You know I was just thinking about schools today and how the competitiveness of a school relates to the overall happiness of the student. I have heard over and over about how the student that eventually get into medical school are displeased with the situation and what not of the profession that they have picked out for a vast assortment of reasons. But those first 2 years, maybe 3? Does it matter big time on what school you go to do ya think? People that go to a top 10 school are happier because they are surrounded by others who are on a equal playing field in terms of their "smarts" or drive to become a great doctor? Or are the ones that go to a D.O. school happier because they are surrounded by people who might not be gunners as much? Any input is welcome.

your answer is "yes" this is a dumb question

How on earth would YOU know? You're not in medical school yet!!!! While it may not be the best question in the world, I feel that having concerns about how to choose the right school for you is legitimate and probably wise. Now be ncie.

Go to a school that you think is a good fit. Do you like the location, curriculum, class size, professors, research emphasis, and guy:girl ratio of the school.

I haven't read any scientific reports on the "happiness" rating of medical schools yet. But typically students at top schools have more talent, drive, motivation than their peers, that's why they're at "top" schools.

Or are the ones that go to a D.O. school happier because they are surrounded by people who might not be gunners as much? Any input is welcome.

If you want to think that DO students are happier then go to a DO school. If you want to think that MD students are happier then go to a MD school. Gunners are everywhere. I would say there are an equal amount of students who are happy or miserable in every school, medical or otherwise.

The 2 students graduating with the highest and lowest graduating GPAs from the best and worst medical schools will both be a doctor. Get in to med school and figure out which school is the best fit for yourself. Hopefully you will be happy.

everyone in us allo schools has the "smarts"

most everyone is pretty well driven to be great otherwise they would not have made it to where they are

being overly driven to be great can sometimes lead to becoming obnoxious aka a gunner

I would bet the top 10 usnews schools have more then an average amount of gunners compared to schools not in the top 10.

If your the type of person that is happy around gunners then yes you might be happier at top 10 schools, otherwise in the long run you will most likely be happy anywhere especially if that anywhere is cheaper.

Apparently someone is taking happiness surveys at allopathic medical schools--Vanderbilt likes to boast that it's at the top of that survey. Considering that Vanderbilt is a "top" medical school, I think that at least shows that being at a "top" school does not mean that the intensity of the environment will destroy your soul.

Not sure if you're a med student or not but you'll question that when you start talking to some of your classmates.

If you are looking for a general causal relationship, you won't find one. Apply to schools you think will help you get to where you want to go and have an overall environment, cost, and location that suits you and your goals (where you think you will fit in well). Next, take a good look at the schools that interview you, asking poignant questions of upperclassman and doing some digging of your own. Of the ones that accept you, pick the one that fits you best.

I think you're underestimating things. There are going to be cool people and prickish gunners everywhere you go. Even at DO schools. I doubt the ratios change that much.

I attend an osteopathic medical school and I can attest that my class has no shortage of gunners and pricks. I think it's more of a general medical school phenomenon.

IMO

It doesn't matter whether you go MD or DO.

But here are a few things i used to pick my school--UConn SOM

If you can, pick a school thats true p/f. At uconn there are no internal rankings whatsoever the first 2 years and everyone helps each other out. Its a great environment and its fun.

The best curriculum imo is organ/system based. I can not imagine how students at other schools learn medicine in a discipline based style. A system based approach allows for easier integration of the various discipline based on body section (ie. head and neck).

If your debating between 2 schools and one is considerably cheaper, and i mean 10-15 K a year. Be smart. Save money.
