Drexel Med Class of 2014!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wonder when the 2010 match list will be posted, just out of curiosity.

I was looking at the 2009 list and was totally impressed. The internal medicine matches were at some phenomenal institutions. In case anyone didn't see it, here it is: http://www.drexelmed.edu/Home/Admissions/MDProgram/WhyDrexel/ResidencyPlacement.aspx

Ask and you will receive. I just checked and, sure enough, it's now posted. Here you go.

Thanks for the match list post, saqrfaraj,

I hate to see Drexel so far down on the page.

How's everyone doing? I have exactly three more weeks till graduation!

One poster, two papers, 2 exams and that is it. I plan on putting in as little work as possible.

Also, I have a really bad case of the f#*( its. Hope they go away before WE start.

The faster you accept the debt you're about to have the better you'll sleep at night. Drexel Med even made a NEJM article for having the highest average graduation debt out of all MD schools (go us!).

damn the one of the highest? thats crazy. wat year in drexel are u xanthomondo?

They do have a library, and according to this page their hours vary depending on the day. Technically the QL library isn't open 24 hours either, they lock down the books after midnight. You can go in there (or anywhere in the building) to study your own stuff around the clock, though.

I'm not sure if the same goes for Hahnemann, I've never used it. But I'm sure there's plenty of spots in the hospital you could study at.

Hey All,

Have any accepted students received any information in the mail from Drexel besides an acceptance and financial aid stuff? I'm just curious when we'll get information about health insurance and orientation...

Thank you!

All I know is that we are supposed to get stuff in the mail "later in the spring."

Also, who needs a roommate?! I have nothing against all of my wonderful future classmates, but I find it somewhat odd to just find a roommate online by picking a name off of a list. I've had some bad luck in the past with roommates.

So, how are you guys doing this?

Thanks so much for your reply! I was getting worried that I had missed something...

Good luck finding a roommate!

Sup man, I have no idea how I'm going to go about finding housing. I've been debating whether I should get a studio on my own vs. my own room with one or two roommates. It's tough to jump into a one year commitment with strangers...

Check out the link I posted on the previous page of this thread. It's a pretty good tool to find listings.

Yeah, I checked that out a while back. It was actually surprisingly helpful. I think finding an apartment/house in philly is relatively easy, it's just the finding a roommate part that I'm having trouble with.

We COULD have a pseudo-future classmate only-second-second look - for people interested in finding roommates - day.

Just an idea.

I think that's a great idea. And while I know it's short notice, I'm going to be in Philly this weekend to look at a few 3- and 4-bedroom houses in East Falls. I'm still looking for an additional housemate or two to fill the lease. All the properties I'm viewing have:

- Washer/Dryer
- Central Air
- Major Appliances
- Small yards / porches / patios
- <$700/mo rent

If you're interested in joining me for the tours, shoot me an e-mail (benco[put an at symbol here]thewhitehat.com). I've got most of them lined up for Saturday Morning starting at 10:00 AM. I'll also be bringing a digital camera and can share photos with anyone who can't make it.

I was wondering if there were any important dates that I needed to be aware of for Drexel. I know that everyone had to pay a $100 deposit to hold their place in class after they were accepted. However, I didn't see if any other deposits were necessary in the upcoming months and haven't received any additional information. I was wondering if there were any other dates where deposits were due to hold my place in class—I want to make sure I do not miss any of them. Thanks

I had called the admissions office about 3 weeks ago regarding this same question and they told me that something would be sent out "soon". I haven't received an additional packet with schedule and such yet, but I'm assuming it will all come after May 15th.

Haha. The search went pretty good today. A couple dilapidated ****boxes, but I think I've got tabs on a pretty sweet 3br, 1.2 miles from campus, $1750/mo. One of my potential roommates just dropped out, so interested parties oughta contact me with a quickness. Plenty of pictures for the visually-inclined.

In IFM are there any mandatory classes/discussions throughout the week? If so, when, how often and how long?

I've always been a webcast kinda guy

During first year there are quite a bit of mandatory things to do. The PNP (as described above in this thread) group discussions are all mandatory, and they occured just about every week. Also in the beginning biochemistry has "conferences" (which were a waste of time) in which "professionalism will be assessed by attendance" blah blah blah. There also were some mandatory lectures that were a COMPLETE waste of time - these will infuriate you the most. I'd say 1-2x per week something will pop up.

Gross labs weren't mandatory, but I'm not sure it'd be a good idea to skip them. Neuro lab, though, its not a good idea to go to them. They were the worst

The good news is that in second year there were a lot less mandatory events.

[FONT=PrimaSans BT,Verdana,sans-serif]Hey guys, I'm a first year (soon to be second) and I am living in a historic house in Germantown that has both a room and an in-law suite for rent. Alright guys,

I've started looking for apartments and was really, really impressed with the packard building, located right across the street from the hanneman shuttle stop.

It's pretty expensive, so a roommate would be ideal. Here's the website:www.reinholdresidential.com/packard/

Get at me as soon as you can if you're interested!!

I can speak from personal experience about the Packard building having lived here for just shy of a year. This building is an EXCELLENT building to live in. The location is great and there's a lot around this area. I'm willing to elaborate further if anyone has specific questions.

DREXEL MED facebook page is DEAD. Seems like people just joined and forgot about it. We need to be proactive if we wanna find a roommate/apartment. I see the pages of other schools and people communicate on a daily basis. :(What to do? What to do?

If I had a facebook I'd be tearing up that page! I just finished my last final and cannot wait to meet all of you.

Yeah we should plan to get drinks or something around Phila/surrounding suburbs. I'm also looking forward to meeting everyone :)

I'll be in Philly again, Saturday night and Sunday day, 5/22-23. Shoot me a message if anyone wants to meet up Sat. evening or for lunch on the 23rd.

So I actually got accepted to my state school Buffalo, but after deciding with my fiance, I decided the 20K difference wasn't enough to bear the cold. I liked what I saw of Philly except for the hellish traffic on Roosevelt. I am going this Saturday to look at some places and am getting pretty excited and anxious about attending!

I am set up to do PIL but might switch to IFM b/c I think I prefer the longer lecture scenario and it gives me more flexibility if I get really into any extra-curriculars available at the school like volunteering in clinics etc.

Can anyone tell me when Drexel med students usually get involved in research? I actually have no research background and would be very interested in getting involved...

I was told on my interview that there are not very many research positions and that the focus of the school was on patient care.

Most medical students get involved with research during the summer between MS1 and MS2. It's possible to get involved with something longer term, but it's very difficult to do while managing your classes.

Drexel offers a number of opportunities for research. Believe me, you'll get plenty of emails about different opportunities. All students are given the opportunity to present their research on campus on Discovery Day.

Also, remember, you're in Philadelphia and there are plenty of hospitals with research going on. Lots of students, myself included, got involved with external research projects at Penn, Temple, etc.

Research may not be the top focus, but there are no shortages of research positions if you take the time to look for them.

Eeh I'm not sure I agree with this.

The .pdf file we were sent last year with a total of all of the summer research fellowship positions is here: http://www.drexelmed.edu/Portals/0/BiomedicalGraduateStudies/FacultyProjects2010.pdf

Through my count, it appears that there were 26 positions (and approximately 5 were added at a later date). ~30 positions for a class of 250.

I tried going outside of the program to do (volunteer) research in the field that I'm interested in. After about 5-10 emails/phone calls/in person reminders (at interest group meetings) the person in charge of research completely ignored me/put me off. I went to the chair of the department and he (very nicely and prompty) forwarded me to the same lady. I was never able to get anything. Similar things happened to my friends in other departments as well (I won't post which ones here, if you're interested you can PM me)

I applied to an external program (for a pharmaceutical company) and a few internal ones. I made it to the second round of interviews for the external program, but I didn't get either. For the one (internal) position I applied for, I was 1 of 10 students who were lined up to interview (we were sent the schedule/times of everyone in email). I was the first person to go on the second day. While on the bus back to main campus we all received an email stating that they found their person and all future interviews were cancelled....so there is definitely politics playing a factor in whether or not you get research. The reason I got my interview is because the people in charge thought I was related to a head honcho of the school (it was the first thing they non-chalantly asked me while escorting me to the interview room).

After I realized I wasn't getting anything I sent approximately 25 emails out to random people - clinical, basic science, etc looking for pretty much anything. After about a month an ER doc offered to give me something to do, but after 2 weeks that ended up falling through too.

After the summer ended I met with a resident in the field I'm interested in and she agreed to take me under her wing. Unfortunately after a few months this ended up falling through too. I don't know if I just had bad luck or what. In undergrad I did research for 3 straight years and had some success. Here it has been a disaster, though.

That has just been my experience, though. Your results may differ.
