I was watching an episode of Grey's Anatomy and one of the situations got me thinking. The anesthesiologist had been drinking on the job and had fallen asleep during a surgical case. I don't drink, so I'm wondering how something like that could effect one's dental practice (I know that all of us are smarter than to try something like that, but hypothetically.) Since none of us are dentists yet, my question for you is if you think that drinking can play a role in one's pre-dental academic performance?

It's all about wise decisions...3 examples,
A friend who started med school last week drank his liver out every weekend in undergrad but managed a 3.9 and a high MCAT (don't knw the exact score but it was up there).
Another friend would occasinally drink his liver out big time and rarely go to class yet managed a 24AA on the DAT and goes to a top dental school
Another kid I know from undergrad never consumed an alcoholic beverage/ didn't party complete bookworm type and finished a 3+4 year accelerated undergrad (3 years undergrad + 4 years med school), in 2 years, completing all his pre-med requirements in 2 years, getting a killer score in his MCAT and from what I heard, recently, killed his first round of board exams.

So, there really is no correlation between drinking and performance in these cases, it it more about the time you put into getting what has to be done academically, and doing it well, if you ration your time wisely, its possible....

Based on how students at Penn drink, I think there may be a positive correlation between drinking and doing well in dental school.

I think doing anything in moderation including drinking wouldn't be detrimental to one's academic performance. Dental school is really stressful but you need to make time to relax and get away from it all. For some, drinking is an excellent way to relax, for some its not.

Definately not. I have a friend who went to see a baseball game and sat next to some people who work at a hospital in surgery (CRNAs, etc) and they were getting totally trashed. They told my friend that they would be at work the next morning despite all that. Its a pretty scary thing if you ask me.

I'd be concerned about drinking socially (including getting trashed with friends) vs. drinking to take away the stress of the day (venturing into alcoholism). There were a few days 2nd year that I was coming home thinking, "please give me something to take away the pain...anything." Add to this the other wonderful anxiolytics we use: N2O, benzos, opiates...and you've got a very precarious situation for some folks.

I work out my biceps many nights doing the 12oz curl. Mark Twain said, "Too much of anything is too much....but too much whiskey is just right."

only people that don't drink in dental school are those really really antisocial people and the weird old people who are married.

I guess I better start drinking a bit then... 🙄

Well I don't know. I don't drink and I'm not antisocial in the least. Maybe drinking makes people who are otherwise antisocial more social. Just a thought.

come talk to me when you start. You'll see what I mean. In the meantime theorize, conjecture however you want, but you'll be wrong.

As far as I can tell, the only people drinking in dental school are the weird young people who aren't married.

That is pretty weird to be young, unmarried, and drink a little... 🙄

Maybe they just don't drink because alcohol isn't good for your health?
