I'm trying to fill out the housing application for SUNY Downstate, and it seems like the double rooms are really impersonal and college dorm-ish, but the singles are ridiculously expensive.

What do current students recommend doing? What's the market in Brooklyn for more spacious (one or two bedroom) apartments with kitchen for a comparable price?

If you're really from Durham (out of state), then definitely don't live in the dorms. If you live off campus you can get instate tuition for years 2, 3, and 4. Most off-campus kids live in Park Slope, which is a very nice but expensive part of Brooklyn that has direct subway access to Downstate via the 2/5 lines.

for the cost of living in the dorms you can share an apartment with a roomate in Brooklyn.

It is very expensive either way. Personally I could not tolerate the cinderblock and linoleum of the dorms, plus the lack of privacy and sharing a bathroom.

Having finished up at downstate 2 years ago I can emphatically say do NOT stay at the dorms. From a financial perspective, it is silly. For the same money find an apartment in sunset park, park slope (you'll need to share) bay ridge or dyker heights. The dorms are sub-par at best. They have only one redeeming value and that is their proximity to the hospital. I believe that their proximity is easily overpowered by he fact that they lack the comforts of home. The refrigerator is haf size, the oven is small, the place is stark and dull. Being close to your cadaver at 3 in the morning is a conveinence you don't need. Additionally, the neighborhood sucks. And what I mean by that is you are not going to be taking a stroll on the streets and find a nice restaurant to have dinner at. The supermarkets within walking distance are shady at best. DOn't get me wrong, Downstate the school, I really liked but the neighborhood and the dorms are not impressive. Of course this really shouldn't suprise you given that one of the things that makes Kings County hospital so educational is the fact that it is city hospital and is in a desperately underserved community.
