Hopefully the list will shorten with NYMC starting next week...........

Double edged sword though. It also means NYMC won't be calling anyone from downstate who were already accepted. This is potentially the beginning of a vicious cycle.

Despite this I'm still optimistic that there will be some signficant movement next week. Most schools are desperately trying to solidify their enrollment.

Good luck to all.

does anyone know when downstate officially starts so that i know that that's the last possible shot i have in gettin in and probably try to find a job or something. this is too nerve wreckin..any one hear anything at all about movement.

downstate's waitlist is moving. i got the call yesterday and accepted today!

It is unethical to go to another school after starting orientation at your original school, bc you have now taken a seat from the original school that may not be able to be filled on such short notice. Unfair, and unprofessional.

This site gives the AAMC's stance on when students have to settle on a school and should withdraw from all other schools. In particular, point #9 spells it out, that once you enroll or begin orientation at a school, you can't switch schools. But this site says it's only the AAMC's recommendations, I don't know how enforcable it is.

Dowstate's orientation is from August 16th to the 19th and classes begin on the 23rd

Well, it happened. Someone finally said they want me. Ms. Levine the savior of Downstate gave me a call at about 2PM August 2nd offering me a spot in the incoming class of 2004.

Bottomline the waitlist is still moving, so there is hope. She told me that offers will be made all the way upto the first day of class on the 23rd.

This has been a surreal experience over 1 year from when I sent my AMCAS in. You know what they say, if it doesn't kill you it makes you stronger. Keep the faith and best wishes to everyone else waiting. 🙂

wow. congrats.

Awesome, Yodaf! I was following your plight on this thread and the Upstate thread-- congrats! You're in! Go partay!!

Indeed, great news yodaf.

Hard to imagine anyone more deserving! Make us proud, soldier.

Even in anonymity you all have a lot of class. 👍

Thank you all very much. I'm pulling for all you orphans to find a home in the upcoming days.

I guess it's time to change the signature to -

Previously waitlisted and I approve this message. 🙂

Congrats Yodaf, it's comforting to know that things are actually moving in the world. That call must have taken the weight of the world off your shoulders, I'm hoping for one of those myself. So if you got into Upstate, where would you head in the fall, or in two weeks I should say. Congrats again. 😀

Thanks DrKram20. It was a huge relief as you can imagine. I had my fill of just hurrying up and waiting. Since I'm from NYC there is huge chance that I will be attending Downstate. I really, really liked Upstate, but having a great deal of ties to NYC and shifting personal circumstance I'm leaning heavily towards Downstate. As soon as I have the offical paperwork in hand from Downstate I will make my decision and withdraw from Upstate immediately if I settle on Downstate. I gotta do what I can to help the process move faster for my SDN comrades. 🙂

I dropped by Downstate today to ask some questions about financial aid. I also spoke with Ms. Levine for a while and she told me that they are pretty much only accepting people who have 90% of their documents in order, health forms and the like. I think their only flexibility at this point is a missing transcript. So if you have all your stuff in you still have a chance.

Good luck to all, I'm pulling for everybody 🙂

well that's good news that they are at least takin ppl off the list. do any of you think it would be a good idea to meet with the dean. that's what im debating on doing. i've heard many ppl tell me that it might be a good idea. let me know what you guys think.

Why, do you think it will make a difference?

ok, here are my thoughts.....

this part was explained to me by a prominent member on the BU adcom: a medical school one week out of orientation will look into taking applicants who have NOT been accepted to other medical schools. they give these people preference because they know that if they were to offer a seat, said person would accept immediately. obviously, this would minimize wasting time calling applicants who have already been accepted elsewhere (and also the school to which they have been accepted, as per amcas guidelines).

on a more basic level, a medical school WANTS to accept students who want to be there. who wants to accept mopey students who'd rather be elsewhere?!

on a more personal level, DO YOU WANT TO GO TO MEDICAL SCHOOL OR NOT?? at this point you have absolutely nothing to lose!! there's absolutely no reason you shouldn't be clawing your way into school unless you really want to wait another year and redo the entire process and associated anxiety again. excuse my french, but seriously, grab life by the balls and squeeze. you have nothing to lose and only everything to gain......

you're definitely right..im def gonna call them tomorrow to make an appointment to meet the dean. i got nothing to lose. its time to bring out all the weapons.

Prabhara, is definitely right. We are down to the home stretch and if you really want it you need to show it. Downstate is surely in search of gaurantees right now, they don't want to wait till the last few days before school in order to get their ducks in order. Come on guys, get out there and make the calls. Just don't sound pushy or desperate, just sound confident.

Good luck to all you guys. 🙂

I just spoke with Victor Ruiz and he said that they accept people up until August 16 (he called it the "cut off day"), which is the first day of orientation. I saw that someone else had posted that it could be up until August 23...but I thought I'd just pass this on.

Good luck everyone...I'm still waiting too 🙁

Happily, I will be contradicting you, it is until August 23rd, the first day of class. They clearly prefer not to, but August 23rd is the last date. I was just in the admissions office for the past 2 hours getting all my paperwork completed and confirmed this info with a couple of people there. They seem to be very busy getting everything in order, and they do expect to be calling some additional students in the nearterm. 🙂 They seemed to think my questions about the waitlist were a little strange since I already got in, but somone has to ask for you guys.

Good luck to all of you. 🙂 🙂

thanks for the info yodaf...that is better news hehe...also good to know that there still might be some miracle spots available come next week...i'll cross my fingers! 😀

Yeah, I was pretty sure that you would be happy being wrong, at least this time. 😀 😀

so ive decided not to go down to see the dean. this kid i know also waitlisted called to make an appointment...the assistant told him that it was not a wise decision to meet with the dean..you may come across too desperate..the guy just said to be patient. so im not takin the chance. just gotta be patient..hopefully there will be some movement this week.

I know it's really tough to just sit around and wait, but you still have a chance. When I was at the office, Friday the 6th, a young lady was handing in her deposit and acceptance letter so i'm sure she had just gotten off the waitlist.

Good luck jiggaman, I'm pulling for all you SDN'ers 🙂

thanks yodaf...just wondering how many ppl on here are still waitlisted for downstate.

Just got off the alternate list on Friday afternoon, 8/6/04!!! Ms. Levine called me on my way to the beach, around 2:00pm. So there's still hope . . . good luck to all!!!

I'm surprised by what the assistant suggested. I've always been told by people on BU's adcom to be proactive and talk with the dean. Perhaps its different now that its so late into the game.

oh man this week is crucial. yeah i know another person that also got off the list on friday. so hopefully there will be good news this week.

tomorrow is another day

8 days left and counting..who else is left except me and beastmaster..anyone?

Congratulations to those of you who got off of the waitlist, and good luck to those of you still waiting. :luck: 🙂

hey guys just called ms. murray to talk to her about movement. unfortunately its pretty still she said. but she said we do have till the end of the week. oh boy things aren't looking too good. this isnt gettin any better. well maybe i should start lookin for a job or something..goodluck guys

Didn't some say that they will be pulling from the waitlist until the end of next week? Although with orientation starting next week it is doubtful that there will be any movement. Continued good luck to myself and the rest who are still waiting. 👍
