Just wanted to see, if it is as cut and dry as I have heard.

The question you should be asking is which one will I be happier at.

SUNY is cheaper and better placed (in my opinion) than Georgetown. People are probably going to say Georgetown based on rankings, but the difference between the two in terms of match, ect. is not significant. Both are good places to be sitting in a class or out on rotation. If the question was SUNY (or Georgetown) vs. Hopkins or Harvard, it would be an easier answer to say which is "better for your future (I don't even know what you mean by this.)"

Georgetown & SUNY are both in that catagory of schools (along with mine) respected broadly enough that you'll be on even ground with most residency applicants; so what will matter most are your grades, USMLEs and interviews.

I have seen the match lists for both schools, and Georgetown's can't reall compare to Downstate's. I know I shouldn't use these aspects as deciding factors, but the fact that Georgetown is sending a lot more people into VERY competitive specialties. So I feel like they must be doing something right. Plus The neighborhood around Georgetown is very nice when compared to Downstate's. I just feel that if I want to go into a really competitve specialty, Georgetown would be the better one to help me in that directon. I am just curious if it's name is worth the extra money. Another thing that I have heard is that Georgetown has more national recognition and that it will help me more if I want a residency out of New York state.

I think Georgetown's national recognition is more based upon its undergrad, and thus people outside of medicine would think it is very prestigious. However, in medicine I don't think that Georgetown is going to give you any leg up as opposed to Downstate. If you wanna live in DC, then obviously choose Georgetown, but beyond that I would definitely say Downstate.

Dude, do you just look for the opportunity to bash georgetown? This is what you say in every post regarding georgetown. OK OK OK no one thinks gtown is harvard/hopkins.. but come on! Its above average to say the least and you treat it like you have some duty to inform others it is not.

Look at the matchlist, georgetowns list is one of the best in the nation, Downstate is not. Georgetown WILL give you a leg up on competitive specialties, no doubt in my mind. There are just some haters here for unknown reasons.

What he is saying isnt entirely untrue, Georgetown law/undergrad are regarded as Gtowns bread and butter. But even "within the medical community" most would choose georgetown, or else, why would the match list be so ridiculous.

Gtown: Better for specialties, more difficult, more prestigious, better area.

Downstate: Cheaper, easier, still decent area (close to NY).

This guys obviously just trying to sell his own school. Look at his username; he's probably that guy all dressed in blue with his face painted whooting and spilling beer all over himself on ESPN basketball commercials.

They're both very good schools. And YES, they're both in the same catagory. Have a look at that SUNY matchlist; it's pretty good. A matchlist shouldn't be judged by how many grads are going into "specialties." I like the method of measuring how many grads got into their top three residency choices. Big middle of the road privates try to persuade students to go into things like neurosurgery, opth, & derm. My school "above average private school" does it too; by your criteria, we have a better matchlist than either SUNY or Georgetown. I can tell you though, it's not a better matchlist. If anything, it just translates into a more competative, stressfull atmosphere with more 'gunners' and bourgious fratboys talking about how they're going to be millionaire vascular surgeons.

SUNY is a great school though. And as for the Hoyas comments of SUNY being "easier", he's exposing how full of it he is. Med school is a challenge wherever you go. Heck, if SUNY manages to lighten the stress on their students and still do so well on the boards (they are right with Georgetown on average board score), I'd guess they're doing something right.

The three really measurable differences between SUNY and Georgetown are location (I'd personally still take NYC), cost, and that SUNY doesn't have a basketball team. If I were you, I'd choose based on location.

Gtown haters are so gay, you are just another one of them. I do not think my school/myself is god. We have a better matchlist than downstate, and its harder. eat it ***.

Wow. And you're going to become a physician, eh? Very, very disappointing. Consider yourself extremely fortunate that you made it into medical school, period. Bashing each other's medical schools is so immature--why? We're supposed to be mature adults going into this with a passion for medicine and a high respect for people, life and opinions. If you're going to compare schools, do it objectively--what's good for the individual's goals? And by the way, the matchlist doesn't necessarily correlate with success. And the "harder" the curriculum--well, perhaps that sheds some light on how difficult it will be for YOU.

Hey Rzarecta, I remember reading about your posts about interviewing at Georgetown. Did you finally get the letter that took forever? Were you accepted?

Yes I am a total "******." I am not dissing georgetown asswipe, I am just saying that a lot of the prestige associated with the name comes from the undergrad, and making people aware of it. Gtown is a good school with a great match, but the general consensus on this is that match is much more dependent on the applicant than the school, especially in terms of schools in similar rankings/prestige. You have to decide if Georgetown really can offer you what you want and can thus justify the cost difference. God if he said Georgetown and UND (my state school), I would say Georgetown in a heartbeat! But Downstate is a good school and people should recognize that the two schools aren't light years apart!

I don't think I ever said G-town was a bad school either. It's a great school; definately above average. So is SUNY though. As you said. G-town is not Harvard or Hopkins.

And why the homophobic slur? Thats just pathetic.

Depends where you want to end up for residency. Out here on the west coast, Georgetown is a lot more familiar and recognized than SUNY. I think the SUNY's get classified along with all the other state med schools. G-town is private and nationally known.
