are there any DO's getting interviews with just comlex I and II at MD residencies?

If so do you mind sharing your step I and II score?

Well....last year I did. Applied 10 MD, 3 of which admittedly I shouldn't have since they never took a DO, and got 4 interviews. COMLEX I 490, COMLEX II 524. Matched my #1.

Did you rotate at the places you interviewed or matched?

So did you not apply to the osteopathic match at all? I am applying to both and I am assuming my step 2 will be similar to yours(my step 1 is only slightly higher than yours).

Is it normal to have stats like yours and match at your number one spot? From what I have been hearing people are wanting greater than 500+ but several places have told me 600 is required to be competitive?

Currently I will have 2 auditions set up back to back a two month break then I have one additional month where I can rotate at two different facilities(one of the OK programs and probably the new San Antonio program). Hopefully my car survives these travels.....

I did EM as a PA for 6 years so I don't foresee myself getting burnt out by the audition rotations.

It's so risky not going through with the DO match. Im not brave enough lol. Didn't take usmle step 1 and Im afraid I won't match with comlex only seeing How competitive EM is getting. Level 1=553 + Bottom half of the class= not the best combo for skipping osteopathic match.

Me and my wife just talked about that last night. I can't grasp how people can skip the D.O. Match and strictly go to the Allopathic match unless they are a superstar D.O. student. Seeing people not match EM with good board scores and good grades at my school not match is more than incentive enough to NOT take this lightly due to increasing competition.....

Personally I just hope to match EM, be able to pay loans back, and train the next generation of EM residents.

Can you expand on how people at your school didnt match? I don't know anyone other than people in my 3rd year class so not even sure How bad the competition is. Did they have usmle scores and not match or comlex only? Did they not match do or md match? Thanks. Just trying to get a general picture of what I'm in for...

I wasn't a superstar DO student by any means - average COMLEX and better USMLE. I did one audition rotation at a place that I didn't want to match, but wanted a SLOR from, and one EM US rotation because I wanted the LOR and the experience. Skipped the DO match although I was told I was 'ranked to match at my #1 DO program', because I didn't want to do four years. I matched at a ACGME place I didn't rotate at, but I think my EC's - EMS and US experience, hit just the right notes to get me in.

It's sort of a crapshoot. I will say that I was white-knuckled and butt-clenched for the time between dropping out of the DO match and Match Day.

Wow. Congratulations bud. This really gives me hope as a mediocre student. I thought the allopathic match was recently getting extremely competitive. Did you have anything unique going for you like research/leadership etc.

Why not just take the USMLE and give them an apples to apples comparison?

For me, two reasons - #1 was that I decided late to apply to the allopathic match, #2 was $$.

I mean this as constructively as possible. I am a DO that trained at an allopathic residency and have interviewed many candidates. I would comment:

#1 implies you didn't prepare well

#2 Most people spend $150,000+ on school but you wont spend $700 on the most important test that determines your residency (and potentially career). Implies poor decision making.

Just saying....

I would at least come up with a better reason. I would take every bit of advantage to have an equal comparison with the other applicants.

My school heavily favored osteopathic residency programs and I drank the Kool aid. It has nothing to do with preparation. I didn't even consider allopathic residency until the beginning of fourth year.

In terms of money, I don't particularly care if anyone thinks that isn't a good reason not to take the usmle. That was my reason along with not really having the time in fourth year to study for a board exam. I would recommend to any osteopathic student to take both, but I wasn't given that advice early enough.

Lastly, any program that is familiar with the comlex should be able to adequately compare you to other students in the absence of both exams.

I am in Pianoman's situation. I already took COMLEX I but didnt get a chance to take USMLE I.

I plan to take USMLE II thought. You think MD residencies will consider me if I just took COMLEX 1, COMLEX 2, USMLE 2 ????

Has anyone done that?

I took only COMLEX 1,2, and USMLE2. My scores were above average. I got 18 ACGME interviews and cancelled 3.

See after hearing all this I went ahead and took step I. Problem was my wonderful school gave us 12 days off between finals and the start of rotations. Yes 12 days of dedicated study time. So I ended up postponing USMLE and tried to take it while on rotations, bad idea. For some reason my school feels like since our grads are generally getting one of their top 3 choices they can completely ignore the fact we get screened out if we don't have the USMLE.

I ended up scoring avg on COMLEX and ~30 percentile for USMLE.

If I had my choice I'd want to go out west, where I'm from and have family. But there are a few problems I encounter.
1- There are only a handful of DO programs out west.
2- I feel like I'd be an idiot to pass up the opportunities in the DO match.
3- I don't think a 199 is gonna earn me many MD interviews Denver or further west.
4- Prematch offers are a thing of the past so not an option.
5- Combined match is at least 1 year out for me so even if I wanted to try that I'd have to do a TY or prelim in the meantime which I'd rather not since I've already spent 5 years on undergrad and another 5 on med school.
