Honestly so glad you started this one. I've been so anxious knowing these dual degree programs are extra competitive and more now as the applicant pool has grown!!

Also, has anyone heard back from UPenn, Cornell, or Illinois, or do you have any idea of when we should hear from them? I tried to find out more about their timelines on their websites when I applied, but I didn't really see anything (outside of Illinois saying late November/early December as their estimated time to send out invitations for video interview). I know that UCDavis, CSU, and NC State have sent out invites already.

Congrats as well! I heard back from Penn around mid-December last year. Cornell’s dual degree is contingent on a DVM acceptance so I assume it would be early January

Were interview invites for Penn sent out around this week/next week last year?

For Penn, I got a notification on 12/28 (and then another on 2/23). I vaguely remember reading last year that they don't do interviews, but that may have changed.

It was for the VMD-PhD program. The VMD program sends invites starting January and they continue sending invites until February

Is it possible to be invited for an interview for the VMD-PhD program but not for the VMD program (admission into graduate school for just the PhD rather than the dual degree)?

I have no idea. But NCSU and CSU are definitely two schools where admissions to the dual degree is separate from the DVM process because you start with the PhD for year one. The dual degrees don’t transfer applicants into a PhD pool automatically if you don’t get a DVM-PhD or DVM acceptance as far as I’m aware

I believe that for UPenn specifically, you have to apply separately if you're interested in being accepted to a PhD-only program. I think that the deadline to apply for their Biomedical Graduate Studies group has already passed for this cycle, though.

I've spoken to the Dean of that dual degree program and he told me that if you don't get accepted to VMD program, you don't get invited to the dual degree option. If you're looking to be considered separately, you must apply separately. I don't remember when is the deadline for the PhD degree tho

I'm confused as to why doesn't UW Madison require additional LOR for the dual degree as do other schools. I mean, good for us but yet idk if that affects in some way

It’s because the DVM LOR’s (vets, professors, research mentors) are meant to speak about your qualifications for vet school and the dual degree LOR (research mentors) is for research. Most schools require DVM admissions before considering you so that’s probably why they’d like both…to see how well rounded you are!

Edit: I misread your question lol. Idk why some schools don’t want separate LORs but they’ll likely want new LORs for their grad program if you’re accepted

the dual degree interviews aren’t like a regular MMI interview. I’m doing a presentation at my lab’s weekly meetings and invited a few mentors and current dual degree students to ask mock questions after. Also, I heard some programs will take you on a tour or out to dinner so the interview process kind of includes making conversation

I think it’s really dependent on the school. What programs are you interviewing with?

I can only speak to the program I graduated from, but the interview process for my dual program was the usual DVM admissions interview, as well as a 1 hr interview with the then Dean of Graduate Studies and 2 other graduate faculty members, and 4 or 5 shorter interviews with faculty members whose research aligned with my interests. It was a long day with a lot of face time

I think when you're preparing for dual degree interviews, the most important thing is that you have a clear vision of why you want to commit to that program and why it is necessary for your career goals to do both degrees at the same time. That was a repeating theme in my dual applications. A dual program is that university making a major investment in you, and they want to ensure that you are going to be worth that investment and not someone who might bail out halfway through, or someone who doesn't fully understand what they're getting into, etc.

since you have to be accepted first to the DVM portion, it would be much later.

well I just got rejected from LSU (I didn't apply dual degree but they do offer it after the 1st year of vet school) so 🙂. I need Wisconsin, Cornell or Penn to accept me...

They told me that they're still deciding how many people to invite when I asked about the schedule two weeks ago so it’s possible they're not done sending invites. It also depends on their budget bc one of their blogs said they get thirty five applicants each year. Paying for that many two day travel expenses is unrealistic

That’s reassuring, thank you. I am so glad that they have sent out at least a few invites (to y’all no less!). I just want some sort of answer—rejection or acceptance.
Where did you hear that they are still deciding on how many people? Was that through email?

No, but I feel like we’ll hear from them within the next two weeks based on past timelines. Davis should’ve already sent out interviews if you’re still being considered for their DVM program

Also it is def weird that Penn hasn’t sent DVM invites to anyone. They have always sent first wave by Dec 15 according to past threads so maybe the admissions office has changed?
