Okay, I should know this but I don't, so I'm going to go ahead and ask.

When I opened my practice I did all my projections with $XXX revenue per patient. I assumed for some reason at the time that that number was for routine exams and didn't include red eye type stuff. Now I'm not so sure and I can't seem to find a definitive answer. So...

Is revenue per patient based on full exams only? Does it include red eyes? If so, let's say you see an ulcer patient four times. Do you add up the four times and count that as your gross revenue for the patient? It seems like that would be a pain in the ass to calculate.

Fire away!

Okay, I found this definition:

"The gross collected revenue for any specified period divided by the number of comprehensive exams administered during the same period."

That's what I was thinking it was when I opened and it's pretty easy to calculate. I wonder what's considered a "comprehensive exam". I assume all routines would count. What about a headache patient? What about a glaucoma workup? Dry eye workup? Any thoughts?

I think the two important stats are the one you described.....amount per comprehensive exam and the second is the total amount of money made per doctor hour worked.
