Well, I am a non trad who is graduating in August from undergrad. I have a lag year coming up, and I am attending the post bacc at LECOM this fall as a sort of back up since I am done with school and my grades, while decent, are not great. I am also applying to med schools schools this year. My applications are not too bad, and I think I have a good shot at getting accepted. Now, LECOM's program i am sure will provide great prep for MSI. However, I have worked full time and accumulated a huge debt putting myslef through undergrad (poor family, first to go to college, blah, blah, blah). LECOM's program is 2 semesters at $6,000 each, and worse yet, my wife will be 4 hours away while I am there and we will have to commute to see eachother on weekends 🙁 . Now, I doubt I will get an acceptance before classes start in September. However, Should I have the good fortune of being interviewed and accepted to med school this fall, I was considering dropping out of the program, saving the second $6,000, moving back with the wife, and working to pay off some credit card debt before I start MSI. You guys see any problem with that plan?

Here's my scenario and thinking:

I did a master's program last year (1 year program-August to May). I was accepted at the beginning of December to a school with no strings attached...meaning I didn't have to complete my master's program. However, it wasn't my top choice school, so I wound up getting badly in debt and got a cool Master's Degree to boot.

However the other schools I interviewed at my Master's degree completion was required. I could have settle for the original school but figured why not and besides I spent all this money working for a masters plus moving expenses, living expenses and it would have been impossible to get out of my lease without a HUGE penalty. So I did finish it. I'm in debt, big deal, I'll add it onto my med school debt and go on with life.

I say to you, if accepted early, you better call the school and find out as each school is to their own.

I did not even list the program on my AMCAS or AACOMAS, so as far as the schools I applied to, they don't know unless I mention it, so that will not be an issue. i think one of my recommenders may have mentioned that i was considering doing some post bacc, but beyond that, i did not list it at all.

You are required to send ALL transcripts from EVERY school you attended. You might have some explaining to do.

...i know a girl who was in lecom's post-bac program last year, got accepted to another med school in november, and dropped out of the program at the end of the first semester... her school did not care if she finished the program or not... the only problem you would have with dropping out early is if the school you get into needs your post bac grades... also if you get into lecom and want to go to lecom, then you'll have to finish out the post-bac program....

yeah I'm gonna tell. Good grief. It's an honest answer. Besides in could constitute as lying on the application and thus removal from medical school (although I doubt it would happen).

I think you've covered all grounds - the post-bac is a safe bet and if your doing well, you might want to send a first semester transcript to the med schools you have applied to (sort of a hey look I'm doing well and REALLY want to go to your school type of thing) - I can't hurt.

I wouldn;t worry about bailing on the post-bacc - in fact, most schools WANT you to do that - they then boast you as a statistic (90% of all student who have enrolled in LECOM's post-bacc have been accepted blah blah blah.)

Keep us posted.
