hey, i'm gonna be doing research as a full-time job under a grant with a medical school in my area for the next 6 months before starting school in the fall.. I'll be working directly with the PI and other researchers, but the employment goes through the university system.
I was just wondering if ALL employers conduct blood/drug tests, and what exactly are they looking for. I did research for a different school 2 years ago, but no test was ever conducted.

I'm not sure if it's a universal thing or not, but for what it's worth I do research at Mayo Clinic in association with Mayo Medical School and I had to have drug testing done also. Not sure what they are looking for specifically, I know cocaine and marijuana are definites.

I think you'll be fine. I doubt they'll check anything. I worked at 2 academic hospitals and they didn't test anything.
What they look for depends on the position and the institution. Places that look usually test for the NIDA-5: cannabanoids (weed and hash), coke, opiates, PCP, and amphetamines. Depending on the employer, they may also look for quaaludes, barbiturates, MDMA, LSD, Psilocybins (shrooms), and all those other fun drugs.
Have fun.

Depends on the University. If its tied to the state, it will undergo state regulations regarding drug testing....if not, then its up to its own prerogative.

You beautiful mother Fu*kers....both you and Cozmosis??? Congrats to both.

If you guys were close to me, i'd roll a special smoking treatment for both of you

I've had. . . uhm. . . 5 jobs in my life and 2 research "positions" that were unpaid. No drug tests ever! I am thankful.

I work for a school of medicine and do research. I was indeed given a drug test. However, the description of the job should tell you if a drug test is required. :luck:

Drug tests are a completely idiotic waste of money (and, no, I really am clean), but lots of companies do them. I'd say your odds are about 50/50. From my understanding, your biggest worry needs to be marijuana because it stays in your system for a while. Drink a ton of water and hope that you're not fat because it stays in your fat cells. Start laying off the stuff now, and don't do it again until you take the drug test if it's needed. By all means, though, feel free to have fun after you take the test. 🙂

Also certain psychoactive drugs are detectable in spinal fluid for an obscene amount of time, but I highly doubt anyone but the CIA will subject you to an LP just to get a job.

Most of these are synthetic drugs (most notably LSD).

I work for a big hospital and they drug test all new employees. They should tell you when you interview, but either way if you really want the position I would stop now. It's not worth the stress worrying about not passing.

I'm talking about marijuana, of course. You can keep doing all the coke, meth, heroin, benzos and PCP that you want until a few days before the test. 🙄 And you can pretty much show up drunk too.

amphetamines
are also available by prescription. I wonder how a hospital / employer would handle this?

Now is a good time to give up the drugs. Otherwise, at some point, you'll get caught and your medical career will be over.

Here are some thoughts:
1) If you have a drug conviction, med schools will not accept you.
2) If convicted during med school, you'll be thrown out.
3) Fed law denies students loans to those with drug convictions (not sure of the severity). So, unless your parents have $240,000 to give you, a drug conviction will keep you out of med school even if you're accepted. Med schools do not garauntee that you'll find loans, so in this case, you'd be screwed.

I think I have the above info correct, but I could be a bit off.

As someone who takes prescription amphetamines (Ritalin), if you put it down as a prescribed medication it pretty much clears up why you came out positive. I've probably lit the test for them up at every job I've ever had and I've never even been asked for proof of them being prescribed. Basically it works the same for all of the other drugs over abuse that are available by prescription- narcotic analgesics, benzodiazepine sedative/anxiolytic/anticonvulsants, barbiturates, etc.
