Just curious, for all of the DO's applying to EM this year, how many interviews have you received so far?

So far, I have received 4 interviews:

Lincoln
North Shore
Jacobi
University of Maryland

Haven't received an invite in about 2 weeks, getting a little stressed! Do most programs screen MD students before DO's?

Good luck everyone!

I think some programs may knock DO's off a little bit and some don't. Going through this process though it seems like the only common feature is that each program does exactly what they need to in order to make my ulcer bigger and then strings me along just enough to reinforce my OCD about checking my email.
So far:
St. Luke's-Bethlehem
ECU
UMD
SUNY-Syracuse
Illinois-Peoria
Utah
USF
I did take both the USMLE(247) and COMLEX(98th%), maybe we could include who took what and how you did to kind of compare where and how many interviews.

I'm DO with not great COMLEX scores (60th on step I; 83rd on step II)
I had good letters from good people.
Interviews so far:
St.Vincent's Toledo
Maimonides
Morristown
UofI Peoria
York
PennState Hershey
UMKC-Truman

Hello all,

I am a DO student applying for MD residencies as well. I received 2 invites so far outside of the courtesy interviews I received from doing my EM rotations--the two are Resurrection and St. Vincents. I also applied to some transitional year programs, b/c I applied to a couple 234 programs, and am interviewing at Arrowhead (CA) transitonal year as well. I also did not apply to any of the programs that you are mentioning so far, like York and all of those, so it makes me feel better. I have excellent letters from well-respected EM residencies and my board scores were decent-COMLEX I 87th percentile, USMLE 211. I also passed step II-comlex 84th, usmle 217.

Good luck to everyone.

I received these interview offers while in my internship year:

Lansing, MI (Sparrow/Ingham)- home institution
MSU-Grand Rapids, MI (Spectrum Health)
MSU-Kalamazoo, MI (This weekend)
Regions-St. Paul, MN
Illinois-Peoria

Hey there,
I am glad someone started this thread so that we all can get a sense of acceptance in the EM realm. Well, I applied to a lot of places: no commitments to anyone yet. So far, here's the list:

Wash U
UMKC
Morristown (UMDNJ)
York (PA)
St. Luke's (PA)
Univ of Arkansas
Resurrection
UNMC (Nebraska)
Texas Tech
SUNY Buffalo
SUNY Syracuse
St. Vincent's (Ohio)
Maimonides (Brooklyn)

I also want some feedback from this myth. I heard that DO applicants applying to allopathic EM programs are considered "special applicants" not fourth year seniors according to the NRMP. Consequently, these special applicants can sign a residency commitment contract during interviews; hence bypassing the match. Is this true? Does it happen? Is that legal?
😱

Thanks and best of luck to you all.
:luck:

AFAIK this is true, it does happen, but not usually at the places where you would want to sign a contract.

Also IIRC, programs have to tell the NRMP how many of their spots will be available for the match ahead of time, so it's not like a program could offer all their spots before the match (unless they planned to from square 1).

I just received my first rejection today- EVMS in Norfolk. I did not anticipate getting a whole lot of rejections so this is a good dose of humble pie and boy is it yummy.
I should have anticipated something like this though, I am rotating at VCU in Richmond and the EVMS program director stopped by and gave a lecture. He stayed afterward to answer questions about the residency program and when asked if he took COMLEX scores he said "What's that?". Should have been a large hint.

Remember, most if not all of the EM residencies in OH are very DO friendly. Apply to all of them...we usually have at least 2 per class.

When I was a 4th year my list looked like:

Wright State
Indiana
Maricopa
Louisville
Akron
UI Peoria
SUNY Buff
Rochester
Toledo
Med College of Wis

My list as a 4th year included:

Hi all!!

I am a soon to be DO, COMLEX I 595 (87%) and COMLEX II 639 (93%), no USMLE. I applied to 34 programs and have heard from 5 thus far:

Resurrection, Akron, Univ Arkansas, KC-Missouri, and UF-JAX

Hope it will heat up soon. Good luck all!!!!

derek, just wondering how great your scores must be to have only applied to 10-thanks

Average scores, good letters, and lots of experience.

I am currently a PGY-3 in FP at Mayo Scottsdale, so I tried to limit my number of applications for second time through this anxiety fest.

Just received an interview from Indiana today!

Some of the interviews I want the most aren't coming in. Any chance that programs are reluctant to offer a spot to someone because they don't think they will actually move? I am from Oklahoma and I love the state, but I would like to move and see the country. Anyways, I am probably just paranoid and am letting stuff get to me. Good luck to all!

For whatever reason, if a PD thinks you won't rank them (location, if you come from a "better" school, whatever), they might not extend an offer. If you want to go somewhere, affirmatively notify them (by phone or email) that you would indeed go there, and give your reason.

Agreed. We've gotten applications with the basic theme of "I want to be in the forefront of EM research, both basic science and clinical." Well, honestly, our program probably isn't the best place if you are a research guru... you might best be served at other programs. The applicant had like stellar numbers and LORs and all, but we didn't extend an invitation.

Q

University of Mississippi today by e-mail 😳

Received this week:

UAB
University of California Fresno

More Rejections:

HCMC
UNM

Previous Rejections:

Vandy
UNC
BIDMC
UCSD

I had heard that Hennepin was notorious for being DO unfriendly. I didn't expect an interview, but thought maybe since I had honored an EM rotation at another local EM location (Regions) and was a MN native that I might be considered. Has any DO out there had an interview from Hennepin? To my knowledge no DO has ever been in their residency.

hey all-

recent invites: Cook County, Kern County
waitlist OHSU
rejections: Hennepin, Charity-New Orleans, Stanford, Loma Linda (not that I expected an invite anyway!)
still waiting on many!

Since we're all comparing sizes, thought I[d put my contribution into the mix. I'll be graduating from NSUCOM in Ft. Lauderdale Fl with a good GPA (top 15 percent), good COMLEX scores (85th percentile), and some experience in the field (lead paramedic/FF for 4 yrs). I've recieved my fair share of rejections as well... It would seem that EM is getting progressively more competitive (DOH!) The rejection letters talk about loads of applications coming through their offices. UNC mentioned that they've screened over 700 applicants. In any case, I applied to 25 or so programs and have been invited to:

Palmetto Richland
UMass Worcester
Albert Einstein/Jefferson in Philly

Rejected from:

BIDMC Boston
UNC
Wake Forest
Duke

The age old advice seems more appropriate every day.. rotate at as many places as possible, apply to loads of programs, and do well on your boards/GPA.. Best wishes to all.

When I applied, 2000, I applied to about 19 programs and got about 12 interviews. Only went to 8 interviews and ranked 6 of the 8. Got to my second choice. Univ of IL, Peoria.

I'm also a MN native, did the advanced EM rotation at Regions and applied to HCMC. Got rejected from HCMC. Was told by a friend of mine who interviewed there two years ago that his interviewer stated they had never taken a D.O. The interviewer did say that they ranked a D.O. once, but he didn't match there.

By the way, I've only got two interviews, the courtesy interview at Regions and one at Yale. Any advice on how to follow up with the programs I haven't heard from yet?

Just an update--
I applied to 33 programs, COMLEX I 87%, COMLEX II 93%, Top 25% of my class, one publication, several research projects, only 1 SLOR and one out EM rotation, EM Tech in a former life, etc....

Interviews from 11 or 12 thus far, rejections from 5 (Texas A&M, Duke, UNC, Ohio State, and Maricopa).

Dude! You were my idol way back in the distance SDN days! I was so enamored with you and the fact that you were at a DO program... Thanks for being a role model! Good to see you scour SDN every once in a while!!!!!

Q

Yep I remember Dr. Borhani when I was a 4th year I rotated at Peoria and highly considered going there for residency, I chose Wright State just one above.
I also remember being on SDN when it was simply www.osteopathic.com

The reality for DOs is that many allopathic programs (particularly those affiliated with large "academic" universities) will make active decisions to either not offer interviews to DO candidates or, according to a colleague, will not rank those DO candidates they interviewed.

If programs actively decide not to rank DO applicants, why would they interview us? Seems like a waste of time for both sides.

Agreed. That is why the programs with which I am familiar (including my own) have decided to no longer interview DO candidates.

First of all I want to thank EMResident for blessing us with his/her time and posts. You are too kind.

Second, do tell us what large academic center you are at so in the future all us DO's can avoid it. I know it is not University of Maryland who has a DO on staff, and it is not Maricopa. Wait, I know it is the Mayo Clinic, no they have lots of DO's there. Oh, I give up.

I am trying to make the point that if you are good DO, MD, or MBBS doors will open for you that were once closed to others.

Q

RBorhani is to QuinnNSU as QuinnNSU is to JMC.

I am originally form Tampa, FL, but have been a Cali resident for 10 years now (stationed in San Diego and Pendleton and decided to stay). I would like to do EM in CA for sure with FL being my backup. From the the look of everyone's posts...it seems this is highly unlikely.

What gives? How many CA EM sites are there to take a shot at? If all else fails, Quinn, you got my back at Tampa General, no?

I also agree with Quinn! I read lots of RBorhani posts years ago, before I was accepted at MSUCOM. Thanks Rez! I'm also excited to check out Peoria too. I have an interview there in December. I've heard a lot of residents speak very highly of the program.

Any words of advice for a lowely MS2 lookin to get into the ER field? Do you suggest going for a DO or MD residency?

BTW, Boomer Frickin Sooner!

no need for the attitude derek. his isn't the only program that isn't DO-friendly... a lot of it has to do w/ location it would seem to me. the southeast has so few DO schools - although now there is the one in VA - that there is a plethora of MD candidates and an unfamiliarity w/ DO's.

Thinking of DO students that will be applying in future years, who want to check out where other DOs are getting interviews, I propose that all DOs ,or DOs to be, applying this year should update their lists again.
