just got it....

It seems that there are a bunch of us on the UB waitlist waiting for people on the Downstate Waitlist. Just wondering what this "alternate" list that you received is about, and if there are any implications or relavance to those of us waiting on UB's WL??? Thanks in advance.

the alternate list is the same thing as the waitlist. obviously, if someone is holding a spot at UB but subsequently accepts a spot at downstate, that will free up a spot at UB....

But is this list a pared down version of the original WL? They can't be informing people now of their WL status. How is the alternate list different from the original waitlist? I guess what I am thinking is that if this recent alternate list is somehow modified/shortened, then people who are "cut off" of the original WL who are in at Buffalo have now nothing to wait for, so their decision is made. If this is the case, then those of us waiting for the UB waitlist are now waiting for something which is now going to move more slowly than before. BUT, this could be my obsessive imagination... Any encouraging and edifying thoughts?

i think the only way a given applicant would be removed from downstate's alternate list is if said person notified the admissions office and removed himself/herself from the list. i understand what you're saying about UB but i dont think its healthy for you to keep coming up with hypothetical situations that COULD cause UB's waitlist to move faster...there's not a whole lot you can do but wait things out at this point. waitlists suck!!

The only reason I let my imagination wonder, is because this happened earlier in the season with UB. I got two letters. The first said that I was on the WL. The second, which came about a month later said that the WL had been modified to create an alternate list, which was a shortened version of the original WL. So, what happened to all those who got dropped? Well, they either don't go to school, or by default go where they are already accepted-- the resultant domino affect clogs up all the other WL etc. So, just wondering if that happened at Downstate.

Now I not only obsess about the WL that I am on, I obsess about other WL that might affect the WL that I am on. Bottom line-- you are right, wait lists suck!!!

joplo, at Downstate, alternate list = waitlist, so don't bother speculating otherwise.

I too received the Email around noon, and just replied. Hoping for the best.

I got it too & replied--Does this mean its gonna start moving???? Kidding, I wont start obsessing! 😛

I got the same e-mail too...sounds like they sent it to everyone 😱 ..am I the only out-of-state? Sounds like most of you are from around the area...good luck!!

I'll be withdrawing in the next day or so (an acceptance, I mean, not from the waitlist), so it'll move at least one slot.

Sorry, I know, but I literally just heard from my top choice school today. (Doesn't it seem like all the deadlines only apply to US???)

woohoo..us waitlisters are happy with people like you! Thank you! and enjoy your top-choice fo sho! 😀

Do you guys on the waitlist have all of your health forms and CPR requirement completed?

Anyone try sending a letter of intent?

I have submitted my health forms and received the email. Has everyone else who received the email submitted the healthforms? Maybe we can develop some speculative intelligence by correlating the health forms to the email, we can then assume that the waitlist has been thinned out. Speculation can go really far nowawdays, or not.

Hey Yodaf,

I submitted the health forms already and have been cleared, and i got the e-mail...yea, if everyone got the e-mail, then we can't even begin to guess...anyone not get the e-mail??

Good luck y'all! 👍

Sorry, but I got the email & I didnt have the forms submitted. So, I think everyone just got the email. My forms will be there this week, but they didnt know that.

i got the email and all of my forms are in as well...

I got the e-mail yest and i had all my health forms and cpr certif. submitted. I'm assuming that everyone who was on the alternate/waitlist got the e-mail
...and regarding the inquiry on who's out of state...i'm from CA.

anybody hear anything??? Just trying to keep this thread alive

Nothing yet 🙁
I met someone who is also on the WL @ DS & he had no info either. sigh.

Hi, that was me. I PM'd you.

hye what up guys...i still havent heard anything. we got what a month left. everybody keep your hopes up. hopefully we'll hear something. this is a long wait and a struggle.

We may have a month left for DS, but I have to leave for Buffalo by end of next week, if I hope to find an apartment! 😱 I have ~8 days to get the call or else its likely a lost cause for me. Hope you all have better luck.

I spoke to admissions--again. They said that there has been some movement & there will be movement next week, but that is all I got. Wow, DS is pretty tightlipped! 🙁
I think next week & the following are our weeks, everyone. Good luck & hang in there! 😀

I just wanted to second the thank you -- this is so stressful and you are very kind to share information.

i just called admissions to make sure they had all my forms, etc. i was told that there hasnt been any movement since the end of june?! i dont know how this is possible since a friend of mine just withdrew his acceptance from there....

Waitlists make me sick.

Hmm. The fact that there hasn't been waitlist movement does not mean that spots are not available, just that they haven't taken anybody off the wait list since late June. They are probably waiting to offer more positions at a point when people are more likely to accept AND subsequently keep their spots -- not leap to another school when they get off another wait list.

i hope they make their decisions soon. im packing to move to nymc on sunday and i dont think im the only one about to go back to school!

These admission's office workers should run for political office; they can't give you a straight answer if their lives depended on it. I don't understand why they just don't tell people where they are on the waitlists. What's the logic behind not disclosing your position on the waitlist?

And I'm not sure if it's logical to wait till the last minute to make acceptance offers. Even if they know where you've been accepted they don't know where else you've been waitlisted, so it's a real gamble on their part. If this is their strategy then they would have to make offers in late July early August or they risk starting class with empty seats.

This is all very assumptive, and you know what they say about assuming things...ass of u and me.

They have some reason for waiting this long--I just cant figure out what it is. I am sure they know which of us are accepted at which schools (from the email I received) & the orientation dates, so between that & what admissions said, I think this week will be important. That is what I am telling myself, anyway 😛
I think I'll go back into the fetal position now.

I agree that this week will be very important, but would like to add that next week will also be critical. After that a bunch of schools will have already started and movement will be very slim. But let's not go there yet.

There already seems to be some waitlist movement in the "July is our month thread". So I am assuming that we can expect some signficant all around movement this week.

Only time will tell.

They say the fetal position is good for your back.

amcas publishes a list of who's accepted into where so every medical school knows where you've been accepted....

Sort of strange that neither Upstate nor Downstate have had any movement (among SDNers) this whole month.

Yeah, it's just not right. Both Upstate and Downstate usually have a ton of waitlist movement. It's still the beginning of the week, so lets hope they spend Monday and Tuesday getting organized for the midweek phone calls. It's gotta give at some point, right?

Good luck to all.

ok, I'm starting to pack...I'm really gonna start now. I mean it, I'm gonna open this box. Was that the phone? Nope. Uh, Maybe I'll pack tomorrow. 😀

 That's exactly what I'm thinking these days............

What happens if the only other school I am accepted to starts on monday? Do I HAVE to go there, or can i still withdraw from there and move to downstate if i hear from them later on??? Somebody told me that once you start school, you can't move to another school...
if this is true, and i get in and then can't go, i'm seriously going to bitch out the admissions people

You are quickly running out of time. Once you matriculate at a med school you are obligated to continue, no do-overs. I'm not sure though if orientation counts as matriculation, but I think it does.

I've read on other threads (cant remember where) that people have withdrawn during orientation. People objected but I dont know if that is just a matter of ethics. But I ask you this:
If you have an offer from school X & you begin school Y, how can school Y tell you that you are not allowed to withdraw. Dont forget, School X knows when the orientation date of School Y is & yet still gave you the offer so what are you worried about. Just my opinion, I could be wrong. You should check it out from the school you are planning to attend--covertly, of course.
As far as classes, though--when do your classes begin? By then it might be pointless to worry about the WL. I'm figuring by 8/10 it is over!

But, should you rearrange your life for other people's ethics? I can tell you, I'd rather be able to see my fiance & family & withdraw during orientation than stick out 4 years & put off getting married bc of other people's ethical reasons. I would say, find out from the school you plan to attend what the financial penalty is (tution-wise) for withdrawing in the first week.

i think amcas guidelines is that a medical school can't take you if you've registered for classes elsewhere. however, i believe theres a fair amount of fudging that goes on between the schools....

I somewhat agree with you, but you must also take into consideration the fact that you might be willing to step on toes but the Admissions offices at the schools may not. You must assume that there is some professional courtesy between schools. In general schools that you are waitlisted at actually call the school you were accepted to in order to give them a heads up on your impending offer. I would think that they would think twice about offering you a seat if they know that the school you were accepted to has already started and they have other names on the list after yours.

This of course is only my opinion, but I think that if you have started orientation it is highly unlikely you will be offered another spot. Not to say it doesn't happen but I would think it's the exception not the norm.

I agree that it is likely a lost cause once orientation begins & definitely if class begins--I actually edited my message before the replies were even up bc I thought twice about that. I would not, personally, withdraw once class began & class starts just a few days after orientation. But, what I am still a little confused about is this: why would a school offer a spot to a candidate that is in orientation at another school. I read about this happening, but it doesnt make that much sense. This is why I think we'll get called before our orientations begin. (Am I too idealistic?? 🙂 )

There must be some, as you say fudging, if people really have gotten offers during orientation. Just to clarify--I dont actually know of anyone that has gotten an offer during orientation. Everyone I knew that was pulled off a WL (& there are several) were pulled before orientation, so...

finch's orientation began on monday
Downstate starts sometime in august, i believe...so i could start classes here on monday and get into downstate after classes began ...

I think you guys are right. During orientation, I think I'm allowed to withdraw, but once classes start, i believe have to stay...I wish downstate would get in gear and give me a decision

Has anyone called or heard anything from Downstate? It has been really quiet for some reason.
