I got a D (1.0) and a C in general bio I and II.
I got a C (2.0) in general chem II
I got a C (2.0) in organic chemistry I
I for a BC (2.5) in physics I

Should I retake all those..??

you must retake the class you got a D in, but all the rest you do not have to retake. what you must focus on is finding a new strategy to studying for your exam so that you may do better. It is more beneficial to take upper level biology courses than to retake a class you received a C in, because I believe that if you retake that both grades will be averaged into AADSAS( i am not positive about this though).

General rule is, schools like to see pre-reqs be taken with a grade of C or higher (so C- and lower = retake)

I would not consider dental school, if i were you. i would freak out if i had those.. pa or nursing seems more possible..

Don't listen to people telling you to quit...Re-take the D class, and take more sciences earning A's if possible. Keep going, try new study strategies (everyday studying, use a recorder, consult sources other than the textbook), and most importantly DON'T GIVE UP ON DENTISTRY!! Good luck!

PA programs are pretty competitive these days, applicants w/ D's and C's are not admitted to PA schools frequently. Nursing is a great suggestion though, it's not really competitive and you do make a lot of $$ for the amount of schooling necessary.

PA have borderline 3.0 but more than make up for it with a lot of direct patient contact. It's just the number of seats per class that makes it competitive.

this is unrelated to OP's question. He wants to know if he should retake a couple of courses, not switch career paths.

Funny. Yea, I wouldn't listen to people saying change career paths. Change your study habits and get focused. Make sure that you Ace the rest of the classes you take. Its not over. Dental schools like to see at least a year or so of science courses with good grades. But I wont lie to you, it will be hard. Depending on your gpa you might want to look into a postbac program 👍.

That is definitely the general rule. Try to take some upper diivison Bio related courses. My friend had a horrible lower div science gpa like you but buckled down the last two years getting nearly a 4.0 in all the upper division bio related stuff. He still got accepted. I am sure the dental schools where thinking if he could get an A in the harder upper div stuff maybe he just wasn't in the right mind set earlier in his academic career.

I was in a similar situation as you.
At my school anything lower than a C in your major's requirement classes you must retake.
Therefore I had to retake two classes (had two D's)
Retook one for a B.
Eventually I gotta retake my other class.
I also got a C in one class, not planning on retaking that.

Basically, retake the D, pull B+ or higher in everything else.

Also, anyone here saying "change career path" you can scroll to the next post. Just because you have 1-2 bad semesters doesnt mean you cant recover. Is it that mcuh harder? Yes it is. Can it be done? Yes.

Also, im assuming since you are taking/took organic, that you are at least a sophmore. If you are a sophmore, you arent in too bad of shape. If your a junior your going to need 4.0s

Nursing school is not competitive? Really? If you want to pay a premium for private school, maybe. If you want a cheap state school it is very competitive. Prereqs for most require B's and above, shadowing, letters, etc. There are not enough public school seats because there are not enough professors. Supply and demand will push more nurses out of the hospitals and into the classrooms.

To sum this up:
Nothing that is under the category of Pre Health is easy to get into.

And its true.

Seriously? you've got to be kidding, show me some statistics from an established source that prove how nursing is competitive. And not from "Columbia Nursing School" or "UCSF School of Nursing"...aggregate data, I seriously took a look to see if you were right, but it just confirmed my belief that becoming a nurse is extremely easy. Being a nurse is obviously not.

If you have any published data to show how nursing is competitive in the context of health care professions, I'd really like to see it (seriously).

Do nursing schools have a consistent list of prerequisites: No
Does each different degree given to nurses have a consistent list of prerequisites: No
(dent/med/pod/pa/op at least have a set of guidelines for admission)
Do nursing schools have entrance exams: No
Can you become a nurse with only a high school degree (or equivalent): Yes

For my bet, any profession where you get your degree online is not "competitive."

It's really not, have you looked at Caribbean medical school statistics?

but this thread isn't really about that...I think the OP has his/her answer and knows what to do

Seriously? you've got to be kidding, show me some statistics from an established source that prove how nursing is competitive.

If more than X number of people are seeking X number of seats in a nursing program, you have a competitive environment. There are enough candidates that many nursing schools have wait lists (google: nursing school wait list). Classic example of competition.

know clearly that in CA nursing school is more highly impacted than McDonald's at lunch time.

as the person above me said, go to allnurses.com its a nurses version of this site. I was going to go into nursing, but its too competitive and for the amount of money you get, its not worth the time, some people sit on waitlists for 3 or 4 years before they get in...

nah, you can still do it. There are always options. I just got done with a masters in public health and got my gpa up, and I also have been working in a virology lab for almost 2 years. retaking the dat in a few months. I will get in to dental school.

allnurses.com ≠ data. The websites I presented clearly show that obtaining a degree in nursing is relatively easy and does not require much academic ability. You have not provided any information that would lead me to the conclusion that nursing is competitive, in fact you have shown me even further how uncompetitive it is.

Show me some actual data to support your claim.

It is easy to become the President of the United States. All you have to do is be native born, a U.S. citizen, 35 years old, and have lived in the U.S. for more than 14 years. No credit check, GPA requirements, no DAT, not even a H.S. diploma or GED! You pretty much just need a pulse.

"It is easy to become the President of the United States". That would be a ridiculous statement, agree? Requirements are low, yet there are tens of thousands that want this one job that normally only comes available once every four years.

In much the same way, there are many more applicants to nursing programs than there are seats. This is why private career colleges have stepped in to take advantage of the situation. These schools have reputations ranging from respectable to deplorable. This is where some people get the impression that it is "easy to become a nurse". State schools and private colleges, on the other hand, have much higher standards for selection. The reason I don't bother to discuss disreputable private colleges is because I have yet to meet one (a nurse) working in a hospital. Most nurses I know are happy to tell you where they went to school, and many wear pins to indicate where they attended.

I don't know of any peer reviewed articles addressing "how easy it is to become a nurse". I have all the evidence that I need. I have drawn my conclusions from conversations with my wife, Mother, peers, friends, and general conversations with other healthcare professionals. In the 1960's and 1970's it was "easy" for my Mother to become a nurse. She just showed up at the hospital and enrolled. In 2011 this is not the case.

I cede the field to you, sir. My lazy argument will not hold water and I admit defeat. 👍

RN programs around where i'm at are pretty rough... you need a 3.8 + in about 40 credits of prereqs and CNA experience. They also conduct interviews. Also some schools have high GPA cut offs then do lotto because there are so any applicants. I dont think it is accurate to depict nursing as not competitive.

Also in a down recession, after someone is laid off do you think people are more apt to saying "I want a stable job - I'll finish off that BS/BA degree then go get my dental degree - or rather - i'll complete 3/4 terms of prereqs and get my RN to make 30/hr."

Because of the lower bar for entry and relitively high pay I think it is an option MANY people are seeking and therefore pretty competitive. At least in my area.

It's not hard to become president of the US...just get C's in all your classes, snort cocaine, start some unsuccessful businesses, own a baseball team and you're a shoo in...oh yeah and having a former president as your dad helps too
