For example, your great great great grandpa was from U.K. and he was a "sir" or "lord." He graduated from a U.K. medical school and helped to start the U.S. medical education. And, for example, he taught surgery in several early medical schools.

Can you mention you have tie with that specific school?

Please move this thread if it's inappropriate. I am just being curious and would like to bring up this discussion.

Where is the "Not sure if serious..." jpeg when you need it?

This is the Mayo thing, right? You should focus on the qualities that YOU possess that will make you a good physician. Even if you are a direct descendent of Joseph Lister, it has no impact on your ability to practice medicine.

...or, start the interview with "Do you know who I am, damnit ?!"

Sure if you really want to, but having a "relative" who is affiliated with a school alone will not carry any weight, especially if that relative has been dead for 200 years. The school affiliation thing only works when you can convincingly spew some BS about how it has given you a unique or insider perspective about the school and you greatly admire this or that about it and blah blah blah, etc.

Plus if you think about it, this guy probably has tens of thousands of descendents. Just about any of us could find a cool "connection" if we go back 5 generations in all directions on our family tree.

Now it would be cool if you were into genealogy and had this guy's journal or something and could quote something inspiring he wrote about the school's mission or medicine in general and how that in turn inspired you, etc. Not only would that be impressive, but now you've shown that you have some worthwhile hobbies outside of medicine. A lot of older folks are really into searching their family roots and stuff, so I bet an adcom person would be really impressed that you even know who your great-great-great-great grandpa was and have studied his life.

I would pay good money to see someone ask that, especially if they follow it up with, "I'm the Juggernaught, bitch!"

Well, this might sound stupid. But, what if you prove you are the royal family descent of England? Do you get to called "Sir" or "Lord" too? 😕

Why wouldn't you put that in your personal statement. If it goes well, then great. If no one cares, whatever. You can't lose. Unless, you word it as "I'm such n suches decedent. Therefor, you should admit me." 👎
