Double Major or masters or post bac?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe post-bacc goes on your undergrad GPA and masters is a whole different category. From what I've seen most people do a post-bacc to increase their GPA. I have seen people with rather low GPAs on forums kick major butt in post-bacc and end up getting into dental school. I mean that's my take on it...I'm sure other people have opinions. I'm sure a google search could help out too somewhat. In any case...do realize you will have to realllllllly kick some butt in your classes to have a shot...anything less than an A should not even be an option for any class regardless of how hard it is. Even if you do get less than an A you can't lose focus.

Hope I helped!

Thank you.

however... do you think that if I do not get into post bac programs (due to limited seats), is double majoring a better alternative? ( like self- post bac /informal post bac program you do it your self)

Hi,

I kinda asked this question before but still feel like I haven't really got much help/input. I know it may be repetitive question but please give me some input/advise/help. Thank you and much appreciated!

My current GPA is very low but I managed to raise my cum from 2.4 to 2.9 in 1 year (Junior year) by getting mostly A's and 2-3 B's the whole junior academic year. My current science GPA is 2.56 but haven't still taken last quarter of Bio and 2 more quarters of physics and have few C- (which do not count so I will retake them).

As you can see my GPA is very low but I was able to improve greatly. I screw up my freshmen & sophomore year in college but Junior I started to wake up and focus. (I had a lot on my plate those first 2 years... personal, health, and other emergency which I will write on my personal statement) I still have 1 more year and maybe an extra quarter in school which I know my cum GPA will be around 3.0-3.4 PLUS more if combined with the double major that I am doing at the other school.

Extra curricular activities:

1. shadow dentist (have about 50 hours so far)
2. Research for Entomology (Have 3 units of credit and rest are volunteer hours which I will continue to do until I graduate)
3. Volunteer at Hospital
4. Sorority
5. Will join dental club (senior year... i dont know if thats too late or bad?)
6. Any other suggestion for extracurricular activities?

I got kicked out of Biochem major so I had to find an alternative major. I chose Media & cultural studies (Humanities major).... which I cannot take anymore science classes. However, I am concurrently attending two schools. I am doing Media & cultural major at my first full time and part time (switch to full time later) at another school for Biology major so i can retake/take more science classes to improve my cum/science GPA. Also I "may" minor in entomolgoy (upper science classes of insects which can enhance my GPA.. so far i took 2 classes and have A+ and A and may be eligible for the minor).

QUESTION: (IF my first time application to dental school fails...)

Double major good idea?

OR do you suggest just finish Media & Cultural studies major and just retake classes?
OR do the above (retake C- science classes & finish gen science classes) and apply for post bac program?
OR do the above ( retake some science classes & finish gen science classes) and apply for masters?
OR try the double major (maybe minor also to ehance gpa and science GPA)?

Did anyone go through the double major instead of post-bac / masters and applied to dental school? Any alternative ideas or suggestions?

Also any other suggestion for extra curricular activities? Thank you!!
I was never an official member and was hardly ever involved at the predental club at my alma mater.

SO many questions...
ECs seems fine.
I was same. Screwed up and I just finished a second bachelors at local state university. Reapplicant this cycle.

1) Retake any C- that you have on "prerequistes" anything else, don't even bother.
2) If your whole purpose of taking Media and cultural studies is to improve your english, personally, I don't think that's a good idea. Unless you are quiet confident it's an easy major that you will get As.
3) with 2.5 ish, you probably want to raise your GPA by taking upper div bio courses. Whether you do postbac (formal or informal) or SMP, it's really up to you. Usually, postbacs are cheaper than masters, unless you find master programs which pays students.
4) Whether you do postbac or masters, you want to take minimum of 3 science courses per term. If you finish the second degree in bio, it's same thing as doing postbac.
5) Some people get in just by doing postbacs, others only masters, while people like me might need to do masters after postbac. For this precise reason, not many can give you a direct answer on this. Check postbac forum.
6) Get A or A- only from now on.

Hi thank you for the inputs and many advises given to me,

I tried switching into entomology or 1 other science program I was interested however due to my many credits that I currently have.... I can only choose humanities major (and may allow minor in a science.. as my only option... Already tried to petition to the dean but since public schools gets very iffy on going over the unit cap i got denied... but they said they might reconsider for minor) Currently I have 4.0 lower div classes and 4.0 in my upper div classes in my new major ^_^ . The main reason for me to be able to raise my GPA during my junior year.

So my second option was to attend private school (since most do not have max. unit cap rule) to finish up my general science courses I did not take and... improve my science GPA by taking upper div science through major in Biology. (And the school transfered most of my breadth/elective courses so I think I just need to take 12-15 upper div classes and 4-5 lower div classes.

(For re clarification)

Just show a good big upward trend and you will be fine. Try to finish science/BCP gpa with around >3.4. With good DAT, I don't see why not you wouldn't get in despite of poor first years of undergrad.
