downstate housing

so as long as im not getting off any waitlists, it looks like im heading to downstate. anybody out there going to downstate too?

if so, what are you planning on doing for housing? i was told only 10% of 1st years get their own rooms...meaning 1 room shared doubles!

as someone who really prizes her personal space, i was wondering if there are any others out there thinking of living off campus, or have any other brilliant plans to avoid having to share a room with a roommate.

I am in the same boat. I'd really rather go to some other schools, but in the end Downstate looks not all that bad (at least with the excellent reputation they get for clinical education). As for housing, I am living with my parents, and so I will be commuting from Manhattan.

What other schools are you waiting to hear from? Was the finaid package good for you? Mine was a crappola.

my fin package was also crap..mostly unsub staffords. im waiting on nyu and rochester, although im not sure if i can live happily in rochester. im orig. from long island, but have been in california the last five years...brooklyn is going to be a major culture shock for me.

so are you def. going to downstate? how do you feel about commuting from manhattan? im thinking of getting my a place in park slope...am just worried about not being close to campus...

Well, Downstate is the only school I got in so far. I am on a waitlist at NYU, Mont Sinai, Columbia, and Georgetown. I am on hold at U Maryland (that's where my bf is!) and SUNY Stony Brook for which I don't particularly care.

Commuting doesn't bother me too much as living with parents does. But I don't think I want to live on campus on those not-too-cheap and not-so-quality housings either. Park Slope is a nice area, but still will be too expensive for me. 🙂

I guess I will see you this fall if neither of us has a better luck. Good luck to you.

I am also heading to Downstate this year (unless NYU has a change of heart). I am still deciding whether or not to live on compus, because it would be more convinient and fun (if that concept still exists in med school :wink: ). However, the dorms that I have seen and the location, scare me, plus it is pretty pricey considering the accomodations provided. So I am leaning towards living at home (which is also in Brooklyn). If any of you guys have some positive input on Downstate dorm life, please share, I'll gladly reconsider, but for now I am staying home.

Does anyone have any idea about when we have to put non-refundable tuition deposits down? I guess out $100 deposit to hold our place is already out of our hands. Just in case I get into one of the schools I am waitlisted in the course of the summer, it would be painful if I already paid couple of thousand dollars for Downstate tuition in advance. Also, anyone know what the deal is with the EMT course that we should have finished before fall?

Any thoughts?

The CPR course has to be completed by August 1 and it has to be given by the American Heart Association (not the Red Cross). Hello Downstate classmates:
The CPR course (not an EMT course!)is a one day event most likly on adult and child CPR. I will also be attending Downstate this August and will be living on campus. I presently live in queens and commuting will be a real pain (trust me), especially in brooklyn. I am aware that most incoming MS1 students get a single dorm at best, so don't get paranoid about having to live with a stranger. The downside of it is that one has to share a toilet with your next door neighbor and use community showers (which both suck!). I have a couple of friends that presently attend Downstate and from what I hear there is a good chance to get a single studio during the first year (MS2 students definitly get one). It all depends on the length of the waiting list for a single studio. MS1 students can still get a single studio, but it all depends on the lottery. Just make sure you hand in the residence form and indicate that single studio is your 1st choice and single dorm as your 2nd choice. It is due on 5/31, and if the deadline passes then there is a zero chance to get even a single dorm. Most likely one will get stuck with a double dorm room (which really sucks!). If any of you have any further questions feel free to ask.

PS (All rooms will have cable and high speed internet access by the end of the summer)

Are most of the APTs taken in New York, in the Park Slope area.

I thought there would be plenty of housing off-campus.

concerning brooklyn housing: having lived here 12 years, i can assure you most neighborhoods are pretty nice and safe (i was only mugged twice in those 12 years <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> ) east new york/east flatbush are best avoided though :wink: park slope is the neighborhood of choice lately, but feel free to look around elsewhere; public transportation will get you to downstate within 30-40 mins even from some of the most remote parts of brooklyn.

Like what Assassin said, it is mostly the living environment that I don't like about Stony Brook. I am a city person and I just don't see myself spending the next four years of my life in a prairie land without a sight/sound of the big metropolis. That's all. Not that Brooklyn neighborhood is the bext, but at least I will have better chance to be out in the city. (Stony Brook is about 2 hours away on a train).

This is all of course assuming that all SUNY's are comparable in the education quality I will be getting, which I think is more the less true. So all in all, my objection to SB is yes, mostly subjective.

On more thing I wanted to add. Brooklyn is NYC, and admittedly there are parts of Brooklyn that are quite nice like B. Heights/Carrol Garden area. BH is very expensive to live in though. Park Slope and Williamsburg are neighborhoods which the younger crowds caught on to. The rents there are also climbing up. People can also look into Battery Park City area. It's not too far away from Downstate, and due to 9/11, the rents there are supposed to be cheaper. Plus, as an incentive, they (Lower Manhattan Redevelopment something..) also pay you something like up to $500 per month to aid in your monthly rental. It's something worth looking into.

I live in brooklyn....about 5 minutes(by car and 20 via 2 buses-I have to transfer)from Downstate. Rent over there shouldn't be tooo too high. If anything get a roomie and rent out those basement apartments. Park Slope is quite distant from the school and the commute (especially during the winter) is no joke. If classes start at 9am, you have to wake up pretty early to get to school. Park slope/brooklyn heights are both about 2 buses/trains away (you have to transfer). The train lines that run around Downstate aren't the same that run thru park slope. And don't even think about Williamsburg....that's a world away. The only train that goes there are so out of the way it's not even worth it. If you are coming home late at night,that neighborhood looks kinda scary.

Maybe you can move to park slope in your 3rd year, but figuring all the studying you will be doing in your first and second years I would think you want to stay close to the campus.

There are pretty decent places around downstate but you will most likely need a roommate.

thanks for all your helpful replies. i was at downstate last weekend and spoke with the director of housing (who was the one who told me only 10% of first years get their own room). i'll keep my fingers crossed about getting a single.

i also turned down stony brook for downstate. i think living out in eastern long island could get depressing during medical school. plus, i was interested in a school with a larger class (100 seems so small to me). and most importantly, stony brook seemed to severely lack cultural diversity in the student body.

i guess if waitlists dont move...see you all at orientation this fall!

From what I know 10% or less get a single studio. I don't think he was talking about a single dorm. I was told from students and the assistant director that the only way one gets a double oocupancy dorm room is if one chooses to or if one misses the deadline for the lottery.

Does anyone know which of the CPR courses we are supposed to finish by August, 1? There are different ones like Heartsaver FACTS, Heartsaver AED Course, etc. Some take as many as 8 hours. Any idea? Thank you.

isn't it just the standard American Heart Association Certification course? here's the link downstate gave us that i used to find a course location: <a href="http://www.cpr-ecc.org" target="_blank">http://www.cpr-ecc.org</a> (i just filled in my zip code in the upper right corner).

i just signed up for one, and i know they vary in length from 2-4 hours, depending on how much instruction you need, etc. i think the 2 hour ones are for people who are just refreshing their skills or renewing their certification.
