have anyone ever have doubts about becoming a doctor? even if one have the greatest passion for being a doctor, he/she might not get into a med school. I don't know if this is a really good question to ask ppl, but i am still not sure if i can compete with all the other pre-med students. Mant ppl say that a state schoosl are much easier to get into, is that true for UC's? I heard that they are more competive. i don't know, maybe i should of done the BS/MD program..hehe

The UC's are competitive, especially UCSF, UCLA and UCSD b/c of the large applicant pool (California is not exactly a small state). Some of the UC's have preference for in-state citizens, making it hard for other people to apply (UCLA is an exception to this).

And I just made you feel even better, right?.....Sorry 🙁

NP, i kinda knew that was the answer. Getting in to med school seems impossible for an averge/ slightly above averge student. I am not giving up hope tho..

Definitely don't give up hope. You have some time ahead of you, it's all about determination-seriously.

As much as you may want to stay in Cali though, it's a tough game. NYMC, Finch, and Drexel are filled with Cali residents. But you can always come back and practice there.

Honestly, if you really want to stay in California, but worry about your chances at UC's, Stanford and USC, think about Loma Linda too. I know it's a religious school, but they do accept non-seventh day adventists, and they try to "convert" everyone.

There is, however, a weekly chapel service, I think. From what I heard, it consists mostly of speakers talking about medicine from a religious standpoint, so it's not exactly boring.

But don't you have to give proof of church affiliation in order to apply? And they also want some church-related LORs, right?

They have accepted Jewish and Buddhist, as far as I know, so religious affiliation is not a requirement, but obviously it's a plus if you're baptized as a seventh-day adventist. I think Loma Linda places a lot of emphasis on the humanistic qualities of the applicants, and probably not much emphasis on research. Their primary goal is to train physicians that can do missionary-type of work (Though some of their grads don't do that).

I'm a baptized seventh-day adventist myself (well, technically). It's a rather conservative church but if you're christian or catholic, it shouldn't be a big adjustment.
