I am just now finding out about the DPMS program and would like to apply however it looks like there is rolling admissions(since alot of people have already been interviewd) and the deadline is May 14th. I live in Texas(but SO willing to relocate) and would like to know if it is a smart decision and realistic for me to apply as an out of state resident at the end of the application cycle?

Hey, if you meet the qualifications, send your application in! (Instead of waiting another year).
I would talk to Dr Walker...she will probably tell you to apply (cuz thats her job)
However I applied late last year (like late April/early may) and I got the interview(the last set) and was wait-listed because I "applied too late"...I don't think anyone has been accepted to the 2010 class yet though, I believe the 1st round of interviews are just coming up. Good Luck!

Hey, I interview that day but I fly into NJ to visit my friend in Princeton. I will drive to Philly on the 26, so we can do the 75 full or twins. Let me know if you've had anybody to pair with you.
Spacedoc...are u going to interview? I suck at verbal as english is my 4th...i speak six. I end up with great science scores, but with very poor verbals. Where are you in the process?

As far as the process, I'm unsure what you mean by that, but in regards to preparing for the interview, (opinion) just be confident, highlight your strengths, and show them your not socially awkward. Other than that you (we all) should be fine and successful 🙂

Also, speaking 6 languages is VERY impressive. You should get accepted based on that alone lol!

Is anyone going to be in Philly this coming weekend for the open house on the 18th and interview on the 20th. If your trying to split a room, message me. I'll be in Philly by Saturday morning April 17th.
I'm in DPMS right now and the current class is not doing bad at all. For the most part the majority of people are on track to matriculating so I'm not sure who is spreading incorrect info.
The summer portion of the prgram started for us on June 15th and ended approximately around the end of July. Can't remember the exact date but classes started on Aug 9th and we had about a week from when the summer session ended until regular classes started.
It doesn't matter what state you're from. You can apply until the deadline. Last year it was May 9th and interviews continued until May 20th. They have just started the first rounds of interviews this month and it doesn't matter when you interview because you won't find out until they have interviewed everyone. I interviewed last year on May 8th.
Just wanted to say good luck to everyone who got an interview and will be getting an interview. Just wanted to give a little piece of advice, "BE YOURSELF". That is one of the most important things. You have to be authentic. Also be confident and please make sure to ask a question when the interviewer ask if you have any. Even if you don't really have one. You'll most likely be interviewing with a professor, the Dean of the medical school or the director of admissions.
My interview was with the director of the PIL program at the med school (PIL is the independent group based learning) and so I asked him what he thought some of the characteristics of a good canidate for PIL was even though I could have cared less what his response was.
I'm not sure how many students they are accepting this year, last year it was 29, which was the most they have ever accepted. Just keep in mind that 300 people are all fighting for one of 30 spots, so do your best to standout positively.

Do you think its worth an applicants time to go to the open house?
If you live in Philly or are close to the area it would't hurt. The reason I went was because I was in the area and they waived the application fee for people that attended. If you have questions and haven't applied yet I would say go. If you live far away I don't think it's worth it.
I'm seriously considering not showing up for my interview. I know this is cheesy, but can someone who's already in the program make a pitch to us as to why its worth the time and money. A few of us have been debating this very point over PM and it seems with (persistant rumors that very few students do well, to classes are telecasted, to MCAT prep isn't good, to professors not being good) its a shaky program to get yourself involved in.

Well as a current DPMSer I think it's very worth it and if you were to ask the dpmsers who are forth years now and graduating or the dpmsers who are currently first or second yrs they would say the same thing. As with any program there are hiccups and things that can be changed and made better but the program is a great program and gives you the opportunity to see if you can really handle medical school and if it is truely what you want to do.
Again I don't know where people are getting the info that the classes aren't doing well because that is not true. I find it hard to believe that people who are interviewing and aren't even in the program would know what the ave gpa of our class is, when I don't even tknow that. We don't run around telling each other what our gpa is. Yes the medical school classes are simulcast and you have access to them on the internet. You still have access to ask the professors questions if you need to. Even some of the med school students didn't physically go to class because we can watch it online and are able to fastforward or rewind if you want to go over something. I don't see that as a bad thing, it actually makes things easier. As for the mcat prep I don't think it's the best in the world but you are provided with instructors, prep material and tutors so ultimately it's up to you to make the best of it. I don't know any school or program where all the professors are wonderful. There are some really great professors and then there are some who are not so great, but thats everywhere you go.
If you have a 3.5 or above and you have a great mcat score than of course this program is not for you. The reason that most people applied to this program is because they could not get into medical school and felt that maybe a little more work was needed. Personally I applied to dpms because I struggled with mcat and it is a guarentee admission if you fufill the requirements, there aren't many programs like that. Yes it is expensive, but if you really want to be a doctor and you've applied and haven't gotten in then it's worth it.
I think each individual needs to assess their own personal situation and see what is best for them, but please if you're not interested in the program don't waste your time or the programs time. There are alot of people that really want to take advantage of this opportunity and it's really unfair to take a spot from someone who really wants it if you don't really want it. I can also say this, if you don't go into this program really wanting it, you're not going to succeed. It is a very rigorous, stressful and intense program and it will defintely weed people out.
For clarification, I heard that the current class was doing poorly from a student in a different program who is in constant contact with the director and people in the office.
I interviewed today and a lot of my concerns were clarified. First, last year class had a 74% success rate! Also, this year's MCAT prep will be through the Princeton Review, which is nice. Other than that, the other contractual agreements are the same. Good luck guys!
Again I'll say it would be impossible for anyone other than Dr. Walker or Dr. Rodriguez to know how the class is doing in general. I'm sure Dr. Walker is not telling this student everyones grades. Not that I need to explain this to anyone, but we met with the Dean of the medical school who has all of our info and said that the class as a whole is doing extremely well and on tract to matriculating.
Just because someone in another program told you that the class isn't doing well doesn't mean it's the truth. We beat the med school ave on several test and the only other class we have with other students right now is anatomy. Out of the anatomy class alot of dpms students are doing much better then students in the other program. If you have a question as to how the class is doing and what are some of the concerns we have it would be better for you to ask one of us. We're very open and don't mind answering questions. However to say that the class is doing bad based on something that someone in another program told you is not factual and i'm sure if you are in our position next semester and working your butt off you wouldn't want anyone talking bad about your class especially when the info they have is incorrect.

I couldnt agree more with what NKB said: if you're coming in with this mindstate of "I'm unsure I want to be here," you need to do yourself, DPMS and the other applicants a favor and void your interview. With this mindset you have 0% chance of succeeding, seriously. I can find you a bajillion better ways to burn $24K on. Hate to be so abrasive and if this is not your mindstate then I apologize in advance for misinterpreting your words.
But there is a part of me that tells me that you dont understand the tremendous opportunity you're being considered for, Space. This is a early assurance program to a great allopathic medical school. Seriously, this is a once in a lifetime chance! It's like something out of some infomercial you'd see at 3:30am with the British guy saying "But wait, there's moarrr!!" It almost too good to be true but it is.

True and I just dont see why it is relevant considering the circumstances that have brung you to DPMS. This is your last shot at med school and whether you get that 3.0/23 is entirely up to you.

I might be giving away my internet anonymity here, but as I said today to the great group of kids I interviewed with, 'You could go to Havard and come out with NOTHING if you don't put in the work' ..Please take this to heart wherever you end up.

As far as interviews go, I believe so. Past students have reported several 'waves' of interviews and interview-requests. Ours on 4/20 was just the first of these.
As an FYI, other interview dates that I am currently aware of are 4/22, 4/26 and 4/27. We had 8 or so candidates on our day and Admin said they interview about 60 people for the 25 slots.
Acceptances and rejections on the other hand, come ONCE and in late May / early June ..or something like that.

The interviews are not bad at all. Just know yourself, your work and why you want to be a physician. The majority of the day is laid back as they try to sell u the school and the program, but the 30min of selling yourself can be negative if you're not confident about what you're getting yourself into.
The best way to prepare is to reflect on your experiences good & bad, qualities & weaknesses and long term goals before you get there!

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE....did I say practice? If you have enough time, try to do a mock interview before the real one and Barrons also has a good book out, it mainly focuses on the personal statement, but ch 6 and 7 are devoted to interview tips. I am a naturally fast talker so lately I've been talking to what to me seems like Napolean Dynamite so that I wont sound crazy during the interview lol.
BabyDoc, I am relieved to know it is only 30 minutes, that should fly by quickly. Was it toward the end of the day, and does it really end arnd 230 b/c I have a flight on the same day.
And lol @ sppacedoc, well if he didnt atleast another person now has the opportunity we all hope to obtain. 😀😛🙂
The advice you just got was, I think, spot on. You might also consider video-recording yourself doing a couple of mock-answers.
You can also try and arrange for a mock-interview with maybe a pre-med advisor, a Physician mentor or even a friend and get some feedback from them.
..They say a great interview answer has GREAT CONTENT and DELIVERED BRILIANTLY, so just work on yourself to get as close to that as you can.

WOW, my interviewer's interview technique totally threw me off. He said he read my file and LITERALLY only had 1 major question. The rest of the time, he wanted ME to ask HIM things. S-T-R-E-S-S-F-U-L! I spent so much time practicing and he did not even ask why I wanted to be a Dr. LOL, So I only hope that I still made a good impression, it made me feel as though he had already ruled me out or something 🙁

Did you submit everything, includingLORs, MCAT..? I actually gave them my application last thursday. So I just hope they will still look at it...
I sent that stuff ahead of time since I wasn't sure when I'd finish the app and it's all coming from the Westcoast. They said that they "keep a file" of the previous items received, but I wonder if they haven't been matched yet.
Would anyone suggest I ask them about it? A post card is supposedly sent back to me if anything is missing, but I haven't seen that either.
They look at all applications as long as they receive them (and all additional materials) by May 15th. You could definitely call to ask, but because Dr. Walker is hardly ever at her desk, u should press the option that says "if you have questions about MSP" I think option 1. This is the person that puts the applications together for Dr Walker who then reviews them and either sends a rejection email or forwards it to the committee for additional review. But you probably won't get the card, they do it by email now.

I remember when I talked to someone I'm the office and they said it is really beneficial to turn in ur app early...so they prob have your info but are winding thru candidates. But I would call to double check
Did they tell you this at your interview??? bc they told us it wouldn't be until the 1st or 2nd week of June.
