I wanted to know that if the pacreas in Type 1 diabetes is affected by autoimmune process why there is no hypertrophy of the remaining beta cells?
Further is there any way where we use Cyclosporine in judicial amounts to control the hyperglycemia? The idea being that it can cause temporary remission in the bounding T cell function?
Thanks

Interesting question - I was wondering however, even if possible, if the trade-off hideous effects of a lifelong depressed immune system (alright alright, however much time it takes before your body destroys your puny pancreas) is worth not having to take insulin. No one's died of having to take their insulin, but being immunesuppressed sure does suck...

By the time someone shows signs of type 1 Diabetes, they have almost no functional beta cells left (There is often a brief "honeymoon" period of some beta cell function but even then exogenous insulin is needed). Immunosupression drugs are not going to cause the regeneration of beta cells. In order for this to even work, you would have to know someone was going to get Diabetes. Since this is not a simple genetic disorder, it's almost impossible.
