😕

please help! I liked SB more but my family situation favors Brooklyn over Long Island. Also, cost of life in Brooklyn is cheaper than in LI. But with my heart I just want to get away from the city into a quieter area, such as Stony Brook.
Advice please!

so then go where your heart is. Stony Brook is near the LIRR so u can get to Penn Station and then pretty much anywhere else from there.

go to stony, downstate is in a very dangerous neighborhood. stonybrook also has a much more competitive match list.

You'de be crazy not to go to Stony. I know a few people who just graduated from downstate, and they did not have a good experience.

Stony isnt that far from brooklyn. About an hour. It seems you want to go there, so I think you should.

Thanks guys.

Also I forgot to mention that I live in Brooklyn, 10 min drive to Downstate, but I just hate the city, I have had enough of it, and I really hate the area where Downstate is located, sorry no offense to people who like it. If I move to LI, due to the family situation I will have to live in a 40 min drive to SB during the 1st 2 years, but it will most likely be very close to the rotation sites during the 3rd and 4th year.

I would never think that cost of life is cheaper in Brooklyn than LI. I think it's the other way around, myself. I am also from Brooklyn, and I'm going to be paying much cheaper rent in LI than I could have found in Brooklyn. And rent out by Stoneybrook is pretty cheap, also. I'm even changing my address on my liscense because the car insurance in LI is cheaper than what I'm paying now in Brooklyn. Although besides that, it's pretty much the same. If you awnt to buy a house, you'll pay a lot no matter what, but I don't think the cost of living is at all cheaper in Brooklyn, but that's just my experience.

Stony Brook is beautiful and is a wonderful place to learn, turst me from many friends who have gone there.

In my eyes stonybrook and downstate are very different schools which each have their advantages and drawbacks. So i will list what i think are the primary factors in play.

1) Do you want to live in a very urban and dense area such as downstate or on the the end of saburban long island?
2) Downstate is known to have great clinical experience due to its location. I dont know anything about stonybrook in this regard.
3) Stonybrook is known to have great resources when it comes to research. If you are interested in academic medicine or getting an extremely competitive residency such as derm or neurosurgery stonybrook is probaly a better choice.

Good luck,
Dave

I, personally, would go to Stony..hands down. The school is a science powerhouse.

You should really just check out the residency match lists for both schools. They are about equal in caliber, and both Stony Brook and Downstate will provide you with amazing opportunities. Also just decide on whether you want to stay in the city or not, I think ultimately thats all your decision depends upon.

Do you know which school (Stony Brook and Downstate) has a more flexible schedule and which one is more friendly towards med students having a kid while in med school? (e.g. taking a year off for maternity leave)?
