I just completed my internal committee letter application and now it seems that I will have a lot of spare time between now and AMCAS in June/July. Does anyone have recommendations for things to do during the gap? I have a lot of down time during work, so I've been trying to read up on investing, but beyond that I feel like there's more I can do to be productive.

I'm currently working full time, volunteering 2x a week, and taking one course after work.

Would love to hear what others are doing during this gap!

are you asking what you should do in your free time?

...I feel like there's more I can do to be productive.

Find paid work in medical field, rather than volunteering. Having money in your pocket is a good feeling.

This isn't meant to be sardonic, (and I don't know if you already have experience with this), but... Learning how to be a b!tch, and eating **** from people (especially those who get paid a lot more than you) is an invaluable experience. Building that "it's not personal" wall, now, is a great idea. You may think you are strong in character, but until you get bent over for an extended period of time, it's impossible to know for sure. Volunteering won't get you that, because of the "I don't actually have to be here" association the action has. Lol, I remember the first time I got chewed out by a big-wig surgeon; it was scary.

I'd read if it were me, as this would make you more knowledgeable for interviews etc, while also being personally edifying. Other suggestions include doing something physical for fitness, like picking up dance or rock climbing or going to the gym.

Pre write your secondary essay. That is what I'm doing. All the research on schools is really helping to narrow down the list. Best wishes.

Exactly, especially suggestions that would better prepare me for the 2016 app cycle or medicine in general... Whether it be suggested books, hobbies, or jobs as suggested above...
Read or listen to House of God. Have it on audio in my car. Also read anything by Atul gawande

Its funny you say that, I just finished reading complications and being mortal, and just started checklist manifesto this morning, can't get enough of it.

That's an interesting idea about pre-writing essays, where did you look to get more information on this? Cheers.

See the sticky in the school specific discussions for 2014/2015. Questions rarely Change between years. You will be thankful you did this. When my brother applied last year his August was miserable writing these things.

Write a bangin' personal statement, and monopolize all the resources of SDN and your university.
