Fellows, I do understand how hard it must be. I was in your position a few weeks ago after my interview. But if you haven't received anything yet, don't loose hope. No news is good news for now. I'm sure that if you interviewed at Duke, you are a very competitive applicant and will be handling several acceptances so at least you are not in a very bad position. I know..........I love Duke too! Hmmm...let's see what happens. For now, please keep hoping for the best.

talk about being optimistic
maybe they forgot to send me an email but they actually send me an acceptance letter that I haven't received yet =P

There won't be any waitlist news yet because they won't be sending the letters until today. So expect news next week....

Just wanted to let you guys know that I got my waitlist letter🙂 in Chapel Hill today, so they did get out, and are on their way. Best of luck to everyone :luck:

does it mention how many people are on the waitlist?

Got my waitlist letter in Durham too!!

Received a waitlist letter today in SC too. It could have been here earlier, but I was at home over the holiday. But yeah, I have the same question--does anyone know how many people are on the waitlist? I certainly would go if I got in off the waitlist, but my current choice right now is in a city where good apartments are going to be hard to find closer to the summer. If everyone gets put on the waitlist (like Vandy for example) and there's little shot of getting in, I might go ahead and start apartment hunting; if not, I'll hold on until late May or so to see what happens. I know several of the med students who frequent the thread were accepted off the waitlist, but do y'all know how many are on it and on average, how many they take? Thanks!

Hypotheses have been that about 100 are on the waitlist, although I don't think anyone has every actually asked. Maybe FCD can ask when he gets back from spring break. People definitely DO get rejected though, as I'm sure will become apparent in a few days as more decisions are sent. There's also no way of telling how likely you are to get in - the waitlist is unranked and rumor has it that admissions likes to select their class to have a certain makeup, so you get pulled from the waitlist if your "match" decides not to come - ie, if not enough female nontrads decide to come, and you're a female nontrad, then you get in. The specifics, however, are a mystery. Historically, students who have been very active about getting off the waitlist get in (if you're bored, read the Duke thread from last year detailing FCD's weekly emails to Richard Wallace - most of us didn't take it quite to that extent, just sent in an LOI or two with updates). Likewise, there will be people who do not send in LOIs who get in, and people who do send them in who never get off the waitlist. But it certainly can't hurt if Duke is your first choice.

As for how many students come off the waitlist, that varies by year. I think the year before me there were a decent number (20?), my year there were a lot, due to the bad publicity that the university got after the lacrosse case, but last year there were practically none (less than 10).

I got a waitlist letter today in PA. It was dated 3/21. Good luck to everyone!

Anybody on the east coast not received a rejection/waitlist letter yet?

I haven't seen anything. Has anyone received a rejection letter?

Good question. I was thinking it's a bit odd that so many are posting with WLs, but no rejections....unless they sent them out on different days.

Manhattan- Duke waitlist. THIS IS MY TENTH WAITLIST. WHY?

Sooo.... are there really only 100 people on the Duke waitlist?

anyone have last year's applied/interviewed/accepted/enrolled statistics?

Just to let you guys know, I called and she said that the wait list letters were sent out Friday and the rejection letters were sent out today🙁

man, only 10/100 off the waitlist last year! That is unfortunate news for us waitlisters. I hope this year there is more 😉

At least we made it this far I suppose.

Also, did anyone notice that Dr. Armstrong's letter lists her as the dean and also the director of admissions? I thought RW was director of admissions.

I just got my wait list letter today in CA.

better than a rejection, but like the rest of you, I want in!

Got a waitlist today in MD, dated 3/21. I was away for easter so I don't know when it actually came.

I have this weird feeling that Duke decided to give fewer outright acceptances and way more waitlists this year... thoughts?

Sooo... when is the best time to send letters of interest/update letters?

Waitlisted today in Cali...

What makes you think that Duke gave out fewer acceptances this year? I'd be interested in hearing your theory.

Yeah, it's time to send in letters of intent and updates! I sent in a letter of interest post interview but I guess that didn't work so well. But I've already listed all my reasons in my letter so now I'm out of things to say 🙁

It just seems like there weren't a lot of outright acceptances in this thread... but there are a WHOLE bunch of waitlists. So, my guess is based on people posting in this thread. Obviously, this isn't a scientific way to do things. Should we address the LOI to Dr. Armstrong? I hope so- she interviewed me and I could write a very nice, personal letter to her.

Yes you can address it to Dr. Armstrong, which I would suggest doing if you interviewed with her. You could also address it to Richard Wallace if you interviewed with him or interacted with him on interview day.

bah!

if i don't get a waitlist letter today, i'm assuming rejection 🙁. i'm pretty much already thinking 80% rejection, 20% waitlist chance at this point for me..

as far as waitlist movement, when i was at the interview, Dean Armstrong said that last year they interviewed 675, accepted 173 and pulled 16 off the waitlist. not sure if those 16 are a part of the 173 or not.

these numbers are slightly lower than us news numbers though, which say 792 interviewed, 206 accepted, 101 matriculated. not sure which are right.

from the post-interview survey, it looks like ~775 interviewed this year, which is pretty similar to last year.

One of the admissions people told me they interviewed more than 1000 this year.

obviously i haven't ever posted here before... but i've been reading the thread for a few months now.. and would love to thank you guys for the mostly helpful info! it made the wait to the letter easier....

my status: waitlisted in seattle, got the letter yesterday (monday) and it was dated 3/21.

here's hoping i can get *off* the waitlist... any suggestions? i absolutely loved duke when i visited for my interview and could see myself flourishing there.

I received the waitlist notification in Cali yesterday too.

I'm starting my LOI today--does anyone think it would also be a good idea to send another LOR from a doctor I've been working with this year?

Thanks, and good luck to everyone!

I think the total interviewing was closer to 1000 when you add in all the regional interviews. The number 173 represents the initial 173 acceptances sent last year. Of those, 85 matriculated. Then 33 additional acceptances were sent to waitlisted students, of which 16 matriculated. Total acceptances sent out = 206. Total matriculated = 101.

I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers were similar this year.

Hey do they give you guys a copy of the match list?

thanks for the clarification, nevercold! that all makes a lot more sense now.
yeah i probably should have said at least 775 people interviewed this year

diosa, we got a 2007 match list on interview day. needless to say it was quite impressive!

anddddd i'm chalking up a rejection from duke because i ahve yet to hear 🙁🙁. i'll try again in four years...

Mmmm I'm looking for the 2008 one - match day was last week! 🙂 Goodluck with the waiting, I know it's terrible! :luck:

for what it's worth: i recently heard (from a duke med student) that there are around 200 applicants on the waitlist this year. i guess that makes it somewhere around 175 acceptances, 200 WL, 375+ rejections...

Waitlisted in SC too. Wow! its like the whole list is represented. does any one know how many of us there is going to be in total?

Did you just get the WL letter in the mail today? They are still sending out waitlists? Has anyone received a ... bad letter yet?

nope but ill be anticipating it today 🙁

Man, still no mail today.. I'm starting to think that my letter got lost or that they are saving the Super Rejects for last 🙂. Is anybody else still waiting to hear?

argencolts ill let you know in 1.5-2 hours when the mail at work gets delivered to my floor =)

rejection yesterday...oh well no biggie

Oh man, this is ridiculous. I am still waiting to hear, though I am not in the US so mail takes much longer to get to me. But thank god for SDN, bc otherwise I'd still be waiting to hear if I was accepted or not. Please, just let my letter arrive so that I can fully move on with my life. Sigh.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions as to what I can possibly do to get into med school in the next cycle (other than take more science courses, which is not really an option for many reasons), I am all ears. This is all so incredibly depressing....

waitlisted in So-Cali today.

Didn't get a second look email either.

I know there are a lot of waitlist letters going out - but isn't this basically a rejection (considering the little movement of the WL)?

oh that's a depressing thought...

duke is by far my top choice, and there's bound to be some movement off the waitlist, which gives me some hope. even if it's just a few people, that's a few more than zero!
