secondary isn't shut down to me, i'm not finished either. so i guess that's good. what time zone 12am?

The Duke University School of Medicine Secondary Application deadline is December 20, 2007. In an effort to further accomodate applicants, applications will be accepted thorough December 20, 2007 until 12:00 AM December 21, 2007. At 12:01 AM December 22, 2007, the Duke Secondary Application will no longer be accessible.

Something's a typo here. This is hilarious. Well not really.

Well. I got it in either way. One essay wasn't the best but the rest were solid. Here's to hoping.🙂 Good luck nata723

Yay, glad you finished, synth! I'm glad your essays were solid; I hardly had a chance to read over mine to check them. Best of luck to you!!!!!:luck:

Good luck yall!!!

Burnsie, you know that I will always be your banana man (does that sound wrong?).

wow i can't even imagine what it's like to be in med school and married...marriage just always seemed so far away haha. so are you and your husband determined to go to the same med school or would long distance be cool too?

We're going to the same school; we've already been accepted together here in Mississippi.

Hi guys - Duke is my top choice, and so I tried to make my secondary spectacular (having 34 MCAT and 3.8 GPA). Unfortunately, that meant pondering over it and working on it for a very long time. I didn't finish until the night of. Well, I got an email Sunday morning for a Duke interview!!!!!! So, y'all have a chance. Good luck! I'm incredibly excited, and cannot wait to see Duke. I think I can even schedule in January, starting in the second week.

I was wondering if anyone knew how that email notification works? Because I got the email on Sunday morning... And I wonder when the committee (or screeners) even saw my application. I just hope it wasn't a mistake =).

ETA: "I've made a huge mistake" (cue GOB). All the dates (starting with 2nd week of January) to February were bold. However, upon clicking one, I realized that they are all - every single one - "not available." The message I get is "There are no available spaces for interviewing on this day. Please use the calendar to choose again." Hmmm. The calls to the Admissions office go unanswered (they re-open Jan. 2nd.) Aw, crap - i hope my interview offer was not a very early april fool's joke. ahh!!!!

If you have the option to schedule an interview, then it's most likely not a mistake. However, it is highly possible that all the Duke interviews are taken. You might have to schedule a regional interview.

Thanks! That gives me great relief =).

Duke rules! Classes start back tomorrow 🙂

Does Duke have a hosting system for interviewees? I would really rather not spend money on a hotel/motel if I can avoid it...

P.S. They opened up more interview dates. I'll be interviewing the first week of Feb.

Hi all!
I interviewed in December and absolutely LOVED Duke. The school had such a lively exciting "vibe" and every single person I met was so interesting, welcoming and happy (even the students who were in the midst of finals seemed happy, just tired!) I interviewed with Dr. Armstrong and it was one of the most enjoyable conversations I've had thus far. I've been thinking about the school ever since and I really, really want to go there (as do we all I guess!)
So, question for the current students: on my interview day, Richard Wallace emphasized that we should keep and touch and update them about what we were doing and our interest in Duke. How frequently did you all write to them? Like one letter of interest or several updates? I don't want to go overboard, but I want them to know how much I want to go.
Thanks and good luck everyone!

Yes there are student hosts. I think you can select that option when you schedule your interview, and then your student host will contact you a week or two before your interview (although sometimes it's more like a couple of days... never fear, they always find you one if you requested one). If you have any questions about the hosting, just call admissions.

I sent a letter of intent, got waitlisted, sent 2 more letters, and got in off the waitlist. For now my recommendation would be to send an update letter/LOI sometime in Feb and see what happens in March. No matter how many letters you send, it's probably not going to help you if they've already decided to reject you, but it may help if you get waitlisted or are on the borderline of waitlist/accept.

I sent a letter of interest, got waitlisted, sent additional letters of rec and wrote a letter of intent, got off the waitlist, yelled and screamed a bit, freaked out, and the rest is history.

Come on Females, give yourself a little credit. . .

. . . you freaked out at LEAST four times.

And now it's time for a more useful and helpful post. . .

It's so good to hear from people who are as excited about this school as I was/am. You should definitely follow RW's suggestion and keep in touch. I would suggest doing it on three occasions:

1) directly after your interview. I did this, and I said something about how it was the most enjoyable interview experience I had had (it was #7 or 8 chronologically for me) and how welcome I felt and excited I was blah blah blah. All true. No BS. If you really feel this way about your experience, TELL THEM! Can only help you.

2) if something major changes in your CV over the course of the year. Examples: a) publication b) some type of really awesome award ("senior of the year" or something) c) any other majorly good news that could conceivably boost your app.

3) if you get waitlisted and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you want to come here, you can write a strong Letter of Interest (non-binding) or a Letter of Intent (which says that if they take you off the WL you WILL attend). Some people currently in my class also did some phone calls and one actually made an extra trip out here to meet with RW and the dean one more time just to show how committed he was. It worked. I'm not saying this will ALWAYS work, but I can't see how it could hurt unless it was very badly executed.

:luck::luck::luck: in 2008!

PS. February is a lucky month. We've got like 5 people in my class from Valentine's Day 2006 alone. Just ask Burnsie.

Go Duke! I can't wait to interview next month. Hmmm....I wonder if interviewing late will hurt me. But so glad I turned in the secondary!

i'm with ya!! late interview but HAPPY that the looong secondary worked out =D!!!!! congrats and maybe i'll be meeting some of you late (feb) interviewers !

Thank you for the reply Pagemma, I really really appreciate the advise of all you current students. Part of what I loved so much on the visit was how eager all the students were to talk to us and talk about Duke and seeing you guys on SDN definitely reinforces that.
To everyone who's interviewing soon, look forward to a great day! i'll definitely be checking this thread and thinking about Duke until March!

Dude, it's really exciting to see some excited hopeful Dukies. Let us know when y'all are interviewing, and we can come by the admissions office and say Hi and answer some questions or something on the interview day.

so i'm another on a late interview high...just curious but does it matter when you interview - as long as you interview? i mean its non-rolling, so i don't see the difference btw. sept and feb. Can anyone validate me?

Thanks!

We talked about this earlier, but there are lots of people who get in interviewing in February. It doesn't matter at all when you interview.

Thanks for the  FCD...here's an extra one for Neuro!

I think I am the second to last day interviewing in February and the committee makes final decisions in March, which means I will have no post-interview update in time. As far as my current update, should I send it now or bring it with me and hand it to my interviewer or someone else at Duke? I guess I could send a quick post-interview update too. Opinions?

Just got an invitation to interview this morning!

I would just bring an update letter to your interview and ask the receptionist to add a copy to your file. Bring a couple of extra copies if you want to show them to your interviewers (this is probably not necessary unless they ask or you get on the topic, or if your interviewer happens to be Dr. Armstrong). If you really end up liking Duke, you can always just send a quick email to Richard Wallace or Dr. Armstrong saying that you enjoyed the day and would love to go here, blah blah blah.

Oh ok I see it now, thanks burnsie. You guys (med students) have been very helpful with everything! good luck to everyone!

Thanks!

One problem- there aren't any interview days open...any idea when they'll be opening up more?

Keep checking the interview page (supposedly they opened up more spots a while ago). You'll probably have to schedule a regional interview, but don't worry! Regional interviews seem to have excellent success rates (according to the Duke website, regional interviewees have very slightly higher acceptance rates than regular interviewees). Good luck!

last time i checked february 19+ was open, or you could call and they might be able to squeeze you in on day thats unavailable if you have a good reason for pursuing that day (thats what I did)

Just called the admissions office (the guy was so helpful!). He said that there is a problem with the online thing and that most days have less than 15 people (which is the max), but that the website still wouldn't let people sign up so they're trying to get that fixed. He asked me what date I wanted and he said he'd call me back and see if he could schedule it for me.

So I heard from a reliable source that updates really don't come into question until waitlist action starts. So you can wait off on the update if you want, or you can just get it in now to get it off your mind.

5th page? Really?

Man, we're slacking. Either that or it's not a very Duke-hungry year.

Ya... kids these days. No heart. No desire.

Lets not generalize, FCD. I'm sporting a Duke shirt right now! I'm just saving my energy until we inevitably begin the countdown to decision time.

What the heck, why wait! Only 54 days left, roughly.

🙂 I agree. Why not start now?

Got my interview invite this morning. I had almost given up hope! The website still seems to be having scheduling problems/the slots really ARE full, but I've got a call in to the admissions office. Good luck to all!:luck:
