just found out I'm on the "Hold" list awaiting decision to be placed on the alternate list.

I have a question for those who were placed on hold earlier (say last december). Did your letter also include this little clause about being placed on the alternate list? or did it just say you were on Hold and to wait final decision without mention of the alternate list?

FYI, I interviewed in March and found out this week i was on Hold.

This waiting stinks. 👎

Hi guys,

I just found out last week I was accepted at Upstate. Although my app is on 'hold' at Downstate, I am going to write them an e-mail and follow-up with a phone call to inform Admissions that I have accepted a position at Upstate and am withdrawing my application at Downstate from further consideration. I don't want to take up time or space of the ADCOM when they could be evaluating other applicants. I hope this helps all of you who are still waiting!

By the way, the discussion regarding the 'hold' category has been virtually beaten to death, but to reiterate: you may still enter any of the three admissions categories from hold (accept, reject, waitlist). I don't think it means that you have to go to waitlist first. By saying they will be deciding who will be put on the waitlist, they also mean they will be deciding who to accept and everyone else that is not rejected will go on the waitlist. That is my interpretation based on previous years discussion of the 'hold' category at Downstate. Furthermore, virtually everyone who was admitted from 'hold' was informed in July, so be patient! Spots keep opening up every day and Downstate admits students up until very late! 🙂 👍

They have a "backlog" of applications this year....I called the Admissions Office last week....from what I understood, the "Hold" category will not be any different from previous years....i.e. they will still accept applicants directly from that list....I hope that is true....but the wording of their letter
( I received an e-mail in response to a status check)...did sound pretty scary.

Wow...that looks pretty scary. But has anyone been put on the alternate list this year? All people that I have seen in this thread are in hold category. If there are people in the alternate list, has there been any acceptance since May 15th? Maybe just like some school, they first put all the wait list people in the hold category, and by the end of june, they will start re-evaluate us and make an alternate list? Is alternate list ranked? Does anyone have answers? 😕

I dont think anyone is on the alternate list yet... seems to me that whoever isnt accepted right off is placed on the hold list. Then, at the end of June/early July, they review all the applications again and accept some more, put some on the alternate list ,and reject some....

I've been "on hold" since October and today received a DHL express mail package stating that the entering class is filled and I am placed on an alternate list.

After seeing the DHL package I really thought it was an acceptance...just another way for downstate to screw with our heads...

In the Downstate's class thread, it says that the class size of 2006 entering class is 205. I don't know what to make of this. It's possible that they increased the class size due to ama asking for more doctors but my concern is that they overaccepted and won't even touch the waitlist.

Not really. I e-mailed them an update and they responded that they'll put in my file for the review. So either they will still review files (which may indicate that there will be openings) or, more likely, it's their standard reply message.

I just called them... they wouldnt really tell me anything. Just that they've started reviewing the hold list and that there are still spots left in the class.

i've thrown around the idea of an mph, but I want an M.D. either way, and I'm not sure an MPH will help me get that, so i'm just going to apply again. I got a few interviews and a few waitlists so I figure i'm right on the edge, i'm retaking the mcat and doing some extra things, applying to more schools, hopefully it'll get the job done.

wait, did you get a straight rejection or a letter stating you're put on hold? There''s a waitlist, but it seems that everyone on SDN either get accepted or put on hold rather than an alternate list.

Good luck to all! For those of you who have already heard from Downstate, was the package delivered via special delivery or via bulk mail? Just wondering if I should continue running to the mailbox during torrential downpours or just wait patiently by the door? 🙂

This process is a slow death!!! Gotta stay positive so good luck to all again!

Addendum: I just emailed the admissions office regarding the status of the class and what are our possibilities off of the hold list. I know someone else already did, but I just wanted to confirm. It's funny because when I called, they told me they didn't have that information, but to email them and I will receive an answer shortly. That's a little weird, but as soon as I get an answer, I will let you all know!

For those confused about the DHL package, it can mean either acceptance or placement on the alternates list. The package, I suspect, is a large envelope similar to the ones used for priority mail. I think that at this stage most likely the packages will be for waitlist spots. But, SUNY does a lot of shuffling, so waitlisters have pretty good odds of getting in.
