Has anyone else run into some of these looney tunes lately... ? The ones that eschew "western medicine" in favor of these "essential oil" potions and then... come to the ER ?

I had two in one shift the other day. * Plays circus music *

They're huge in Utah. I had a cancer patient who had been pouring Doterra oil on her fungating breast tumor for two years. Now she had lungs full of mets and was severely dyspneic. I admitted her for comfort care.
Aren't DoTerra and Young Living based in Utah?

I had a similar story with tea 'cleanses' which did nothing to stop her breast cancer from metastasizing to her spinal cord, causing paraplegia and ultimately a referral to hospice.

What gets me though is if these patients truly believed it was going to cure them, or if they had some underlying pyschological disorder leading to their behavior. or both.

I'm glad I don't have to manage these patients on an ongoing basis. If this subject comes up, I generally try to ignore it and just go about my eval and recommendation.

I gave up on trying to talk people out of this stuff. Kind of like trying to reason with a drunk.

I've seen two patients who sprayed WD-40 on their joints as a cure for arthritis. Does that count as an essential oil? They both swore it worked better than anything else they'd tried.

The one gal was in my ER for N/V related to pregnancy at ~4 AM. I asked her what she's tried so far to help. The responses I got were:

"Lemon oil, placed on the soles of the feet."
"Lavender concentrate on the forearms, but only after magnesium powder had been applied first."
... and of course "Marijuana".

I had to inquire further; and I found myself being "educated" by the patient, who said at one point: "I just wish that doctors knew more about how the body actually works." Never was there an acknowledgement that these mystical potions had failed to control her nausea, thus prompting her to seek help at the ER.

I can see it now...the rise of the acute care homeopathic nurse practitioner.

I had a patient who was in the ER for a headache tell me she preferred naturopathic remedies when I offered her Motrin and Reglan.

I refrained from suggesting I could try to transfer her to the naturopathic ER.

Turmeric on a "riser"

Ever seen that one? ("Riser" = boil, "risin' up)

The South. Lol

In my case it was both. A more rational patient would realize the oil isn't helping the fungating breast tumor after a few days!

Well, after 3 months of trying, they'll wheel into the ED in afib w rvr and active hemorrhagic shock with a supratheraputic inr just like a lady I had last week. She tried the oils for a fungating breast mass. They didn't help. 🙁

I heard this a lot from 80 yr olds in rural south carolina. "it works for the door hinge so why not?" you can't argue with that logic

Not clear; she was taking warfarin for ****, but was also using the essential oils in leiu of "western" oncology?

I would have said, "perfect. I'll discharge you now so you can go see someone who can provide that care."

Coumadin for the afib. Oils for the breast mass she was pretending wasn't getting bigger. I'm often amazed with people cherry picking medical advice to follow

I have a cousin who earned two bachelor's degrees (excercise phys and nutrition or something similar.) He tells people his education is equivalent to doctorate-level but that he doesn't have a graduate degree because he was more concerned with actual learning rather than initials.

He sells essential oils for a living. Hard core anti-vaxxer and home birther.

I just vomited in my mouth a little...

Wind him up during the obligatory Thanksgiving/Christmas family hoedown and then come back here to tell us what happened

I second this.

One of my longest, dearest and most loyal friends and I are no longer talking because of this crap. His mother has glioblastoma multiforme and he's convinced that a) she will have a full recovery if he can just take over her care b) her doctors are idiots c) her nurses are evil. Further, he considers the fact that they recommend pain and anxiety meds to treat her pain and agitation is proof of b and c.

I went to visit her recently and she was in agony and nowhere close to the same person I knew growing up. My buddy referred to himself as her nurse (he does not have an RN) then explained to me that he should've gone to medical school, because all of the doctors he's met are idiots, so clearly he's fit for the job. He then told me of the book he was planning to write on how medicine should be practiced, based on the extensive notes he's taken throughout her illness. He's also intending to sue EVERYBODY. Our mutual friend is a lawyer and he told me that he was torn over the choice between refusing our pal's request for a referral to a law firm Vs subjecting any of his lawyer colleagues to the baseless rants of our bereaved buddy.

We basically can't talk anymore because he is so angry with the medical establishment that he gets stirred up into a rage whenever I give him a realistic answer to a question.

I miss him.

I'm a physician. My wife is a former vaccine biochemist (she worked for Merck; helped design assays for Rotateq, Gardasil - she's now a chef, but nm)

Her sister (my sister in-law).... hardcore anti-vaxxer, knows more than both of us put together about pediatrics, etc. etc. You just can't get thru to her. I haven't heard that she's on the oil bandwagon yet, but I won't be surprised if the wife walks in the door and says - "I heard from Stacie today. Guess what... ?"

Not EXACTLY the same type of patient...but cut from a similar cloth.

If you are a House of Cards fan, I think you'll enjoy the following...

You all need to quit your jobs and come join me in Canada. I am not sure if people up here are better educated about health, or simply lie to their physicians more effectively ... But as an example, you know how many unvaccinated peds patients I have seen here?

Zero.

All that time I spent charting BS ROS/ICD10 stuff I spend talking to my patients. The drug seeking population goes elsewhere. I see maybe 1-2 a week.

I no longer feel like a veternarian who specializes in the acute care of rabid mammals.

I would no sooner return to the practice of EM in the US as it exists today than I would go work in Zimbabwe.

We have a name for these ultra new age, mystical woo types in Paganism -- Fluffy Bunnies (general definition is one who refuses to learn, refuses to think, and refuses to consider the possibility they could ever be wrong).

Don't be fooled by their tree hugging, nature worshipping, love and light, the Goddess is alive and I fart glitter and unicorn rainbows exterior...

...because god forbid anyone should tell them they're wrong to eschew all western medicine to treat their 'holy bleep, why have you not sort proper medical attention' symptoms, in favour of finding the correct frequency of crystal vibrations to re-align their third chakra.

(Your average fluffy bunny after being told to put the crystals down and go see a Doctor)

I had a lady come in today with a history of a hiatal hernia. When it slides up and gets stuck she goes to her chiropractor who "pulls her stomach back down".
I did not know that was a thing, but... apparently it is.
When her hiatal hernia slid up today and her chiropractor couldn't pull the stomach back down, she came to the ED.

I'm eager to see what sort of treatment she pursues from this point forward for her acute cholecystitis secondary to the obstruction caused by her big intraabdominal malignancy.

Her stomach was where it was supposed to be though... so I guess there's that.

That really sucks, I'm sorry to hear that.

I have a friend like him... started with homeopathic remedies - most of which would only harm a pocketbook.... but then home births, then anti-vax (though her kids are partially vaxx'ed, same paperwork etc), then no vitamin k/eye drops/washing of the baby after delivery, then about 1 year ago she schooled me on the horrors of "medical kidnapping".

i was driving for a while so i just listened. i'd never heard of it. neither have any of my MD/DO/RN/app friends. if you google it, same crazy logic and mistrust of anyone with actual credentials.

I miss her, and her family. she has 4 kids, i'm not married w/ no kids and have my own BS going on, so we haven't talked in a long while. now nearly all of her friends are like-minded, so i can't even go see her with others.

we've been friends since 7th grade, so i do miss her 🙁

I'm lucky so far I haven't had any close friends lose the plot over western medicine to that degree. It frustrates me enough when some random person starts spouting that level of idiocy, I don't know how I'd react if a friend did it (especially because I'd find it incredibly difficult to just stand by and watch them causing harm to themselves or others).

Unfortunately with some people there's just no reasoning with them. This is an actual paraphrased conversation that happened on a Pagan and Wiccan discussion group several months back:

Child's Mother: "Hi, my three year old son keeps losing his balance and falling over, plus he seems to have some weakness in his legs. I'm sure there's a negative entity in our house that's targeting him, does anyone know a good banishing or cleansing spell?"

Group Majority: "Have you taken him to see a Doctor?"

Child's Mother: "No, he's under spiritual attack, a Doctor's not going to be able to help...*something about the 'entity' targeting him because blah blah blah psychic powers, my child is a super special snowflake, blah blah blah more BS*

Group Majority: "Well he could also just be a typical clumsy three year old, but the symptoms you're describing definitely warrant being checked out by a Doctor. Even if you don't think it will help what's the harm in at least taking him along for an appointment? It could be something serious, I wouldn't waste time doing banishing and cleansing spells. Doctor's, pronto!"

Child's Mother: "He doesn't need a Doctor, now is someone going to actually help me with what I asked for?!"

Group Majority: "OMFG, JUST TAKE HIM TO THE FREAKIN' DOCTOR'S ALREADY!!!"

Child's Mother: "Hmmph! I thought you guys were supposed to be Pagans!"

Group Majority: "We're Pagans, we're just not idiots."

*And cue the thread delete and flounce*

I had a patient that lived with norweigean scabies for about 6 months putting on essential oils before he broke down and came in. Now that is willpower (and denial)
