ago, with a choice of a few time slots for each of the two days. Good luck to you!

To those that were invited. Can you post your stats?

Thanks! And good luck to you all.

I have a degree in Language studies from UC Santa Cruz
95 hours in a hand clinic
95 hours in post-acute rehab
3.75 in prereqs
3.9 gpa last 60 units
164/154/4.5 GRE

Has anyone gone through the Dominican interview from last year?

Didn't get to reply to this. I noticed you started the other thread asking about Dominican responses. Did you hear back yet, and when did you interview? What are your stats? Good luck!

I received an acceptance email today and interviewed sat morning. My gpa/gre aren't great but I think experience and hours made up for them. thought I did terribly on my interview. Hope my stats for the time i applied give you an idea.

UCSD, urban planning
cumulative GPA: around 3.4, higher for last 60 units (not sure about exact)
prereq GPA: 4.0
GRE: 149V/152Q/4.0AW (retook since with 150/" and 5.5aw)
last 2 years hours: 100 school-based OT, 70 inpatient/outpatient skilled-nursing facility
work: 2 years special education instructional assistant (1,500+ hrs on human serv. form), 4 years senior caregiver
older hours: 30 outpatient rehab clinic in hospital, 46 pediatric clinic, 130 school-based

Great experiences! It looks like you are way ready for OT school. Congratulations in getting accepted!
I interviewed Saturday morning as well. This is my second year applying to Dominican, but getting the chance to interview this year.

I have very similar stats like you! I did volunteer to many OT settings to get an input on every situation of the field.

I was accepted this evening.

cumulative gpa = 3.6
prereq gpa = 3.7
GRE: 160 verbal, 150 quantitative, 5 analytical writing
190 hours: school setting, pediatric clinic, hand therapy
student-athlete, work 2 jobs, officer of several clubs on campus - I think my well-rounded background helped my gpa and prereq gpa a lot in terms of compensation

thanks! don't lose hope yet! interview means improvement. are you from the area? seems your experience is well-rounded as well. i tried to get in many settings under an OT. it was a bit difficult but at least got a few done.

I moved to San Rafael two years ago from LA! So I know the area a little bit now. I did improve a lot from my first application! Received an email today saying I was on the wait-list. Good enough for me, as long as I am not rejected. It means I am qualified but there are not enough spots.

I am only assuming that you live in/around SD area because you said you went to UCSD? Planning to move? Marin county is great!

Shoot, I haven't heard anything from them yet, guess I didn't make the cut. Sounds like SMU will be the one for me after all!

I only got a glimpse of San Rafael the morning of the interview. From a quick search, it seems like a nice area. Glad to hear you're enjoying it up there. I'm from LA and go down to SD almost every weekend. Lived in SD for UCSD but I'm pretty much in SD half of the time. Good to hear you got on the waitlist. Hopefully you'll get in. Is Dominican your top choice since you live nearby? I'm hoping to stay in LA/SD. CSUDH, my top, gave me a no. now waiting to hear from others.

The weather won't be as nice as LA/SD though. However, the pace of life is a lot slower and mellow! A good change. My top choice is Dominican because I invested a lot living up here (work, network, volunteer) that I don't want to leave.

Ohh! Sorry about CSUDH.. being that it is a state school the applicant pool is even more competitive. Good luck on the other schools you are waiting on! Hope you get accepted to ones that are closed to you.

Do you have any recommendations for living situations?? I am a little concerned with the pricey-ness of the area, but I also don't want to live more than 15 minutes away. I'd prefer not to commute in traffic/have much of a commute at all

thanks, hope you eventually get in there or nearby schools since you're so close and put a lot of effort there. it was expected for csudh since i wasn't ready plus super competitive.

Hi! I'm a current 2nd year in the program, and I'm renting a house in San Rafael with some other girls in my cohort. This is the cheapest option that we found for living in San Rafael, so I suggest talking to your cohort and seeing if anyone wants to find a house together! Places like Novato are cheaper, but then again you have to deal with the traffic

If you don't mind me asking, what was your schedule like the first/second year? Unfortunately, moving is not an option for me so I will have a 1.5 hour commute to/from campus. I'm trying to get an idea of how early I would need to leave and when I would get back since I also have 3 kids to take care of.

I have a random question about financial aid through FAFSA - do those loans only go towards tuition? Or can you perhaps use those loans towards housing costs? I know that Dominican does not offer any other financial aids/scholarships, and they encourage students to look elsewhere, but does anyone have any insight on how they're going to put themselves through school?

I was accepted to Dominican and my #1 school yesterday, so I will not be accepting DU's offer. Best of luck to all of you!
