Hi, I am a HS senior with aspirations of going to dental school. I sure have learned a lot by following the chat on this site. 😱 Can you tell me the pros and cons of a dual degree program like UT San Antonio Dental Schools' Dual Degree/Early Acceptance (3+4) Program?http://dental.uthscsa.edu/admissions/dds_dual.html

As you know I would complete a special three-year curriculum designed by the undergraduate institution. The student applies to dental school when he/she has completed between 12 and 30 hours of college work, and is attending a university affiliated with the UTHSCSA Dental Schools' Dual Degree/Early Acceptance (3+4) Program. As the student completes required courses in Dental School, credit for designated courses will be applied to undergraduate degree requirements. Generally, the bachelor’s degree is awarded by the undergraduate institution when the student has completed the first or second year of dental studies.

The obvious benefit is financial. I am taking college classes now and will have completed one semester of college work when I matriculate as a Freshman. I just realized that I could theoretically apply to dental school my freshman year, if I wanted to rush it.

Whadaya think? 😎

Sounds great. I'd go for it. One thing to think about though is if you REALLY, know without a doubt, that you want to become a dentist. The only reason I say this is because my first two years in college I changed my mind about a dozen times on what I wanted to do in life and finally came back to my original plan - dentistry.

Also, if you are going to have to pay for college and you don't have any scholarships or aid, this doesn't sound like a bad idea at all. It would save you money in the end...I think 😉

Good luck!
