DO's doing allopathic match 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can someone confirm if USC (University of Southern Cali) is restricting the number of DO's they take? Seems like a few years ago they took a bunch of DOs, but someone told me recently they've limited the number of DOs they take...

stats Comlex I 645 Comlex II... 548 USMLE I 227 USMLE II 242
Top 20% of class

Submitted early October with Comlex I and USMLE I scores initially. Sent USMLE II scores afterwards. Haven't sent Comlex II...

Interviews:
Indiana, Loyola, Rush, UIC, MCW, UW Madison, Cleveland Clinic, Case Metro, Louisville, UT Houston, U of Iowa, Lutheran General

Cancelled:
Northshore, Hopkins (Sinai), UT San Antonio, Yale (Bridgeport)

Never heard back from/rejected:
U of Chicago, Northwestern, U Michigan, Baylor

My stats: Top 20% of my class, good COMLEX scores, no USMLE, good LORs and personal statement commented on by many of my interviewers.

Interviews I took:
VCU, Louisville, Iowa, Minnesota, Scott & White, OU-OKC, UT San Antonio, MetroHealth, Missouri-Columbia, South Carolina Palmetto, St. Vincent Indianapolis, Texas Tech.

Cancelled for one reason or another:
Nebraska, Penn State, Chicago Northshore, Michigan State, Illinois-Peoria, UTMB, LSU-New Orleans, Providence Portland.

Good luck everyone and I can't wait until March 18th.

I wish you the best of luck and that you don't match at the horrible MetroHealth.

As shared earlier... I would avoid Metro if you can. Things are changing and not for the better. People not matching into fellowships, interns and residents being fired (or contracts not renewed), piss poor education > bad board scores, heavy reliance on residents for service, no backbone by the staff as ED and surgery specialties DUMP on medicine, no job security... oh how I could go on... The longer I work there, the more I wish I had picked to go elsewhere...

Yeah thanks for the honesty, i'll do a bit more research on that program. i was trying to decide whether i would rank lutheran, case metro... and the fact that i'm thinking about it means that maybe i shouldn't

Do all of those places offer pre-matches to DO's, or mostly just IMG's?

i heard they took 2 DOs last year and didnt interview any DOs this year. it's pretty disappointing 🙁
one of the interns there told me that its really competitive this year, they got twice as many applicants as before

I know for a fact that USC invited DO's to interview this year.

Comlex I: 582
Comlex II: 590

Interviewed at:
Indiana U,
U of Louisville,
U of Cincy
Wright State
Penn State
Kettering(Dayton)
Christ Hosp(Cincy)
MetroHealth

Now that the match is over, anyone else willing to share where they interviewed or matched at?

interviewed at LLU, Scripps mercy, Cedars, UCLA-OV, Banner Good Sam, OHSU, USC. Happy to ans questions 🙂 Congrats to everyone who matched !!

Where are all you osteo MS4's applying this year? 🙂

still in the process of formulating a list of programs taht take DO's with just a comlex score which is taking painstakingly long

I applied to both DO and MD programs... still not sure which match I am going through- may go through both and just rank the top DO spots I like. Based on geography I like more of the MD programs much better, but I have a lot more interviews at DO places than MD places so far... so annoying to have to pick between the 2 matches!

Has anyone applied to and gotten interviews from the dually-accredited programs (specifically Pennsylvania Hospital and Sparrow Hospital)? So far I have only heard from university ACGME programs.

Yes. I've heard from Sparrow and Advocate Lutheran General. I applied to Sparrow from the AOA side. I applied to Lutheran General from ACGME and AOA side (figured it couldn't hurt) So I don't know how it would be if I had just applied to them through the ACGME side.

Do you know if we can rank Lutheran from ACGME as DOs if we apply through both? How about with the other dual programs? So far I know with Crozer it has to be via AOA. Thanks.

I think it has to go through AOA because they usually have a certain number of spots that they fill through the AOA match and then another number for ACGME. But I'm not positive. It would be nice if I could rank it through ACGME! But unfortunately I don't think that's the case. 🙁

I got 227 on step 1, 223 step 2, comlex of 480 on step1, 405!!! on step 2. I applied to 66 MD programs, about 50 university, 16 community. So far these are the interviews I've received. Hopefully the list will help someone next year to narrow down some schools, cause 66 programs made it expensive!!!!.
U of New Mexico, U of arizona, U of houston, T A&M, LSU, Creighton, Rosalind Franklin, U of Illinois Chicago, U of florida, U of indiana, of of Cinncinnatti.

I had an interview at a dually accredited program this past week. For them, they said I could choose to go the AOA or ACGME route, I just needed to let them know because they would not put me on the ACGME rank list unless they knew I was going through that match. It seems this is program specific though and if you were really curious you would need to ask each place when you interviewed. I did not personally ask but another interviewee brought it up so the program director talked to each of the DO interviewees to discuss which match they were going through.

I was thinking we could make a running list of the dual-acc. programs and where you need to rank:

Crozer-Chester - Must do DO match
Kalamazoo - Must do DO match
Albert Einstein - I think you can choose?
Christiana Care - You can choose.

Anyone have any info on Lutheran, Pennsy Hospital?

DMC Sinai Grace in Detroit- you can choose

Advocate Lutheran General is the only other dually accredited program I'm going to, so I'll have to see about that one!

as far as I know, if a program is dually accredited and you rank them on the ACGME side of the match (and they rank you on that side as well - i.e. you work it out that way with them), you essentially give up all ties to AOA.

I have prematch offers from Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas and Methodist Dallas! where shall I go? I am really confused! They both seem like great programs, I appreciate it if you guys gave me ur opinion. Am a US-FMG. Thanks

This thread probably isn't the best place look for answers to that question 😉

-School: DO program
-Step 1: 221
-Step 2: TBD (hoping to take it early and do better than step 1)
-Rank in class: top 1/3
-Pre-clinical: 82% average
-Clinical: 2 HP, 1 Honors so far (have not done IM)
-EC: some volunteer work
-Research: 1st author pub (case report), 3rd author pub (both from undergrad and both are in the field of neurology; none during med school)
-LOR: TBD

-Field of interest: IM
-Regional preference: Southeast / East Coast

My goal is to match into an ACGME university program. I understand that my numbers are not stellar by any means and that is why I would appreciate some much needed input and advice so that I can improve my chances of matching.

*Which programs in the SE/east coast do I have a shot at? I am definitely open to programs outside of these regions.

I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

What are my chances at these programs? Will I even receive interviews from these programs with my poor step 1? (If I were to do decent on my rotations and step 2):

Georgetown, GW, Howard
U of Miami, UF, USF, Mayo, Cleveland Clinic
Emory, MCG
UK, U of Louisville
Bayview (Johns Hopkins), U of Maryland
U of Mississippi
Drexel, UMDNJ
Albert Einstein, U of Buffalo, U of Rochester
UNC, WF
Thomas Jefferson, Penn State, Temple
MUSC
Vanderbilt, U of Tennessee, ETSU
U of Virginia, VCU
Marshall, WV
U of Arkansas
U of Connecticut
LSU, Tulane
Tufts, Boston, Baystate (Tufts), U Mass
U of Oklahoma
U of Texas, Baylor

I think this is actually a pretty good list (check mine in the WAMC thread if you're curious...my list has a lot in common with yours). However, my understanding is that Vandy, Jeff, U Maryland and UNC don't take DOs (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but when I last checked U Maryland and UNC had no DO IM residents...as for Jeff, my school is near Philly and word on the street is that it's notoriously DO-unfriendly).

I really appreciate the input. Just read your post on WAMC and from the match lists that I've seen for the past few years, it doesn't look like any DO has matched into Dartmouth or Brown. I also agree with Vandy and UNC but I do remember seeing a DO student matching vandy anesthesia. Congrats on the great scores! How did comlex go for you, I haven't gotten my score back but man that was rough. At this point, I just hope I passed. Are you planning on releasing your comlex scores? Good luck on your interviews.

Thanks - those scores were hard won, believe me.

Got 588 on step 1, 634 on step 2. My step 2 was also very rough, and I was half expecting to fail it. I was very surprised when those results came back. I guess I'll release them even though I doubt anyone on the allo side will care much. If it makes you feel any better, i studied no omm whatsoever, never used combank/comquest/comsaes and still ended up with that. I'm still not sure how it happened...

Good luck in the match... you have some strong credentials too.

Well, no pain no gain, right? Looks like your hard work paid off. I should've specified that I'm a third year student so I guess I have some time before the match. I was just curious at what programs would even offer an interview with my step 1 score. Being a DO I figured you had to at least get above the average (224) to get interviews but I hope its not true!

That's not necessarily true. If you were to kill your step 2 and have an otherwise great application, then you have a decent shot even with a below average step 1. It may not be at the best programs, but if you're okay with a lower tier ACGME program then you have a chance.

Nah, I don't think that's necessarily true. I've heard of people scoring between 200-220 and still scoring a good number of IM interviews as DOs...I think you'll still be in good shape that way.
