I called Downstate today... I told them its been more then 10 weeks and I just wanted to see when I should hear. They told me an update on my status was sent out on the 11th but a final decision hasn't been made yet. Do you guys think this means I got waitlisted? I asked the women on the phone and she said not necessarily, but what else could that mean??

Hey medschool9, I called Downstate today as well because I'm going on almost 14 weeks now since I interviewed and they told me they sent out an update as well. But the lady did also say that my application was on hold and that no final decision had been made. Personally, after hearing all the discussion about the "hold" status, I'm just getting a little pissed off. I mean 14 weeks is a little on the ridiculous side to still not have made a decision.

Does Downstate reject post-interview?

One person that I know got rejected after interview.

so "hold" means more waiting........thats great.... I dont think i can take this anymore...

any new news on Downstate anyone?

Got the "hold" status today...10 weeks and 1 day. They neigher want to accept me right away nor put me on the alternate list, will review my app. again later. Don't know what this means.

On "hold" too. Are we are on hold for an alternate list or is an acceptance possible? The wording in the letter makes it seem like the best that can be hoped for is to move from hold to alternate . . .

I think you are right. As I am re-reading this letter, it seems to me that the best option after this hold status is an alternate list, or rejection otherwise. Seems that there is no option for direct acceptance after the hold. 🙁

Dr.Kitty... I'm also waiting on this horrible hold list. A very good friend of mine is a second year at Downstate and told me that you can (and many students do!) get accepted directly off the hold list. He was actually in the same position and got accepted from his hold status. However, you could also get waitlisted or rejected also. So I would say that the hold list is actually better than being waitlisted because they go through the hold list before they make a final waitlist. He also said that many students get off the waitlist as well (I guess he asked his classmates about this). There was something about a high priority waitlist and a regular one. He said that they usually take most everyone in the high priority list and sometimes have to go to the regular one. So try not to lose hope... 🙂

Thanks for the reassurance, Fireman. I was just reading a thread on downstate from 2005 regarding hold status, and it does look like a lot of people got off the hold in June and July last year. So yes, there is hope, and good luck to all those waiting :luck:

I too, was placed on the Hold list... it seems like the hold list is a wait list. Has anyone been placed on a list actually called the "wait list"?

I've posted a link to last year's "HOLD" thread earlier, but basically, you CAN get accepted off the "hold" list, it just means that your application will be re-reviewed, probably in june. Several people from SDN got in from the "hold" pool last year.

Relax people.
As has been said before (by me and others), the 'hold' is NOT a waitlist or a waitlist for the waitlist. It just means "sorry we are gonna keep taking our time to evaluate your application - it could be months before you hear from us...". But from hold you can still go into any of the three categories: accept/reject/waitlist, it is just unclear when that might be (might not be til july).

Good luck peeps. Plan something nice for the weekend!

Did anyone who interviewed in the middle of March hear anything back yet?

Also, it seems like no one is getting an acceptance?! Has anyone who interviewed from March on been accepted?

Thanks

And is anyone actually getting directly waitlisted post-interview?

If he is offered a spot at Downstate, he'll pass it up and go to Stony if he is set for Stony. It just makes other on hold wait a bit longer 😳 which at this point doesn't add to the already ridiculous wait 😳

What she said- I'm almost completely certain I am going to Stony but Downstate is another school that I was/am HEAVILY considering.

Don't worry, I'll decide ASAP- I don't want to hurt anyone else!

I interviewed on 3/13 and I still haven't heard anything. I called 5/1 but they said they couldn't tell me anything over the phone and referred me to email. So I emailed and the reply was 10 week wait due to backlog. This week marks that very special anniversary, so I am expecting something soon.

Hey SUNY Downstate folks. Most people I knew that got in off hold got in in July last yr.. Hang in there. Alll of them did get in. They wait extra long after others.

Good news. Thanks akaz. 🙂

hey guys, got in today! 9 weeks, 6 days, big envelope w/ a little envelope inside. good luck!!

I got the "on hold" letter today. Tell me if you guys are getting this same letter. " Your application will be review in late June and a decision will be made on whether you are added to the alternate list." So the best I can hope for is the waitlist?

Congratss!!!

Just out of curiousity, when did you interview? Also, are you from in state or out?

from past years how many people get accepted directly from hold? I've been on hold since october.

i interviewed march 14, and i'm not sure whether they considered me an in-state applicant or not. on the supplementary i marked that i was not a NY state resident "at this time" but noted that i had maintained a domicile since august 1, 2005 (which will make me eligible for ny state residency by the time enrollment/orientation rolls around)...

Does anyone know who is the Admissions Director? Is it Lorraine Terracina? I can't seem to confirm that info on the website....

Lorraine Terracina, PH.D is the Co-Chair, College of Admissions Committee. I can only tell you that one acceptance letter came from her on behalf of Dean Eugene Feigelson M.D., Dean of the College of Medicine. I hope that helps and good luck!

Just received this e-mail from Downstate, in response to my inquiry regarding my status:

"Due to the backlog of applications this year, applicants in the "Hold" category will be re-reviewed by the Admissions Committee towards the end of June for possible placement on the alternate list. We apologize for the delay.
SUNY Downstate Admissions Office"

Does not sound too promising :scared: 😱 🙁

I hope this does not mean what it sounds like....

I got the same thing, but in snail mail. I wonder if that means the best we can hope for is the waitlist.

Hmm...that makes it official for me then, I'm headed to Case Western. (I'll already be in cleveland in june and will have an apartment, etc. Also, orientation starts in early july) I love case, but was still 5% unsure since downstate is SO much more affordable. Oh well. Good luck to all my fellow hold-ees (and anyone who hasn't heard yet)!

Did you get this after inquiring about your status or was it just a random snail letter? I didn't get anything like this.

I am waiting on both downstate and buffalo? Are you from NYC region? I would choose downstate simply because it is 20 minutes away from my house. So I can enjoy home cooked meal sometimes. 😀

I live a 20 minute walk from Downstate. But I was kinda looking forward to getting out of the city. Hmmm. Darn, decisions decisions, though I know many of you would love those kinda decisions. Sorry for imposing. 🙂

Congratulations, Willow18! It is good to know that big envelopes are still being offered. I interviewed 9 weeks ago as of today, so I guess I have a week or so left to wait.
