Drexel University DPMS Program 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just really wish that we would get an answer sooner than almost 2 months post interview. This waiting is awful 🙁

Back in April, we were actually told that they would give us an answer before MDW, but given the fact that there is actually an interview day taking place today, the possibility of that happening seems to be very slim 😡

Guys good luck! I withdrew today cause I was accepted into another program! Hope you guys hear good news soon!

My application was complete a few weeks before deadline and my stats are pretty competitive. 3.8+ and 28 MCAT. No chance of interview now huh? It seems very late in the process. I knew that applying "late" was detrimental, but I was before the deadline...I feel like at least I should be looked at. sigh...Today is a bad day : /

Yep, hang in there though. It might not be your application. If you're not an underrep. minority, they probably kept those applicants in a different stack but now we're out of luck.

I'm not URM, but I am disadvantaged. I wrote about my extreme financial situation throughout my life as well as non-academic family, etc. No chance?

I assume you're not URM? This saddens me because I applied to the program with the assumption that it's URM and disadvantaged... sigh

yeah i'm not URM. It saddened me as well. I wish they sent out updates sooner instead of this wait.

If I was you and the only thing wrong is my mcat. I would retake it and apply to med school this cycle.

Mcat scheduled next month. Just want to be in a program cause being out of school sucks. Thanks for info....im hoping to get an interview. Whens the last day?

I don't know your situation, but if I didn't need any more classes why would I waste money on a year's worth of tuition when I could be working and saving money for med school. The committee meets to extend acceptances on may 31st. I was told this is the last week of interviews, but they could also change their minds. Classes start june 18th though...

I thought about that and I feel like doing well at a smp could really boost my chances in terms getting in a top med school next year. I cant be out of school another year....worst experience ever. Also, taking med school classes will really help my grades in first year and hopefully step one. Expensive? Yeah...but i think its worth it.

This program would prevent you from applying to any school other than drexel. It's a signed contract to admit you into drexel. Maybe you're thinking of drexel's ims program.

Yes it can, but so can a 31 on your MCATs to erase your average grades in undergrad (if thats the case). If you really want to go back to school that bad, there are other programs such as Masters that will not only grant you a degree to make you more marketable for employment while you get into med school but can also boost your grades and even allow you to take classes with medical students as part of your curriculum. It just depends how you choose to go about it. There is always more then one way to look at a situation and go about changing it...

The thing is... I have an excellent application minus 28 mcat. Im applying to another smp that is degree granting. I do have my mcat scheduled for next month. Depending on how i do....i guess that will ultimately determine my decision. Im pretty confident ill get a sufficient score though. Overall though, i would lve to do the dpms and go to drexel med.

Does anyone know how the summer program works?
I know its a 1 credit class. Anyone know the schedule for it?

So the summer 1 credit class is intense. Forget about your summer basically-- cold hard truth. 🙁
But...think what you WILL gain from it-- 1) you are in the dpms program & NOW is the chance to prove yourself 2) It will give you a really great edge and preparation for the beginning of the true academic year 3) a slew of other positives like knowing some really cool classmates & bond formation as strong as purines go with pyrimidines (corny joke...sorry)

So, the gist of the summer program. You will do (all medical courses mind you) biochemistry, physio, & pharm. Those are the 3 main ones. On top of that you will get study/learning tips. Schedule is daily morning (8am-3/4pm) It's rigorous, but well worth it.

Want to know more then message me!!

Has anyone who hasn't received an interview invite heard anything or have an app update yet? Should we assume rejection at this point?
Don't assume rejection just yet. The program is fairly notorious for late acceptances/final reviews of the application. Mid june is still a few weeks away and believe it or not...people have been told of their acceptance 2 days before the beginning of the program.

That being said... good luck to everyone. I've been away but I'm back to answer any Qs as a prev dpmser 🙂

Regarding schedules: the dpms summer schedule you will get on orientation day & is based on generally 2 days worth of lectures from a biochem/physio/pharm from the med school year. YOu can see that schedule when you get your drexel ids/email.
It's a lot of material you will be covering and it moves fast. Starts deceptively easy and then moves really quick. It's really a different form of thought process. Your classes are held in NCB (hahneman hospital 4th floor typically) & not the med school. You'll get your IDs, library intro w/ resources (use them), shuttle schedule, student resource center for free tutoring (use them- previous dpmsers & med students), & intro to the faculty/administration who you will be dealing with. PM if you have Qs or concerns.
Good luck everyone!!

It is safe to assume that they are not looking to interview any more for the DPMS program? Should I bother calling them tomorrow? Don't really want to apply to medical school again 🙁

As per the interview invite email, May 23 was the last interview date, however, it will not hurt to call. Also, from what I was told on the interview day, the admission committee meets this week and acceptances will be sent out by the end of the week.

Hello Everyone, I'm new to the thread and anxiously awaiting the email on Friday. Just wanted to say good luck to everyone waiting for an acceptance! 🙂:xf:

Are you certain about this friday for acceptances? I called yesterday and was told anytime in the next two weeks.

At the interview Dr. Walker said the committee would be meeting May 31st and decisions would go out on June 1st.

Not everyone will accept the offer so I
Imagine you could potentially hear in the next 2 weeks if you are "wait listed." On my interview day they told me by MDW but I was interviewed at one of the early dates. Classes start June 18th so I would hope they tell us sooner than later....

Anyone else freaking out about how much tuition is at Drexel? They made the top ten list for most debt for students... Yikes!

I think I saw it at #1 most expensive school in the us. I too am freaking out about 5 years worth of ridic loans... :/

Yeah the cost is through the roof. Tuition for the DPMS year is 22K and 46k for the med school years. The military scholarship is looking pretty good right about now!

Yea and there are other loan packages available for people who want to be in the public health sector, primary care, or even research. A lot of people don't know about them, but they are out there. I guess planning ahead and applying is the key (this is only for med school of course)

In the past DPMSers have received scholarships for doing really well in the program. That's what some of the previous DPMSers were saying at the interview.

Anyone hear yet? My heart starts pounding every time I get an email haha. Smh

Not Yet. I hope most of the interviewees are on SDN, so we'll know when acceptances are sent out.

It's getting late. Will Friday come and go without a notification??

I called the admissions office and they told me the committee met yesterday and that decisions should be coming out relatively soon. Hopefully soon means today.:xf:
