Hi everyone I am a physical therapist who has been working for a little over a year. In my last year of PT school I began having second thoughts about the profession and going to medical school instead. I decided to finish my rotations since I was basically finished already and try to work for a little to see if I would change my mind. I don't mean to knock PT in this post it has moments where it is very rewarding and some people thrive in the field, I just feel I don't think I am one of those people like I originally thought.

Fast forward after a year of work and I am missing the challenge that I thought PT would offer. I have completed all the courses required to enter med school and just need to take the MCAT to apply. Upon acceptance if I got accepted I would be 27.

The main reason I want to make the switch is because I don't feel stimulated in my current field. I feel like I need something that presents a challenge to me. I feel the urge to learn more and more and PT continuing ed courses don't seem to be the learning I yearn for. The truth is I really like learning about medicine and I feel like if I don't pursue this feeling I will regret it. I love helping people which was why I got into PT to begin with, but again I just feel like I need more.

A little about my academic standing. I graduated my undergraduate program with a degree in exercise physiology and a GPA of 3.85 with all the medical school pre-reqs included. I graduated PT school with a 4.0 I don't really know what my chances are of getting accepted to med school and I'm assuming that will largely lay on what I score on the MCAT. I know there have been posts about this on here, but I don't think any have been on here in the last few years. I was hoping to just get some advice, hear what people think/have to say, and perhaps hear from anyone that has done this before.

Thanks

This is a perfectly valid reason. BTW, I have had plenty fo students who have done PT.

MCAT will make or break you, but you'll also need the ECs as well. Obviously you have the patient contact experience, but you'll need to show off your altruism and humanism as well.

When I was in PT school I volunteered as a student PT for a year at a free medical clinic for patients with no insurance, would ECs like this I did in PT school still be relevant for a med school applicant?

This counts as fine clinical volunteering. What I was referring to was non-clinical volunteering. The ideal is service to others less fortunate than yourself. Check out your local houses of worship for opportunities.
