Hi, Just curious - does anyone here know where I can find the official duty hour requirements for an ED residency. I hear it's 60 hours per week, but not sure whether this is meant to be a running average or strictly as a per week limit. Any clarification would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

It's 80...just like most others.

No, it's not.

I'm not sure on the verbage -- it's like 65 including conference, and there's some stipulation about scheduled vs actual worked when you include sign out, but it is most definately not 80.

I think people may be confusing required hours with the 80 hours/week maximum set by law.

so...let's say I am scheduled for 67 hours in a week. Is this still a violation if during another week in the same month I have only 50 scheduled hours?

If you are complaining about a 67h work-week (followed by a 50, no less) I will find you and punch you in the nuts.

No, it is averaged over 4 weeks.
Internal Medicine is different in that it truly is a week by week basis, not averaged over four.

Remember, there are gross violations, and there is creating a perception of yourself that will follow you for the rest of your life. When you are in residency, it is crucial to remember that EVERY job you apply for will, for the first five years or so, want to speak to your PD. Your colleagues will be asked, formally and informally, about you.

So, do you really want to complain about a 2 hour violation?

Its something to think about.

at the same time there is the question of how far you are willing to go to protect your program. I heard about a neurosurg resident who was working over 100 hr/wk and had to lie on her time sheets so she wouldn't lose her job. That's way over the line.

A resident should not work more than 60 scheduled
hours per week seeing patients in the emergency
department and no more than 72 duty hours per
week. Duty hours comprise all clinical duty time and
conferences, whether spent within or outside the
educational program, including all on-call hours.

Why would the hours for EM be less than the hours for other residencies?

Because it's a tacit admission that there is dead time/down time on inpatient services in residency. Because ABEM sets minimum patient volume requirements for training sites, when you math it out, there is no down time in the ED.
