Hi everyone,

Here is my question. Which of the following would you choose if you had the choice? Drexel doing the PIL program, NYMC or Downstate.

I really got a great vibe at both Drexel and NYMC. The students, faculty, and atmosphere were great.

I really liked the facilities at NYMC and the campus feel and the fact that it is close to NYC and that you can do your clinical years there as well. It also seems like they have a pretty amazing match.

At Drexel, I really loved the PIL program and felt that the students were all very chill. I also feel that they have a great match, as well.

At Downstate I was pretty much unimpressed with the facilities and it felt that the student body was not very together. However, I did like the fact that it is in NYC and that I can have in state tuition there and save tons of money.

Can you all give me some feedback on what you think and what you would do?

Thanks

I personally chose downstate, I was accepted to drexel and was offered an interview at NYMC and declined both. But from what you said, it really seems like it's between drexel and nymc for you, you dont' really seem to like downstate. I chose downstate because I wanted to be in NYC and close to home, and their clinical experience is amazing. they also have a really good match, espeically in ny (if that's where you want to be for residency) because the ny residency directors know that downstate students are well prepared. if money's a big issue then you'll probably want to go to downstate, otherwise you can still be near nyc with nymc, plus its facilities are nice. there are also many other threads discussing these schools if you do a search. good luck.

I declined interviews at Drexel and NYMC after my downstate acceptance. Since I'm from Queens, it was a no brainer for me. Cheaper tuition, great clinical and being close to home.

Yeah, I think money's big. I would consider not going to Case if I get into downstate. But if you hated it, you'll hate it, and I don't think it'll be worth it. I mean, you have to be ok w/ run-down facilities, disorganization, and state bureaucracy. Not everyone can work within a county hospital system; it's definitely the harder road.

I'm more concerned about what seemed to be a lack of class unity. How bif of a deal do you all think that is? I want to go somewhere where everyone is happy/excited to be there and also a place where I can make some really good friends.

You'll make good friends anywhere, that shouldn't really be an issue. Downstate seems to have "less unity," but mostly because about 50% live on campus and 50% commute. But everyone is still together all day and everyone seemed pretty happy when I was there.

in-state tuition for the win

personally, i would not hold out hope if you have not heard back from the places you interviewed at (downstate and nymc)... they are both very competitive and especially if an interview (downstate) didnt go well, you should reconsider your options...

some might even suggest seriously considering if medical school is right for you

Some people seriously lack SDN etiquette (mi2squared)

Seriously.

To the OP: if you haven't heard from NYMC yet don't lose hope. The big challenge is getting an interview, and you did that!

Hope to see you here next year!

Don't do Drexel. I'll be an MSII in PIL, and I don't want a huge 1st year class ruining our awesomeness. Try a traditional program like the rest of the drones.
