got my ochem midterm grade back - flunked it.

I'd have to make a 100 on the final to get an A

& at least a 83 on the final to make a B. Anything lower than that risks a C or F.

Also, any tips on how to do well in it? What did you do to Ace organic chemistry?

Seems like it was all cake until the exam questions.

I'm sitting on these grades:

First Year

Calc: A+
Computer Science: A
Bio I: B
Physics I: B
Chem I: B

Lin Alg: A
Computer Science: A+
Bio II: B
Physics II: B
Chem II: C
Statistics: A

Go to Amazon.com, get Klein's Organic Chemistry As A Second Language. Get both volumes: First Semester Topics and Second Semester Topics. That should save you.

I'm leaning towards you dropping and retaking it. You have a decent amount of Bs and a C. You should shoot for at least a 3.5GPA. I know people can get accepted with lower GPAs but the higher the better obviously.

I also think you can retake it and get an A if you put in the work. Definitely work a bunch of practice problems either from the assigned book and/or the second language book suggested above.

If you failed the midterm swinging an 83% or higher on the final isn't going to be easy.

Thanks - wanted to ask, when is a good time to attack practice problems for Orgo? Is it a routine that should occur after lecture? or

I remember meeting up with some class mates or just going solo to a local panera bread on the weekends. I would pretty much order a sandwich with a drink and work through the end of the chapter problems for 5-6 hours straight. I also was pretty big into flash cards which aren't for everyone.

I did well in O-Chem because I spent an insane amount of time making sure my lab work was pristine, my homework assignments were thoroughly done, and that by the end of each week I felt confident about the material that was covered. I don't really know if their was a hard routine I followed.. I would just make to-do lists every other day on which topics I had to cover/review and tried to stay on top of everything.

I entered O-chem with the perception it would be the toughest class I will ever face while in undergrad and pretty much was scared straight into studying like a maniac. In the long run I wouldn't say it was any harder than calculus based Electricity and Magnetism or Biochemistry. If you have a good instructor then the only limit is your worth ethic.

Like you, I failed (F) on the Organic Chemistry I midterm.

Unlike you, I did not look for help. In fact, I flunked the Final and got an F. That 3 credit F tanked my science and overall GPAs by 0.1 points.

Be honest with yourself. How much did you really learn pre-midterm? Are you confident you can master pre-midterm material while learning current material? It's difficult, but not impossible. That confidence, or lack thereof, should help you decide to continue or drop.

Your study habit is key. My Orgo professor (he taught for 40+ years) says, "Spend at least one hour everyday on learning Organic Chemistry."

A C won't hurt you, an F means you retake because it's a pre-req. Find a tutor.

Some schools have tutors or LA's look into that. Khan academy helps too. They have videos on reactions and mechanisms that are free!! Something that worked for me was to do all the end of the chapter homework questions three/two times before each exam! They cover a wide range of concepts

The key is practice!! Orgo isn't hard ppl get intimidated and have it in their head they will fail. The more you practice the more you will understand the reactions!! I did that for orgo 1&2 got an A. Trust me it isn't hard! Be confident and take the time out to practice!!!

Isn't it late in the semester to still be able to drop a class? I would say that a B followed by an A in Orgo II looks better than a W.
