The thing with paper is that the dean touched the letter that accepted you. I don't know about you guys I had 0 success (0 out of 1) when I asked girls out for the first time over AIM but about 50% success (1 out of 2) when I asked them out in person; there's something more sincere about it.

In person whether phone, mail, or showing up to your house creates some credibility for it.

Would you want to know you had a terminal illness over email or ask someone to marry you over email, no!

EDIT: I realize my numbers are not statistically significant.

what's your success rate on eharmony.com? hahah (not that i use it). instead of AMCAS, we should have medharmony.com 😍, a system that matches you with a med school school based on 20 dimensions of compatibility.

Now I am honestly asking here... What is sooo hard about emailing people??? Is it really that time consuming? Does a simple email not work? Am I missing something here???

I think it's also a matter of preventing a mistake. Remember back in the day when electronic applications were new? There was totally a school that accidentally accepted a good number of people that it had meant to reject. I could see them being worried about database errors, especially considering all the IT issues they had earlier. For example, I had a weird thing happen to me with the PAS: sometime between starting and finishing my secondary app online, I mysteriously "gained" a sister who attended DukeMed. I deleted it off my application of course, but I wondered what happened to the application of the person who actually entered in their sister's name.

That reminds me...one of my classmates was accepted off the waitlist to Yale (I think it was yale) the day before she got in off the waitlist at Duke. Turns out they actually mixed her up with another applicant who had the same name and never meant to accept her. Now that's just evil.

Dude, seriously kids. Listen to Burnsie and Diosa when they say the waitlist moves like gangbusters. Our year might have been a little out of the ordinary as far as accepting 200 people for a 100 person class, but if you get one of the little envelopes instead of one of the big ones, that's not your coda. LOIs, phone calls to Richard Wallace, genuflecting at the door of Davison - just do what it takes and don't resign yourself to a f*cking sh*tty dormitory in the middle of Washington Heights or a crack-alley in Baltimore. You want your gothic wonderland.

about the living environment, i beg to differ. duke the school and the people will get me to stay. the surroundings however, will not.

What is so hard about individually emailing 100 ppl??? Honestly? It doesn't take that much time. Come one now... this waiting game is so lame. I wish everything were done over the internet. Snail mail is for snails... not humans!!! Human mail = email! EMAIL I TELL YOU!!!

Lets not think bad thoughts about waitlists yet. We apparently still have a chance at a few more acceptances. The way I see it, there were some ppl who got in who had like mondo awesome records and had close to a 5 for their interviews or whatever... this week, they are probably sending acceptances to the 4.65-4.9 crowd... just my speculation but whatever.

Soon it will be time for all of us 4.5s!

You dudes need to stop speculating.... like I said before, you have no news until you have news. Just try to relax and not think negative thoughts...

Easier said than done my dookter friend. Easier said than done... :scared:

No I actually don't mind much anymore cuz I'm pretty sure I'll get waitlisted cuz I wasn't a super mondo tubular awesome candidate. I have already started planning new stuff to send to Duke to get in off the waitlist.

A few numbers, just for the sake of argument. . .

20 minutes to a decent hike.
30 minutes to a stellar lake.
2 hours to the beach.
3 hours to a number of great rock climbing areas.
4 hours to the AT
5 hours to the best snowboarding in the southeast (yeah, it's not saying a lot, but it's there), or the capital, or Florida.

$350 each for a 2br 2ba
$500 for a decent studio
$600 for a 1 br 1 ba
$600 for a $80k mortgage.

I, for one, can't complain. 😀

Yeah, I appreciate this place too. Better than Memphis, TN fo shizzle.

No kidding. I'm so happy that Penn updates the status page. This way we all know at the same time.

I'm just waiting for a new user with the screen name RWallace to show up on this thread and be like... "Everyone needs to stop all their bitching. We will give out acceptances however we damn well please. And, females, you are rejected anyway you loud mouth. Stop sending me LOIs. I know you want to come here. But we don't want you." 😱 🙁

Althought I would personally find that hilarious [except for the part about rejecting you...], I would not hold your breath.... the people in admissions here are some of the nicest on campus...

Nicely done....ha ha ha.

I agree with you, but I wouldn't mind finding out first online. The Dean still sends you the "touched" paper later.

Richard Wallace is the man. 👍 👍

i just finished reading the last two pages on this thread. it is amazing how pessimistic you guys are. it seems as though only a few results have been reported. have some faith and be optimistic.🙂

But that was 5 pages and 250 posts ago! 🙂

I just realized, I don't even get the luxury of seeing a manila envelope first. My mailbox here is so small that they have to leave me a package slip for large envelopes. So it's either a small envelope or a small piece of paper...

I know Richard Wallace would never say anything like this in real life. The part I liked best about him is that he keeps it so freakin real. He seems like the kinda guy you just wanna go grab a beer with and talk about the good things in life. (sorry if that sounds super lame-o... im having a moment right now)

So all you northern/west coast applicants accepted to Duke, everything you have heard, all the stereotypes and rumors, about the south are all true so yall ( notice the yall) should totally decline the offer...hahaha just kidding..sort of...😉 .....good luck to all those still waiting!

Yes, I keep it so freakin real, and NO you CANNOT get a beer with me... that's because I only drink everclear and sometimes the souls of students who wish to get in off the waitlist (I have some of the MS1s turn them into liquid)... interested?

Hey congrats. I have a suspicious feeling that the rest of us are going to be rejected though. When was is postmarked btw?

Big congrats to all acceptees!!! You guys are amazing! Btw, for us who are still waiting, the decision should be sent to our address listed on the PAS account (confirmed with the admissions office). =) Good luck everyone.

Congrats to all those with acceptances! I am checking in from a Hostel on the AT, no news for me yet according to my parents. Hang in there femalescantdrive!

my dad said he received it yesterday. its in the process of priority mailing to me right now (he first opened it to see if i was accepted, of course). oh, indian parents. sorry, i cant help you right now with the postmarked date. goodluck to all :luck: :luck: :luck:

btw, richard wallace is the man. very down-to-earth. i have a feeling that he was largely involved in getting me in. i had a very casual talk with him in his office on interview day.

Has Duke shown any Californians some admissions love? I think I read that one Northern Californian was admitted--but is that it?? Duke, you need some free spirited people like those in California!!! Cumbaya! RWallace, since you've graced us with your presence in this forum, just ADMIT ME!? Please? HA.

There is no postmark on the envelope. Maybe the meter sticker tells the postmark date, but I don't know how to read meter. My letter was dated 3/2. That might be a better question to ask.

Hang in there all! If anyone deserves to get in out of sheer enthusiasm, it is the people on this thread!

Does anyone else feel a sense of impending doom?

Well, I feel a sense of impending waitlisting. It's more of a normal, status-quo type of feeling than anything else. 😳 Practically homey by now.

lol, status quo for me is rejections, so I feel a sense of impending getting my ass rejected one more time.

Yep, if I don't get anything today I'm going to start assuming waitlist. Stolen interviewed the same day I did, but, NC->FL << NC->MN, so I think I have 1 day of leeway. 😱

UT-southwestern is such a sweet school. It'd be hard to turn down that price for any private school, IMO.

True -- don't think I'm complaining! If this process doesn't make a person feel lucky to be Texan, nothing will. I don't think I would even be admitted at this point if I weren't; never mind admitted to a fantastic and affordable school.

Yea... I wish I was from Texas or California, eh!

Florida needs a better school than UF. I can't believe that's the best we can do in this highly populated, rich state.

being from california isnt so great. getting into the schools is just as hard as getting into hopkins, harvard, duke, etc.

UF would be better off if it wasn't in Gainesville. In 30 years, I think UCF's medical school will be the flagship medical school for the state of Florida.

On a different note: I asked this earlier and nobody responded so I'm trying again:

Does Duke pay for any of the travel expenses for the second look weekend? (It's right around the corner, March 30).

being from california isnt so great. getting into the schools is just as hard as getting into hopkins, harvard, duke, etc.

thats true, but you also have 4 elite medical schools....3 of which have a gigantic duty towards in-state residents since they are public schools.

thus you have hopkins, harvard, etc caliber schools with just one state worth of competition (unlike privates that make you compete with the whole world).

You have to realize that no other state (besides texas) has elite ''affordable'' schools.
