I have a question for all you neurotic premeds out there. 🙂

Here is my story. I was a mechanical engineering major at a top 10 program for my first two years of undergrad. I was a middle-of-the-road student for engineering (3.0), but had zero motivation and no idea what I wanted to do with my life. After my sophomore year I decided, after shadowing a physician, that I wanted to study medicine. I switched into biology and have had 2 years of straight As (counting one and a half summers too) since. Overall I have brought my GPA up from a 3.0 to a 3.54. While I know my cumm. GPA is not great for medicine, I think my jump in grades should look good (they do consider trends...right?). Moving on. I recently found out that I am really close to a biomedical engineering degree. In fact, only three upper division engineering classes away. I was going to try to graduate with both degrees in December, but it is no longer a viable option. I have already been an undergrad for four years and I thought I could take the spring semester and work in a hospital or clinic. So, would you recommend graduating with Bio in Dec and working in the spring? Or would it be better to stick around in the spring to finish off the biomedical engineering degree? I don't know if the extra degree will give me a good boost for getting into med school, or if I should just not worry about it. My idealized situation (for whatever it is worth) would look like this: Graduate with bio in Dec., have been accepted to my state school by then (they let people know really early), and go overseas to work in a clinic during the spring/summer.

What do you think?

Stick with bio. My premed advisor tells students all the time that med schools aren't really impressed by double or triple majors. Unless you're interested in obtaining that second major/degree, don't go for it.

I doubt the extra degree will help you much. I'd do the clinic work(much more fun and interesting). And 3.54 is just fine, especially with your great upward trend. That was my GPA, with a strong upward trend, and no one said a thing about it in interviews. Good luck.
