Which doctor are you talking about?

Which doctor are you talking about?

I'm talking about "Dr. 90210" of whom the show is based on.

His name is Dr. Robert Rey.

"The show began by focusing on the life and practice of Dr. Robert Rey, a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills.
Other surgeons featured in the first season included Dr. Ellenbogen and Dr. Kotler. The show's lineup has expanded to include other practices such as that of Dr. Gary Alter, Dr. Jason Diamond, Dr. Linda Li, brothers Dr. Julian Omidi and Dr. Michael Omidi, Dr. David Matlock, Dr. William Aiello, Dr. Dean Manus, Dr. Gary Motykie, Drs. Susan and Brian Evans, and Big Brother 2 winner Dr. Will Kirby."

And I am talking about the last Dr. Will Kirby.....D.O.

Kirby is a tool too.

There are no shady plastic surgeons in beverly hills. Especially DO's, who are in medicine only to do primary care, and are notorious for treating the whole ****ing person.

All the Dr.90210 characters are shady, but I wish I had their bank account😀

Yea, but sometimes I wonder how much some of those guys TRULY make. I suspect that many of them are really living above their means just for the sake of appearances. Socal isn't exactly a cheap area and they don't really seem to skimp on anything there either.

These guys are also marketing machines, too. They are probably making a few extra bucks from the television shows for letting them film their daily lives. Additionally, the shows act as an hour long commercial for their individual practices and this commercial is broadcast around the world. The noteriety they gain allows them to charge higher rates and become wealthy.

I heard from a friend that this is indeed true.

You were misleading by referring to Dr. Kirby as "Dr. 90210." He may be on the show, but Dr. Rey is "Dr. 90210."

A few things on this thread ...

First, yes there is a DO on dr. 90210 (see avatar), Will Kirby DO. However, he is not a plastic surgeon ... he's a dermatologist. He went to NOVA, did a year of internal medicine in FL, then big brother, then his derm residency with Western University --> dr 90210.

Second, Dr. Kirby probably seems like a tool sometimes ... but the reality is that the guy is a fantastic businessman. He not only pimps his practice out on the show, which I'm sure is pure gold for business, but he also owns a line of laser tattoo/hair removal clinics which he regularly features on the show. Big bucks. He also has his own line of skin care products, and I'm sure makes good money on all his tv stuff. Last, but not least, he seems to be a good doctor as well, and although he seems to definitely take a business like approach to his practice ... he's doing well.

Third, The reason why I like Dr. Kirby is because he truly shows that there is absolutely no limit or mainstream difference between the MD and the DO. This guy built an empire, and his success really puts the 'are you ashamed to be a DO' and 'Can a DO practice medicine' into perspective.

Lastly, about the money thing ... heres the deal. Cosmetic surgery in Los Angeles is a business that thrives on word of mouth, advertising, and who's in, who's out. Practices thrive or fail (in LA) based on this popularity. Being on a show like this puts business through the roof. People see you on TV and automatically assume you are awesome, operate on celebs, etc etc and your appointment book suddenly fills. This = a ton of money, even though cosmetic surgery has a huge overhead, massive mal practice etc etc. However, I'm sure these guys make a TON off the tv show itself, which gives them the fame that boosts the practice and leads to the creation of products, books, or anything else with their name. This collection of everything is what makes them stinking rich. Trust me, Robert Rey can't live above his means by buying a 5 million dollar mansion in Beverly Hills.

Now, without all the fame cosmetic surgeons in LA still do great, but I doubt most have the lifestyle of the guys that have their practice on a major tv show every week.

-Just as an aside, I read an article that Dr. David Matlock now has a copyright on the term 'laser vaginal rejuvenation', trains other surgeons how to do this procedure, only people who buy the laser from the company that he owns can be trained, and he has opened businesses, is trying to create other tv shows, written books ... etc etc, and now claims he makes 12 million a year.

Nice, informative post as always Jagger. It's entertainment I know, but Kirby seemed like an uber prick to me. He was funny when he said in all seriousness "I'm not good at what I do, I'm awesome". No, not so bad. The scene then cut to Kirby having drinks with his friends and the clip is edited to suddenly show his big head and he says to the camera "my friends all want to be me! Suck that bitches!" OK, he didn't say that last part but he continued to elaborate on how his friends were all envious of his perfect life. Yes, there's editing and entertainment value so I'm not singling him out, just commenting.

Rey is just a narcissistic fruitcake who neglects his wife (Haley?) and kids, money or not. He looks like a clown in those suits but I know they cost more than my vehicle. Still, you can't buy "style" and class. I know there are sacrifices to be made at that level but some of it just wouldn't be worth it in the big scheme, at least from my perspective. Honestly, I'm unable to envy those who do that strictly for greenbacks but I still have respect for the "entrepreneur" in them and our capitalistic society - capitalism breeds innovation and betterment. Those medical folks who advance mankind in it's entirety fall into a completely different category in my book.

I guess it makes for good TV!

Dr. Kirby may seem like your standard hotshot Hollywood Derm, but the guy does a lot of good with his money. Dr. Kirby, an alum of NSU, donates a lot of cash to help fund our DOCARE chapter and make it one of the best in nation (my opinion of course as I will be an officer of it next year). This club takes medical mission trips to underserved countries and without Dr. Kirby's support would be grossly underfunded.

Thanks Dr. Kirby!

I think you are underestimating the price of plastic surgery + not accepting insurance. I have no doubt that they are millionaires.

I heard about this ... excellent program, and very cool on Dr Kirby's part.

There's Dr. 90210 types that make millions and buy hideous suits and fancy cars, then there's Dr. Paul Farmer that donates just about all of his time and money to those who truly need it.

I'd personally like to fit in somewhere in between. Do well and do good. Nothing wrong with success, but it rubs me wrong when it's flaunted, especially by a physician. To each his own I guess. I'll say this though, I've got a lot more respect for Farmer than any d-bag dermatologist with a TV show. To be honest, I wish Dr. 90210 wasn't a DO. It's nice that he donates to DOCARE (seems like the kind of guy that would run and tell all his friends bout it) but he's still a tool.

and I think you are underestimating the sheer cost of the lifestyle when living in LA. 😉 I have no doubt they make a ton of money, but being a millionaire doesn't mean one SHOULD be spending as much as they do on the houses etc. There is a point where they have to show flash. On one of the episodes, the couple was house hunting and he was the first doc I heard mention how they really shouldn't get a house because it was just too much money. I've seen small houses relative to what I grew up in go for over 1.5 million in that area. I don't like to talk about money, but my dad is a doc and has done quite well in investments...in addition to working his arse off 70+ hours a week as a radiologist in a small midwest town. Not tv doctor well, but enough to the point we COULD have done that kind of crap if we really wanted to.

I am trying hard to not pass judgement on these guys, because t.v. editing does a lot to develop the character we see. I don't think these guys will be living on the streets, but being a millionaire does not mean it is impossible to live above what one should. From what I've seen, it makes it more likely. (I have a saudi friend from psu that went shopping in nyc and she casually spent 45,000 on clothes...in one weekend.) Your lifestyle tends to grow faster than your income sometimes. I'm sure these guys also have a ton of people coming out of the woodwork. That being said, I'm pretty sure I'd wh0re myself off this second for the kind of money they are making...I'd like to think I'd take the higher moral grounds, but yea, probably not.

I think this is key.

It's a lot harder to edit stuff in than it is to edit stuff out. Some of the things that come out of those guys mouths are pretty pathetic, regardless of editing.

i totally agree dr. kirby is a tool. nonetheless, so am i. haha
