Don't forget about R-dub's orientation oration. For that, he'll stand on a cafeteria table and get close to shedding a few tears.

Dr. D, he pretty much inspires me on a daily basis. Why do you think I give so many tours? For every tour I give, I usually get to hear one of these famed RW speeches.

Well you two make great Dook salemen.

Who inspires you more though, RW with his speeches or the ALS lecturer with his suits?

Oooooo... a tough choice indeed. RW inspires me to live life to its fullest while ALS guy inspires me to wear really sweet Italian suits and look down on my colleagues for their inability to match their clothes and/or wear the appropriate size.

PS: B&B = +pissed+

Nevercold, are you who I think you are??? A 4th year going into surgery who has been on the adcom before... I think I know.

Nah, but I know who you are talking about. I'm definitely anti-surgery. I'm one of the only two people in my class going into Med-Peds. Speaking of which, people should go into Med-Peds. Spread the word.

If you did a month in Pickens from November to December, than I know who you are 🙂. I was the female 2nd year there, and we spent some wonderful time together doing a QI project.

Good news for everyone who submitted their secondary late. Looks like Duke officially opened up more interview dates through the 7th, according to the status page.

I'm sorry that this is such a stupid question, but what is Med-Peds?

not so good news for people who interviewed early....means we'll have to wait even longer now to find out!! >.<

See, now now nevercold, if one is, perhaps, pro-surgery, will a big fat PASS in internal medicine kill chances? or do I have to suck it up and actually do WELL next block (because I'm having a great time watching TV and going snowboarding while on peds). . .

Internal Medicine is awful.

Also, I just got home from surgery. HOW COME NO ONE TOLD ME THERE ARE 9 HOUR CABG SURGERIES?

very true, March 7 is the last day of interviews, which is a Friday. I imagine they wouldn't send out letters until Monday at the earliest. That means we still have 56 days left 🙁

I'm sorry that this is such a stupid question, but what is Med-Peds?

Med-Peds is a glorious entity that combines an Internal Medicine residency and a Pediatrics residency into a four year program (each categorical program is normally 3 years), allowing the person completing a Med-Peds residency to become board certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. The emphasis is on thorough training, especially inpatient care, in both (vs. Family Medicine which has much less Peds but also includes OB/Gyn and surgery as well as much more community medicine).

Also, sorry to the peeps that don't like Internal Medicine (I loved it).

To pagemmapants, surgery is more important than medicine to people going into surgery, but I think surgery residencies look for good scores in medicine moreso than vice versa. Also, a lot of surgery is more competitive than medicine, so the better you can do, well, the better. Maybe aim for the high pass so you can still slack a little.

To MrBurns10, I am indeed the lazy med student from Pickens. That QI project wasn't even a part of my rotation, but since I was only there for 60% of the rotation, I figured what the heck.

To Diosa428, I highly suggest Simpsons episodes. Replaying entire episodes of The Simpsons in my mind was what got me through long surgeries.

That sucks that y'all have to wait longer. Good work on the new count down, though

Getting home at 7:24 pm? LUXURY! My first day of surg I didn't set foot outside the OR until 11:34pm. And I was back at 5:00am the next day to preround.

Stop being such a slacker. 😀

EDIT: and re: CABG surgeries, do you see NOW why I hate cardiac? Frigging bypass waiting game. I'd rather have a 9 hour TRAM flap than a 9 hour CABG any day.

And re: medicine grade. . . I know, I know. I think a HP will keep me content and if I get an H I might just freak the hell out. Depends on how willing to work hard I am after inpatient peds. . . hopefully my 2 weeks on ENT will cheer me up enough to make it through the last 8 weeks of hell I can expect for this year.

Pagemma, you are taking over the thread. Let others have their turn now. 😍

55 days just seems like such a long time.

it's a good prep for the waitlist, if it comes to that.

Ya... that's true. I remember that I couldn't sleep the week before acceptances came out at Duke last year. Then, I got WLed so I ended up having to wait until May 11th. Moral of the story - don't worry about it. When it comes, it comes. No need to really worry about it, because you have no control of what is going to happen. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

MY thread.

*takes up space*

You would be taking up space with those big ole beefy arms.

First of all, I don't know why that post shows a time of 7:24, because I definitely didn't get home until after 9. Second of all, now I have you beat, because I just got out of the OR at 1am, after an 11 hour surgery (CABG + mitral valve repair). Luckily I'm on call tonight so I get to go home tomorrow and sleeeeeeeep 😀

PS, when I'm on ophtho, I'm going to get out at 5 everyday, which beats your tram flap whateverthehellyouretalkingabout. I think you should stick with ortho. Power tools turn me on.

Hey all, FemalesCANT just mentioned something I've been wondering about: what is the earliest date that non-rolling schools tend to offer waitlist spots?

I would have assumed that it was May 15, when folks have opted for their top choice school. Since folks with non-rolling acceptances (Harvard, Duke, Penn, etc.) aren't likely to commit until closer to the deadline, I would have guessed that schools wouldn't have much new information until May 15, and so wouldnt be able to offer WL spots...

Thanks for any alternative logic or anecdotal evidence!

Duke sends WL letters along with the rest of the decisions in March. There isn't any movement off the wait list until May 15th though.

But FemalesCANT got in on May 11, so maybe there is earlier movement?

FCD was the first to hear last year. He is probably an exception because everyone knows he is all about Duke, and I'm guessing the admissions office just couldn't wait 4 more days to get him off of the list. The WL letter says they don't move the wait list until May 15, and I think in previous years they've stayed right on that date or very close to it.

Good to know, thanks. Anyone have anecdotal evidence from friends at other schools?

Yeah, I'm not sure about other schools. But I do know this...54

What happened last year was that I was the first one off the WL. I had sent RW an email the week before that basically with some last updates/anecdotes/pleas for mercy, and I had mentioned in that email that I was graduating on the 12th. I guess they thought it would be nice to tell me before graduation so they called on the 11th (BEST DAY EVER!!!). So ya... it was a special circumstance, and it just goes to show you how thoughtful the administration is at Duke. Either way, the first day is usually the 15th or 16th.

Oh ya... in other news... it is my contention that Duke will still get a good number of their acceptances out at the aforementioned date (even though they extended the interview dates). They will then assess for the last little group of people plus the recent interviewees before sending out the last little portion of acceptances. That is what I'm thinking anyway. So for some of you, the wait might not have to be any longer than you first thought.

excellent news, I hope that is the case.

page 3 is no place for a duke thread.

I knew that. I'm dumb. My bad. Is there seriously emphasis on saying the "THE"???

Yes, honest-to-goodness, there is. I've been subconsciously trained, too. It ain't no thing to say it like that when you are in Columbus, but I was home for Christmas and got some funny looks.

How are classes? Just this week I was finishing lining up my summer gig and wished that I was just going to plow thru lectures all summer, start rotations later this year, then have a full year to actually accomplish something research-wise.

Other than that, I really like it here.

For those of you that already interviewed at Duke, does your secondary application show that they have received your LOR. If not do you know if they will update that just before the big review day in March?

Classes are good I guess. They are fast and furious, but we are in brain and behavior right now so it's super interesting. I'm not really sure how we are going to make it to June 27th. Guess we just have to take it one test at a time or something. The semester should be getting much more interesting, though, because we are about to start physical exams and practicing that and history taking on the wards with a preceptor. We are gonna be like little junior doctors or something... SCARY!

Have yall started physical exam stuff yet?

No, I interviewed over a month ago and they never updated it for me, and I know others that never had their lor status updated. I just called and confirmed that they had them. I don't think they are super strict about when you get them in, but you should probably call to be sure.

Mine are also still listed as not recieved. When I called before the interview to make sure they were there, the woman I spoke to said they were but that they don't look at the letters until after the interviews-- so maybe they just haven't gotten to that stage of evaluations yet, or maybe they haven't updated the website for anyone.
In other news, this thread has been slow!
We're at 51 right?
Anyone have exciting weekend plans?

Mine also says 'not received' and I interviewed in October. I did call and verify that they have received my letters via VirtualEval awhile ago, so I wonder whether the not received is any indication that they decided not to review my file post interview....Although I am probably looking to far into this.
