dropout rate
Started by DOc2Beeee
that is a bit high, since most claim to be under 5%. One year also means nothing because most that drop out tend to leave for reason other than academics. Schools do a lot to keep you in.
I heard the numbers are quite suprising with a lot of schools, i dont wanna piss anyone off with names. But i know some schools that have a high drop out rate, where the class might start around 300 and only manages to graduate like 225 may be. So hey the numbers are always confidential, no one wants to disclose their drop out rate!!

Don't be passive agressive...It is pretty clear what school you are talking about, as it is the only school (MD and DO) with that large of a class...My understanding is that the statistics you state are more rumor than truth...not to mention that they have a great match list and a very good rep among area physicians. If you have the stats please share...or is it just another SDN rumor???

Unless a dropout rate was somewhere around 50%, I really wouldn't worry about it. Instead, I would be more concerned about doing everything you can to pass. Utilize your resources, including the numerous ones that any decent medical school should provide you, and you will do just fine.
Med School isn't rocket science, it's plain and simple hard work. That being said, it's back to studying for Micro.

Listen man if you know wat school iam talking about and you are ready to defend your opinion on me being wrong go ahead! I will tell you this...it's not a rumor and i have heard this from students who go to these schools from the past years. So basically go do your homework instead of calling me out..second, i dont wanna start a debate over which school's better coz of a lower drop out rate. In all honesty, i care less about drop out rates..medical school is a privilige, i wont judge!

1. I am not a man, and I am not sure why your post is so harsh...I wasn't trying to start a fight
2.I took exception to the way you worded your post and that you didn't cite any sources . It is a bit passive agressive to make a statement about how you don't want to name names and then basically make it clear what school you were talking about. I am actually interested in the truth thats all...
3. I did a search on SDN and google and the largest number I found was 10% drop out rate which is 30 not 75 people in a class (25%)...If that is the number that people in school are quoting...have they given any reasons why students are having such a hard time?
I am sorry if you interpreted my post as an attack...that wasn't my intention
The majority of drop outs are for personal, not academic reasons (i.e. family, financial, social, etc.). The problem with drop out rate statistics, no matter what the figures are for any given school, is you cannot tell the reason why the people dropped out. If you had 10 medical schools, 9 have 5% and 1 has 10% dropout rate, it does not mean that school is bad. Remember this when your deciding on which school to attend and not attend.

Actually, things you have heard from students is exactly the definition of what a rumor is. There is no evidence in hearsay. However, the latest attrition figures from ALL osteopathic colleges from the AOA shows the biggest drop is in the first year at 4.3%. The average of all osteopathic colleges over 4 years is only 10.7%. Keep in mind, though, that these are not all people who failed out. There are quite a few reasons why people may leave med school or take a leave of absence. If you would like to look up the year-by-year rate, you can:

We lost 5 of 163 people after the first semester this year. One is going to an MD school next year, and I don't know about the others. I have two people in my class this year who started last year, but had to start again because of medical problems. Most schools really do try to keep you in once you get there.

anyone know pcom's dropout #?
For those of you there, do they really help students out who are struggling? What is their policy on failing a course? For instance, do you make it up in the summer?
its complicated. My class has the exact same number of people as we did last year, but we gained people who are in a five year program (they started a year ahead of us, we also lost people because they joined a five year program). Off hand i would say its less than 5%. Many were for non academic reasons.
As for repeating a class, If you fail one of the non-system classes you can try to make it up during the summer. It isn't easy. If you fail two classes you have to repeat the year. I don't know what happens with the system classes, but you have to really try not to pass those (not that their easy, just straightforward).

Excellent! Thanks for the info!

Well, I would say there's definitely something about that 10th school I would want to know if 5% more students leave there than 9 other places. IMO, that is a red flag.

I think that it would only truly be a "red flag" if that school consistently had twice as many dropouts as every other medical school every single year (roughly). You really shouldn't read too much into a single year.
