Anyone have advice on this? I want to apply to some Front Desk positions at a private practice while I study to get into school. I have an MPH and a BA. Tons of research experience. However, my current job does not give me enough time to study and I come home tired.

I would like to get some job that is mentally less taxing so I can focus on getting into school. My last couple of positions have been research oriented and I am struggling with how to explain it in lay terms. I have had a couple of interviews where its gone over peoples heads my work experience.

Was your work on the research analytic or administrative? If you can, try and focus on generalized administrative tasks (organization, communication, etc) and really avoid getting into anything more than basic statements of the research questions.

If you're getting interviews at all, though, the problem is less likely to be your resume than than the interview. I work in research and even hiring for *our* admin positions we debate the overqualification issue all the time. You're also in a bind if you're applying within the next 1-2 years because a lot of people are going to want someone longer-term than that for their front desk, and in this economy they can probably find them.

I am applying soon.

I don't think anyone can help you "dumb down" what you say about your research because nobody knows what it is. I know this will sound harsh, but if you're not able to communicate your research at a level for a non-scientist to comprehend the basics, the failure is entirely on your part.

I did a similar thing a few years back. I omitted the fact that I have a Master's degree. Also I didn't mention my research experience. So, yeah, basically, I lied. And I ended up getting a front desk position at a cardiovascular surgeon's office.
