DPT/MBA Program

I'm considering doing a DPT/MBA dual program. Are there any students here that are currently enrolled in a dual program? If so, would you recommend it? Even if you are not enrolled, what are your thoughts/advice? Is it worth it? Thanks in advance!

I'm not enrolled in a DPT/MBA program, but I am enrolled in a DPT/PhD program. As for the DPT/MBA program, I think it'll give you an advantage compared to other PTs in terms of managerial/administrative positions in hospitals or clinics. Also, it's sure to help you out if you plan on setting up your own practice. If you're thinking of that, then it's good to take the MBA now, than wait later when tuition will be even more expensive. And correct me if I'm wrong, the dual program is actually shorter than if you were to take DPT now and the MBA later on. I think it's a good idea, but I know there are people out there who would disagree and claim that the MBA is unnecessary and/or somewhat useless.

FYI...My area manager in charge of about 12 outpatient clinics is a MSPT/MBA. However the Regional VP above him is in charge of 35 clinics and has only a BSPT.

@goyo1010, thanks for your "pro" perspective on it. I've definitely come across the disagreeing side of it where people have said that they teach you how to manage in PT school anyway.

@DPTinFL, thank you also for your input. Like I've mentioned, I've definitely heard this side more. Seems like I'd really have to look more into it and understand both sides.

If there is anyone else out there, I'd really appreciate all your opinions! 🙂

There is no way the management skills taught in PT school can compare to what is taught in MBA school. If you attend a good MBA program, say the top-30, you will have to complete multiple projects and internships in addition to the usual classes in finance, taxation, investment analysis, cost accounting, organizational behavior, etc.

It helps if you have had a few years of work experience before doing a MBA as you'll get a lot more out of the theoretical concepts. I had 15 years (and I was the second-oldest in my class).

I think a MBA is very valuable in that it gives you the skills to analyze things from a hard, cold business perspective. Very few of us have an accurate and instinctive feel for what is a good or bad business proposition. So if you want to eventually open your own PT practice, definitely do the DPT/MBA.

^^Agreed! I've been looking at a couple of schools that have the dual program and they seem doable with PT school. I've always wanted to open up my own practice in the future so I think an MBA degree is the way to go too, especially with how competitive everything is becoming. Thanks for your reply!
