DPT program accreditation?

Oy, I believe it takes a while.

The CAPTE has a ton of evaluative criteria that the university must meet to be accredited for the first time. I think maybe anywhere from 1-3 years after the establishment of the program at the university and application to be accredited is sent (Hopefully, not 3 years as that's the length of the average DPT program... lol)

Others, correct me if I'm wrong?

The school will not be accredited until just before the first matriculated class graduates, so generally this would be just under three years from the beginning of the program.

Midwestern in AZ is "pending" first class to graduate in 2012. Question - How risky is it to attend / be accepted to a program that is "pending"?🙄

Per APTA's website, Midwestern's first class won't graduate until May of 2013, so accrediting should happen in spring of 2013. Until that time no guarantees, so potentially money wasted if they fail to win accreditation. However, some programs claim to have "teach out" agreements with nearby accredited institutions, meaning that those accredited institutions guarantee that, should the unaccredited school fail to win accreditation, they will accept those students into their programs and allow them to complete their degrees at the accredited institution. I would check with Midwestern to see if such a guarantee exists. Given that they already have an accredited program in Illinois, I would think that the risk for this particular institution is pretty low.

Good stuff. Thank you for your replies.

i am currently in Midwestern's (Glendale) program. they cannot be accredited until the first class is graduated. from what i was told, our curriculum is highly based off downer's grove's and our chance of not being accredited is very low. they told us that if they end up not being accredited that we would be transferred to nearby PT schools to finish.

During a tour of Midwestern-Glendale this spring I was told that they would be changing the curriculum a bit - sure not much. I will keep checking. since I live in Glendale I have been watching their program since it opened. The entire school is fairly new. Looks like Touro in NV is not accredited yet either. First class grads from Touro 2012
