What does the navy only have exodontia? Do exodontists do sedation?

It clears up the OMFS guys to actually do OMFS.

I’m surprised there are only 4 OS slots, I haven’t seen so few. Same with Comp. I’ve also never seen 5 slots for max prosth.

The 4 denotes a 4-year residency. Max Prost. is a 1-year fellowship. Has nothing to do with how many they are taking this year. The legend is posted at the bottom of OP post.

Is it pure folly to apply to two different programs in the same application? Like 1st choice Endo FTIS, second choice ACP Exodontia?
 
They do, after all, have first choice/second choice boxes. And they don't tend to offer Endo FTOS. So what is the endo applicant to put in the second choice box? Apply again next year? **Shrug**

Can I apply for a Navy specialty if I am in a different branch?

I heard of one like 10 years ago, and from what I remember of the story it happened almost by mistake.

Anyway, I'm applying for endo. Didn't get it last year, but hey, almost no one does on their first try. But tbqh I don't know that I'd apply a third time next year which is why I was thinking about putting ACP exodontia as a second choice, but then I didn't want to jeopardize my chances at endo by presenting an appearance of anything other than 100% committed to endo and only endo.

I know an Army prosthodontist who did the residency at Walter Reed. That's what got me interested in applying for the same specialty across all three branches.

Yeah definitely don’t put a second choice if you’re eyeing for endo. Endo is very common to have to apply more than once. They have so many applicants and can be quite selective.

What I’m curious about though. How hard is it to separate and then get back in as a specialist? Lol.. maybe a question for the recruiter…

No interest in doing endo in civilian world?

Its definitely doable to come back in. Only issue is if there is a billet/manning availability for you to sign the dotted line

Previous endo specialty leader did exactly that. Came back as a CDR, picked up CAPT now

Haha lots of interest in that. After retirement from a full career the Navy. I already used my GI Bill on dental school though (concurrent with HSCP, was a 9 year prior URL officer) and I have 4 kids. Frankly I can't afford to not get paid for 2-3 years no matter how much an endodontist makes in private practice. I very much want to be an endodontist, I just don't see any other way to do it other than at Walter Reed.
 
I suppose I could try to use the CIP to do civilian residency and then come back as...still technically a general dentist unless they could switch me over. Though the terms of CIP state that you come back into precisely what your old job was. Which doesn't make sense given how many people use it to gain new credentials in whatever their craft. I'd have insane student debt, my Navy retirement would be delayed by 2 to 3 years, and I'd be working in the Navy as a general dentist (moonlighting as endo though)...but hey, I'd be an endodontist.

Isn’t there a Direct Accession bonus for specialists? That would take care of the loan. Also keep in mind PSLF is still a thing. You can make minimum payments until retirement and keep the bonus.

Even if there were a DA bonus, I highly doubt a returning CIPer would rate it. You're obligated anyway, why would they pay you a bonus?

I had heard (again just spreading rumors) that current residents were dropping out including one that just had 1 year left. But I was also just told yesterday that this is embellished. One resident was not advanced and in general OMS is increasing their numbers to make up for shortages.
