Hey

What do you guys think, is there an advantage getting a double major when applying to med school? What do you guys think?

It doesn't really matter whether you double major or not. I hate to be repetitive, but what really matters the most are your grades, MCAT, and ECs. Go ahead and double major if you think it will make you happier and fuller as a person. If you can transcend that in your personal statement and interviews, then it helps. Other than that, simply double majoring will not give you an edge over other single major applicants. The key is: it's not how many majors or what major you pursue, but what you do with it and how it will transcend in making your a better understanding physician or person. :)

"The Admissions Committee is certainly impressed with an applicant that double-majors"

From the UCLA Admissions Office :)

There's no advantage directly. A double major simply means you are concentrating your electives in another field.

Just like virtually any other question, I think it depends. There is a big difference between someone who double majored in History and Government than History and Chemistry. Diverse majors and good grades shows a well rounded individual.

Double Majoring is just BS.

I did it because I thought it would help into getting into med school! NOT!!! i shoulda SERIOUSLY been a business major and it woulda helped me get into med school!

Yes, of course, all premeds should try to be as "well-rounded" as possible. Therefore, vide infra, one should double major. Also the double major will really help your application stand out.

If possible, double major in "Premed" and "Premed2 - the Diversity Curriculm".

It's all about living your life to impress the med schools.

my sarcasm detector is going off the charts!

Edu you seem to be overtly concerned about how and what will look good to get into medical school. I have yet to apply but take my advice for what it is worth (probably not much), major in what *you* like not to impress adcom's. If you want to double major because you enjoy both majors then do so, but do not do it with the intention of will it look good or not. Getting good grades and decent mcat scores looks good, having meaningful ec's look good, helping others out with no ulterior motive for yourself looks good, and the list can go on. So do what you like have a good time and you will be fine.

Yes definitely, double majoring can look good to admissions committees.

Whether or not you should do it is a different question. I think you should honestly assess whether or not you are interested in two fields and whether or not you can handle it. Only you can answer this. If you are honestly not interested in your two majors or you can not handle the rigors of taking on two majors, yes it might look good to admissions committees, but overall, your application will be lacking in other areas (ie. gpa, time for other extracurriculars, etc...) as well as your overall happiness.

If you are honestly and sincerely interested in two majors and feel you can handle it, go for it. But like the others said, don't do it because it will look good.

i am almost done getting a bs in bio and ba in history; i don't really forsee it helping me out that much, except i have a few more interesting things to talk about. the bio degree was my original plan, but i took a history class and loved it. there is no reason to double major otherwise. damned if you do, damned if you don't. hah kiddin, one should be fine either way.

Echoing all the other statements: You app taken as a whole (you as a whole) will determine whether or not an adcomm likes you enough to let you in the gates. I am sure there are thousands of single majors (me, for instance) who had their choice of medical schools. Make sure your whole app is good. The adcomms may notice you more if you have a double major, but they also may take notice if you started a free clinic or won a prestigious award, or did some really cool undergrad research, or came from a certain background, or can speak other languages, etc., etc. Who knows what any one adcomm is going to pick out of your app that speaks to them in some way. Do the double major only if you think it will enrich your undergrad years and make you happy. Otherwise, minor in the other subject that you would have doubled in, and take the "free" time you'll have to do more ECs or spend more time with family, friends, etc. Good luck!

Realize that double majors are a lot of work and that you might be better off using that extra time to get more clinical experience or leadership positions in school. I double majored, but that was because I went to a Community College and felt that I had to prove something to the ad coms. Ultimatly you'd be better off doing well in one major than getting by and doing two.

Maybe you can "Double URM" too. Chicano & Chamarro, that would be impressive.

Sorry, that wasn't meant to be racist, it's just that Latino doctors are attractive to more than just med schools

I think double majoring does help, but only if it is not bio and chem or something too similar. Admissions look for diversity.. You will get your science, get what you can now. Study spanish and business!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then NAIL the MCAT and you will rule.

Hey-

One more thing about double majoring. I think that admiss will like to see it. But NEVER NEVER NEVER do it just to be looked at highly or gain an advantage to get into med school. Do it because YOU want to and would do it anyways even if not applying to med school. It is tough double majoring and you need to have some fun in undergrad
