I'm currently a senior, well on the road to raising my GPA from a 3.1 (sophmore) to a 3.55 (graduate).

However, I feel like I bit off more than I can chew this semester. I enrolled in several difficult Biology Courses, and also an Intro to Astronomy class on the side (21 credits)- I've always been interested in it, but it is not Easy.

But right now, I'm feeling very swamped with Research, MCATs, and all of my classes.

I was wondering, how bad would a W be for me if I dropped the astronomy class??
Please consider that I'm trying to show Medical schools my GPA incline.

I think it will look worse if you get four or five C's than three or four B's and A's and one W. Is it early enough that it won't even show up as a W?

As long as you have less than 3 Ws you are fine.

I have a bunch of Ws. A W doesn't compromise your chance to get into medicine school as much as a bad grade does. It's not a big deal. One W is nothing.

Drop it and never look back.

The fear of the W is the great SDN urban legend.

I got a bunch of them and nobody cares...got 6 interviews, and at the 2 I have attended it is not an issue.

W is always better than a C or D or F. The adcoms know that you are buffering your GPA when you do this. Whether they know or not, they would probably agree that as long as you aren't going crazy with the drops, it always looks better to have a W.

what about dropping a class during the semester you are applying? Balancing interviews/coursework is tricky, and I'd like to leave that option open. They wouldn't view it as weaksauce and rescind potential admissions would they?

If you are already verfied they wouldnt even see the W until after they accepted you. No worries. 😀

3-4 W's on my transcript. no problems with interviews or acceptances.

Man, I have like 10 Ws. Justified, but still... it's pretty crazy! 🙄 I have 5 interviews thus far.

Don't mean to steal your thread away but I don't want to make a new thread either. Hope you don't mind.

I'm thinking about withdrawing from orgo I. If I drop it then I will end up with only 11 credits this semester. How bad does that look? Especially with such a cliche withdraw.. I'm sure adcoms see tons of W's by Orgo I.

It doesn't look that good. It may signal your inability to handle a full-time, science-heavy, workload. 11 credits is part-time and the average workload in med school is anywhere from 30 - 45 credits/semester. If you can, add some more classes to your schedule. If you apply to Downstate, they will definitely be asking you about that.

Won't be a huge deal, just gotta make an A in I and II to make up for it. Is there no possibility of dropping another class? You bomb the first test or something?
