So what did people think of the HHMI Cloister interviews/visit? 👍 👎
😀 😕 :scared:

did anyone get to try out the infamous coffee machine?

-qpwoei

interviews went well.. i think. i wasn't grilled too hard on my research which was good bc it would have been really easy to stump me. however, i did list a "competitive/lifestyle specialty" on my app so they got on that. in both interviews! haha. geez, you're almost better off just leaving that part blank. =p.

i tell you what didn't go well, my picture, i came out weird.

according to min, they haven't taken a student form my school in about 10 years. that's either a really good sign or really bad one... =(? =)?

didn't try the coffee. what's the story behind it?

anyone know what time stuff comes out tomorrow?

it's not a midnight notification right?

How did you see your picture? was this right after the photographer took it? like seeing it on his camera/computer?

I'm rooting for you!

in the HHMI complex there's supposed to be an awesome coffee/espresso/cappuccino machine, I didn't get to try it.

yea, just saw it on his camera. my glasses don't have anti-reflection coating so i had to take it w/o them. i look lost and squinty =).

oh, i thought u said it was infamous?... i was thinking people got sick before their interviews or something haha =p

good luck to u too.

med fellows just sent the email...got it...awesome!

kuhlguy, did you get it at the same time?

congrats!

like around 12:00 EST

Just letting everyone know alternative letters also went out this AM.

Anyone have any idea what the odds are of getting of the alternate list?

Congrats to everyone who got what they wanted! And to those on the waitlists, I am sure that there will be movement. And there is potentially next year during which you will have reapplicant status. These admissions are quite flaky anyways.

Was wondering if anyone had an opinion on Sarnoff vs. HHMI Cloisters. I am absolutely torn between both programs. The Hughes offers incredible amenities and convenience and the chance to be at the NIH! The Sarnoff presents an incredible networking tool for residency, and the assigned mentors seem deeply invested in making sure our year is worthwhile as well as furthering us on our career path. But these are just MY impressions.

Perhaps people who interviewed or people who have actually had to choose between the two could present their motivations/opinions?

i would pick sarnoff. so u can move the wait list at hhmi =)). jk

seriously dude congrats on both. you really can't go wrong with either one.

does anyone know how long cloister alt list is?

w regards to how many people get off the list...i remember hearing 10ish historically? a fellow at the interview said if 6 of his closer friends were off the alt list so he was sure that there were probably more he didn't know about.

yay, see you this summer, qpwoei! so pumped for next year.

i did try the coffee from the famous coffee machine. excellent coffee, gigantic silver box of a coffee maker. 🙂 i have never seen one with that many buttons, lol!

congrats pseudorosette!!!!

Congrats to everyone hearing about the programs!!! I'll be at CRTP 🙂.👍

Yeah what a bout the DDCRF - do people ever get off the WL for that fellowship?

HHMI - rejected 🙁 🙁
Cloister - waitlisted 🙁
DDCRF - Has anyone gotten rejection letters for any of these? Do all the programs start sending out offers today? From what I understand, the accepted applicants have until April 2 to make a decision. Is this right?

Good luck everyone!!

Sorry about HHMI. I'm biased toward the NIH programs, so I hope Cloister pulls you off that wait-list.

I think the consensus is that if you didn't receive a rejection from a DD program, you're on their wait-list. They initially give applicants 2 weeks to decide.

Good luck!

PM me if you have questions about the program or to help find mentors.

Yes. Commonly.

It's also fairly common for a program (especially Iowa) to extend you an offer even if you didn't apply to them in the first place.
Saw your post in Rad Onc. Good job and congrats! 👍

Thanks for the info! Im keeping my fingers crossed 🙂

Got waitlisted for Cloisters. Does anyone know how this works? Is there a "rank" or is this one of those systems where they'll substitute someone off the waitlist depending on the characteristics of the person who turns down an offer?

Feeling pretty hopeless about my chances, unfortunately.

it's rank. historically 5-10 get off the list. no idea how long the list is tho (Min is not allowed to say).

my theory is, and im using simple numbers here, 80 finalists -> 40 A, 20ish WL, 20ish R.

keep ur head up man. at least we got some awesome food during the stay. =p

Accepted into the CRTP program!!! See you in Bethesda folks 😀

Same with HHMI. I think it's fair to say that has to be one of the hardest rejections considering the project planning that has to be done in advance as well as the support and commitment required from your faculty mentor. Being disappointed is an understatement. I want to say the process inspired rather than discouraged me from science but it's tough.

So no word from DDCF...is that a "waitlist" or rejection?

I think it just means you were not on their list of first offers...people will be turning down spots as some will have multiple acceptances. This opens up the the list to those who do not have offers yet. Maybe sending a email to a few of the places you are interested in, so they will give you consideration if spots open up.

Does anyone know the dates for the meeting in Chevy Chase in May ... trying to figure out my board's studying schedule

for those of you who either attend DD schools or for current/alum fellows who have insider info-- is not getting *any* email from a site equivalent to a rejection?

i've received waitlist emails from a few schools, but several others have sent neither rejections or acceptances. would much rather know if i'm going to be rejected now...

Anybody know if there has been any movement off the CRTP or HHMI waitlists?

For the MS2s, when are you planning on taking your boards? The fellowship has reduced my dedicated study time from 5 to 4 weeks. Not a huge difference I suppose, but enough to spook me a bit.

One alternative would be taking it sometime during the fellowship. Another is pushing back a third year rotation and studying for 5-6 weeks after the fellowship.

I'm leaning towards taking it as scheduled. Having step1 hanging over your head for another year would be excruciating!

I would certainly recommend taking it before you start the 1 yr fellowship. You do not want this hanging over your head, 4 weeks of diligent study is doable for step 1 prep, step up your studying now, until dedicated study time to compensate for the 1-week loss.
