I wear dress shoes everyday for work; however, I wonder if my dress shoes are too casual... Most of my current dress shoes are either black or light brown - derby type; however, they are definitely used/worn. I am wondering if I should invest in a pair of brand new shoes for my upcoming interviews so they don't have the creases. or is it okay to just polish them up, save some $, and wear one of my current pairs to the interviews?

I am wearing a blue suit (not navy, not bright blue) but still conservative as recommended by Men's Wearhouse; I tried the same suit on in grey, black, and navy and the blue definitely looked the best as per 2 of the salespeople and my best friend.

I always go for the economical pick..polish up your shoes and wear them. Unless they look pitiful, i doubt anyone will notice, or if they notice i doubt they will care.

Creases are fine and generally begin showing immediately after wear, so if you purchase new ones they will have creases too. I would suggest brushing them off and maybe washing them with some saddle soap if they are dirty, then polishing and waxing. Also a new set of laces if the current ones are looking old.

If they're comfortable just polish and wear them. Don't make my mistake and buy cheap ones. Took a couple days of all day walking to break them in although now they're finally good. Almost gave up on them and ordered new ones (still might) but decided to give them one more shot and finally had a day where they didn't kill my feet.

I would stick to the black shoes, but give them a cleaning and polish. As long as they fit, and are fairly conservative, I think you should be fine.

Being a grown up professional means dishing out $600 for 2 pair of nice shoes and $600 for a nice suit.

Allen Edmonds
Mezlan
Bruno Magli

Buy one pair of black and one pair of brown. Laces, no slip on. Nordstrom semi-annual sale is a good time to pick them up.
Ditch the $50 square toed clunkers with rubber soles from rack room. Shoes are the #1 thing people will notice about your dress.

Like atomi, I recommend some Allen Edmonds. But you don’t have to go big money spending. The Park Avenue style is a classic and if you get a pair in black you can use that for every professional or formal occasion. I purchased a used pair in great condition on eBay for $83 after shipping and used those for my recent interview. Know your shoe size and be patient and you can find some awesome deals on used shoes.

Here’s a pic of them that I took post-interview. I polished them and waxed the cap toes the night before.

Nice shoes (and whatever they say about big feet, haha)...but I just have one question—why were you taking pictures of your shoes after the interview? 🙂

My gf wanted to see how shiny they were, lol. An interviewee complimented them at the lunch and I told her that gave me a slight confidence boost prior to my interview, haha.
